Britain’s wedding capital Every St Valentine’s Day, thousands of people travel to a small village on Scotland’s border with England. Many of them go to get married, and many more couples go through mock wedding ceremonies to ‘renew their marriage vows’. The village is Gretna Green and it’s sometimes called Britain’s wedding capital.
Слайд 4
Gretna’s romantic reputation began 250 years ago. In 1754, English Parliament passed a law banning young people under the age of twenty-one to get married without their parents’ permission. In Scotland, however, this law did not apply. Traditionally, a man and a woman over the age of sixteen could get married by declaring themselves husband and wife in front of two witnesses. So what was a young couple to do if they were in love and under 21? Why, flee to Scotland of course. And Gretna Green was the first village on the Scottish side of the border. Why Gretna Green?

Avril Lavigne Born in 1984 in a small Canadian town, Avril Lavigne never doubted she would be a star. “We knew she was talented, but we didn’t realize how talented”, says her mother Judy. Avril was the middle child of three- she has a brother, Matthew, who’s almost two years older, and a sister , Michelle, who’s three years younger. At 16, Avril moved to Manhattan and started working on her debut CD- Let Go. ‘I always knew this was what I had to do,’ she says. ‘I love writing. When I get upset and really need to get it out of me, I go to my guitar. Sometimes I feel like my guitar is my therapist.’ She says it took her two hours to write Complicated. ‘ Songwriting is like that for me,’ she says. ‘Someone can say, ‘Go and write a song,’ and I can do it. I can write a song a day.’
Слайд 9
Avril’s songs tell stories. ‘When I wrote Complicated,’ she says, ‘I was feeling what the song talks about- that there are tons of people in the world who are fake, who are two-faced.’ Losing Grip- her favourite song on Let Go- is about one of her ex-boyfriends who didn’t value her enough. ‘He didn’t give me what I needed emotionally,’ says Avril. Sk8er boi was inspired by what she ‘went through in high school’ (which she hated). Her requirements for boyfriend are simple. ‘I need a guy who’s sensitive,’ she says. ‘I need a guy who can give me lots of attention and who will hug me all the time.’ Avril Lavigne doesn’t care what other people say about her. ‘I write what I feel, and I never worry what others think,’ she says. ‘I’m gonna dress what’s me, I’m gonna act what’s me and I’m gonna sing what’s me.” Her dream is to rock the whole world. ‘I want people to know that my music is real and honest and it came from my heart. I was just being true to myself.’

Ghost stories: The story of Haunted Castle Britain is blessed with haunted castles. In fact, most castles in Britain claim that they have a ghost or two. However, the beautiful Glamis Castle has a deserved reputation as the most haunted castle in Scotland. “I must own,” wrote Sir Walter Scott when he stayed a night at Glamis, “that when I heard the door after door shut, I began to consider myself as too far from the living, and somewhat too near to the dead…”
Слайд 11
Ghost Story. The Grey Lady. Over 400 hundred years ago the 6 th Lord of Glamis married Janet Douglas, a woman of impeccable character and unusual beauty. The family lived happily at Glamis until Lord Glamis died in 1528. Lord Glamis’ death changed Lady Janet’s life forever. King James V, the ruler of Scotland of that time, hated Lady Janet’s father and decided to take revenge on poor Lady Janet. He accused her of witchcraft, and her servants- under torture- gave false evidence against her. After a long imprisonment in a dark dungeon Lady Janet was almost blind. Still, King James wasn’t satisfied and Lady Janet was burnt alive at Edinburgh Castle. Her ghost, known as ‘the Grey Lady’, has been haunting the Castle ever since. Many castle visitors have also heard a knocking sound: the hammering of the workmen building the scaffold on which Lady Janet was burnt alive. The Grey Lady’s favourite place is the Chapel at Glamis. She has been seen by many residents and visitors, including Lady Glanville (the sister of the late Queen Mother). The Grey Lady is supposed to bring good luck if you see her.

My First Date l. Thomas On the day, shaking and shining, I went up to London on the train and then by bus to the Albert Hall. There she was. Waiting me! As though I took women out every night, I kissed her on the cheek. Then things started to become difficult. She grumbled about sitting up in the highest seats, and complained all the way up the endless stairs. When she had gone with Cedric, she moaned, they had sat in the front stalls, just behind the conductor. ‘ You don’t hear the music properly down there’, I argued with inspiration. We sat down. It was like peering into the mouth of a volcano. ‘Up here the music floats to you’. She kept muttering through the first half of the concert, and then horrified me in the interval by announcing that she really would like a drink. Dumbstruck, I mentally counted the money in my pocket. ‘ Please dear’, she said, ‘a gin and tonic’. A gin and tonic! How much was a gin and tonic? Trembling, I went towards the bar.
Слайд 14
‘ And could we have a programme?’ she called after me. ‘We ought to have bought the programme beforehand surely!’ Never mind the programme, I thought, but there was no escaping the gin and tonic. I approached the bar. I had never bought a drink in my life. ‘ Gin and tonic, please’, I mumbled. The lady had a suspicious eye, and I had a sudden hope that she would refuse to serve me. It would, on the other hand, be a humiliation to admit that I had been turned away as underage. But that gin and tonic would mean that I would not have enough to buy teeth while the lady behind the bar hesitated. She made up her mind and said: ‘ All right then. How many? Two?’ ‘ One!’ I bellowed. She fell back, shocked. ‘One please, just one’, I whispered. ‘ Aren’t you having one?’ inquired the girl when I returned. ‘ Me? Oh no. I’m in training, you see- for football. I’ve had to cut out drink, especially gin and tonic.’ ‘ Did you get a programme?’ she sniffed. ‘I’d like to know what they are playing even if we are a long way up.’ ‘ Sold out’, I said desperately. ‘All gone. Anyway I think it’s more fun guessing, don’t you?’ ‘ Not really’, she said. ‘I feel guite dizzy up here, you know…’ I was glad when it was over.

Some people are better looking than others-that’s life, but does it matter? Answer either True or False to these questions: Men prefer women to be thin. Women don’t fall in love with weak men. I would still love my partner if he or she was to become fat. Beauty is only skin deep. Unattractive people can be more successful than attractive people. Thin people have every thing . Unattractive people are just as interesting and intelligent as attractive people. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Fat people should be ashamed of their bodies . At a party I don’t talk to unattractive people. Peo ple you first think are plain can be interesting when you get to know them. You know if you fancy someone within the first five seconds of m eeti ng them. test: How important is beauty to you?
Слайд 16
Your score: For questions 1/2/6/9/10/12 give yourself one point if you answered False and two for True. For questions 3/4/5/7/8/11 score one for True and two for False. If you score 16 or over, you put a high value on looks, which could make your life a misery. But read on, there is a solution… Escaping the beauty trap We all suffer agonies of self-hatred from time to time. But the trouble with hating your body is that it’s part of you and you can’t hate it without hating yourself. The first step out of the beauty trap it to try to a ppreciate your good poi nts more, and find ima ginative ways to live wit h the bits you aren’t keen on.

Eminem
Слайд 18
His rise to fame has been meteoritic. His first album came out in 1997 and was poorly received. But Eminem was determined to succeed and his second album, The Slim Shady, climbed to number 2 on the US album charts in 1999. A year later, The Marshal Mathews LP became the fastest selling album in rap history. Today, Em is rich and famous but he still raps about the days of his unhappy childhood. He says he’ll never forgive his father who left them, penniless, when he was only 6 months old. He had spent 12 years moving with his mother from place to place before they finally settled in Detroit. “We never had any money”, Em remembers. ”I know my mother tried to do her best, but it seemed like we moved every two or three months.” Marshal was a small and skinny boy and he was bullied in practically every school he went to. When he was 9, he almost died after a vicious attack at school and spent 5 days in a coma. He wrote letters to his dad, hoping that he would come to his rescue and deal with the bullies. But all the letters came back unopened… At the age of 15 he dropped out and soon married his school sweetheart. In 1995, his daughter Hailie was born. These were hard times for the young couple.” Had lost my job, couldn’t afford diapers for my daughter, couldn’t do anything…,” Em sings in one of his songs. He still can’t get used to his incredible wealth and fame .
Слайд 19
“ Sometimes it starts to get on my nerves. I try to be nice to people, but I get my privacy invaded a lot more than I used to. I’m not a patient person when it comes to teenagers giggling and laughing or making comments as I walk by. I’ve always had a problem with people staring at me and now they have a reason to stare and I can’t get mad at them,” he complains. It’s difficult not to have your privacy invaded when you are the most notorious bad boy of the rap world. Em willingly gives interviews and his life is open to the public. “Sometimes I regret people so much, and sometimes I don’t,” he says. “You want to be honest with people and you want your fans to feel what you’re going through, because they may be going through the same thing. But then again, sometimes I wish I didn’t, so people wouldn’t be in my business so much.” Em is just as open in his lyrics. Not only does he use strong language freely and frequently, but his verses are alarmingly personal. Eminem admits that in many of his songs he speaks his mind and touches on “personal issues, family things”. This frankness often lands him in trouble. Eminem seems to be a sitting target for lawyers eager to make a name for themselves. His mother filed a lawsuit, because, as she says, certain lines on The Slim Shady had caused damage to her reputation. His former classmate (and bully!!!) DeAngelo Baily accused Eminem of labeling him in the song Brain Damage. Em says: “If you want to sue me, just take a number because there are a lot of people in the line. At this rate by the time I’m done with my rap career, I will probably have no money left from lawsuits.” And he is only half-joking.
Слайд 20
However, Em probably will make a career in the movies as well. He is playing in a film “8 Mile High”. The film’s story is very similar to Eminem’s own life, although it is not completely autobiographical. Em costars with Kim Basinger who plays his mother, and rumour has it that Em is absolutely smitten with Kim and they are often seen together. The film is due out in 2002.. Em describes himself as “basically a nice person”. He considers himself a perfectionist. He is quite proud of his achievements, and he is determined to achieve more. He says: “I’m not quite where I wanna be, but I’m nearly there. ”And his advice to his teenage fans is ”Grown up like me. Be tough.”

Bad habits among teens today.
Слайд 22
Shocking facts Over 90% of all smokers start before they are 18. The average age for a new smoker is 13. Among the 13-year-old smokers there are more girls than boys. Smoking kills about 3 million people every year. Some aren’t even smokers. They are people who live or work with heavy smokers.
Слайд 23
If you think it is cool, think again Do you want to look this way? Your clothes and hair will have a terrible smell. Your teeth will turn yellow. You will have bad breath. Your hair and skin will become dry. You’ll get premature wrinkles. You spend much money on smoking. Cigarettes cost money. Nicotine isn’t the only bad thing in cigarettes, there are over 400 chemicals in one cigarette that are known to be harmful. Smoking causes bronchitis, asthma and emphysema. A smoker is 22 times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non-smoker.

The drug addict Sheila Barnes was 18, and all the other girls in the street where she lived envied her. The reason was not hard to find. Sheila worked as a secretary in a recording studio; pop stars were always in and out of the office where she worked. One day one of them, Ronny, took her to a party after the concert. At the party Sheila tried ‘pot’ for the first time. It seemed to be the thing to do. Some time later Sheila was very unhappy. Ronny’s group had gone to Australia on tour and Ronny didn’t want to see her again. Then Sheila met Burt. Her friend Molly tried to advise her: You’re stupid to go out with Burt. I know you’re unhappy, but… I know and I don’t care! He’s supposed to be on hard drugs. They say he takes any drug at all! But Sheila did care. In fact she was very frightened when Burt took her to an all-night party. For the first time she refused to go. Burt didn’t understand and tried to push her, but she resisted, and ran home…

An Interview with teenagers. We had an interview with young people of different ages. We asked them 2 questions about drugs and alcohol and they express their opinion on these problems. Question № 1: Why do teens take drugs, smoke and drink alcohol? Question №2 : What problems do teens have with communicating with their parents and friends?
Слайд 26
Vera, 15 1.Young people are just so bad now and that’s all. 2.Teens take drugs and smoke because they want to show how cool they are. Vladimir, 19 1.Teens and their parents don’t understand each other. I think, children should listen to parents’ advice. 2.They have a lot of free time. And young people spend it on these bad things. It will be better for them to go in for sport.
Слайд 27
1.As for me, poor parents! 2.I don’t really know, I don’t understand them myself. So it’s very difficult for me to answer. They can do so much to all mankind, but they just can’t help themselves. So, I think it’s stupid! Caroline, 26Michael, 20 1.As people grow up they want to be able to decide what is better for them and reject what they are told by their parents as they don’t want to feel controlled. 2.The real reason why teens do this is to rebel and feel as if they have some control over their life. I am a teacher so I have lived through this and see it at school.
