A Talented master of the Dymkovo Toy from Urzhum

My name is Vlad. I live in the town of Urzhum. My native land is rich in talented people. I’d like to tell you about one of these people – Zoya Vasilievna Penkina, a famous master of the Dymkovo toy.

Zoya Vasilievna Penkina was born on the 25th of February in 1897 in the village of Tikhony, Urzhumsky District.

In 1918, she married to a railroad worker Vasiliy Ivanovich Penkin and moved to Dymkovo, the birthplace of the well-known Vyatka clay toy. Her husband’s mother and sister were masters of the Dymkovo toy. They taught Zoya a craft.

Some years went by…  Zoya Vasilievna became an excellent master. She took part in different art exhibitions. The master had personal exhibitions in Kirov, Moscow and Saint Petersburgh, too. You can see her works in the Museum of the Dymkovo Toy in Kirov, the State Historical Museum in Moscow, the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva and other museums of the world.

The most famous works of Zoya Penkina are “The Urzhum Fair”, “The Mother of Many Children” and compositions based on Pushkin’s fairytales. The writer Nadezhda Perminova said about the works of Z. V. Penkina, “Her toy is naive in its simplicity, it fascinates, conquers”.

Zoya Vasilievna had many rewards. She became the member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and the Laureate of the State Award of the RSFSR named after Ilia Repin.

Zoya Vasilievna Penkina died in 1987. She devoted her long life to the Dymkovo toy. The master turned it to an artwork. Thanks to Zoya Vasilievna Penkina and other masters, the Dymkovo toy is famous all over the world.
