1.Introduction
My name is Polina Markova. I have loved drawing since early childhood. When I pick up pencils and brushes, I forget about everything and find myself in the amazing world of magic colors. Drawing helps me in my learning. It develops imaginative thinking, associative thinking, imagination, helps to see and hear the world around us.
I am a student of Saratov Children's Art School. I love to draw and I am happy to study at this school. This year I am taking final exams and graduating from school. I take part in various competitions and Olympiads. Repeatedly my works were awarded with diplomas.
My favorite subject at school is History of Art. We study architectural monuments, biographies of famous artists, painters, sculptors, myths and everything that related to the History of art. We learn the rules of describing artistic paintings and need a good and rich vocabulary to describe paintings. I really love describing paintings and it's interesting and exciting for me. We оften describe famous paintings. And I really want to talk about my hobby in more detail.
Object of research: a still life painting - a type of fine art.
The Aim of my work is a project: complete a painting using different artistic materials and techniques.

- present my painting made in the style of the great artist;
- share with classmates your discoveries and organize an exhibition of their works;
- prove that the hobby of graphics has a positive effect on a person and bring a lot of bright colors to his life.
Research Methods
What is painting?
It is when an artist creates a work of art that not only reflects his soul, but also expresses his individuality. And this work does not just hang on the wall, it lives its own life, it breathes, it talks to us, it is alive, it is a part of us. It becomes a part of our soul. All this is possible thanks to a person’s talent. A person should be such that his art becomes a living, breathing story of life for us. I think that this is the meaning of art.
2. Main Part
2.1 Student Survey.
At the beginning of my work, I conducted a survey among my classmates about their preferences in the visual arts. They were asked three questions:
1.Do they like to draw?
2.How often do they draw?
3.Which type of fine art do you prefer: painting, graphics, arts and crafts or sculpture? The results were recorded in the charts.
How often do you draw?
Which type of fine art do you prefer: painting, graphics, arts and crafts or sculpture.
81% of my class like to draw, they often spend their free time doing this.
18% of students draw every day, 19% - twice a week, 31% - several times a month, 32% - do not draw at all. They are well aware of painting (68%) and arts and crafts (20%).
2.2 History of painting.
Since prehistoric times people tried to paint the walls of caves, used paints to depict the world around and express their feelings in colours. The picture can also become a historical document and tell about the clothes and customs of people from a certain epoch.
Already 18000 years ago, people painted on the walls of caves. Burned bones and chips used as brushes and multicolored clay, ocher, coal mixed with water or fat used as paints.
Artists painted on stone, wood, paper, metal or walls. They can work in a realistic or abstract manner, as well as choose different genres - from portrait to landscape.
2.3. The painting includes such genres :
Paintings are painted in watercolor, oil or drawn with pencil, pen, ink, chalk or charcoal, pastel; they can be painted from nature, in the open air or in the studio.
2.4. My favourite Art of painting is the still life painting.
A still life is a painting that is without people. In French a still life is called a ‘nature morte’ or a ‘dead nature’, which is a strange name, that is used to describe Nature, which means ‘living’. This term dates from the middle of 18th century in France. The English name ‘still life’ is derived from the Dutch ‘stilleven’, or ‘motionless life’.
2.5. Ivan Fomich Khrutsky. Biography.
My favourite painter is Ivan Fomich Khrutsky. I really like his paintings and pictures. I can look at his paintings for a long time and they bring me special pleasure.
Khrutsky painted living pictures, in which he worked out every little detail. The most impressive thing is that the artist himself created his pictures thanks to his imagination.
Ivan Fomich Khrutsky is a world-famous painter, master of still life (the founder of the Russian still life genre) and portrait painter, Academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Painting.
Ivan Fomich Khrutsky was born in January 1810 in the Ulla province.
Ivan Khrutsky studied at the Polotsk Higher Piarist School and received a Secondary Art Education. In 1827 Ivan Fomich came to St. Petersburg and took painting lessons from the English artist George Dawe for two years. In 1830 he attended the Imperial Academy of Arts .
Since 1830 the artist has been presenting his still lifes, which at that time were called "paintings of flowers and fruits". The subjects of the paintings became more complex, and not only fruits, flowers and berries appeared in the composition.
In 1836 the artist received the Large Silver Medal and the Title of free artist for the presented landscapes for the painting "Flowers and Fruits" .
3. Рractical part.
3.1. Description of the painting by Khrutsky.
Now I want to describe one of his paintings.
The painting is called "Fruits and a bird". This is a still life painting. The painting was created by him in 1833.
The background of this painting is quite dark. In the foreground we see a large vase with fruit. This is not an ordinary vase, it is decorated with a beautiful pattern. It is filled with juicy, ripe fruit: melon, grapes, plums, apricots, peaches. You just want to eat them! Тhe main object is a bird. A green parrot sits on a grape branch, holding a branch with peaches in it’s beak. There are a lot of individual fruit next to these objects. But the most amazing thing is that all the fruits are not on the table, but on a bench. The still life is decorated with a butterfly. The work is painted in warm, light colors that are associated with summer. This painting is painted in oil in a calm color spectrum.
3.2. My project is to paint a still life in the style of I.F. Khrutsky.
Stages of my work:
1. First I collect and arrange objects for still life.
2. Then I select a sheet of paper for the painting of the right size.
3. After that I make a sketch with a pencil.
4. Next I check my mistakes.
5. Finally I start to paint my picture with gouache.
6. As a rule, I start with the background of my picture, and then paint individual objects.
7. I paint the background and all the objects together.
I finished my still life. I’m presenting my painting. My still life is called "Summer Mood".
This painting is a still life. There are bright objects in the foreground: pumpkins, corn, grapes and apples, a jug and vases with flowers. All these objects are on the table covered with fabrics. The background is bright and blue. This is an autumn still life, but thanks to bright colors it reminds of summer. The painting is done with gouache in warm colours.
3.3.At the lesson of fine arts, I talked about the painting and the technique of performing work in this direction. I gave an explanation of the concept of painting and gave examples of this work.
We then completed the landscape painting work using different kinds of painting.
Having completed the work, we arranged an exhibition of paintings of our class. My classmates liked this drawing technique. I am very pleased to see how some children in their free time perform drawings in this technique. They show each other their new works.
3.4. I often take part in competitions.
On November the 22nd the Petrovsky Hall of the Saratov Museum named after A.N. Radishchev hosted a grand opening ceremony of the exhibition based on the results of the interregional children's art competition "FAIR WIND. BOGOLYUBOVSKY RAID".
My work became a participant in the exhibition. The exhibition is open and will be on display until September the 30th 2025. Beautiful works of young artists from all over Russia can be seen in the historical building of the Museum .
4. Conclusion:
"My project work is creating a still life painting. This is creative and exciting work.
I have done the following work:
- Collected information about the history of painting, genres, types and styles of painting.
- Studied the work and biography of Ivan Fomich Khrutsky.
- Made a description of my favourite painting.
- Designed a project. Made a painting in the style of my favourite artist.
- Prepared a presentation and report.
The result is a real painting, made in the genre - still life. The work looks nice.
In addition, we can realize that each of us can learn the art of painting.
The main thing is to find your material, types and styles of painting and not be afraid to experiment.
An artist is very difficult and creative job. If you want to learn the art of painting, you will need canvas, paints, brushes, easel, palette, water and of course your desire and imagination. And the most important rule is to draw with soul and in a good mood!
Thank you for your attention!
