The bell was called in honour of Sir Benjamin Hall whos name is inscribed on it . A nother theory for the origin of this name is that the bell may have been named after a contemporary heavyweight boxer Benjamin Caunt . Bin Ben is one of the bell. Its height is more than two meters and its diameter is about three meters .
This clock is situated on the tower of Parliament. The Big Ben tourists are not allowed to get to the top of the ninety-six-meter tower. But after three hundred thirty-four steps , you can get into the place where a legendary bell is situated.
The clock has become a symbol of the United Kingdom and London. When a television or film-maker wishes to indicate a generic location in Britain, a popular way to do it is to show an image of the tower,
Big Ben is a symbol of a certain period in the country. It is a tribute to the monarch, who was able to create the British Empire. Everyone knows what Big Ben is.
The Tower has appeared in many films On 27 July 2012, starting at 8:12 a.m , Big Ben chimed thirty times, to welcome in the London Olympic Games ( it was the 30th Olympiad), which officially began that day.
This clock is well known all over the world and there are many « Small Bens » which are the copies of a famous clock. One can find it in different shops for tourists.
The famous clock Big Ben stands near the Houses of Parliament. . The Houses of Parliament stand beside the River Thames. You can go on a boat from Westminster and see London from the river . You can also see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament from Westminster Bridge.
On 2 June 2012, The Daily Telegraph reported that 331 Members of Parliament, including senior members of all three main parties, supported a proposal to change the name from Clock Tower to « Elizabeth Tower » in tribute to the Queen in her Diamond Jubilee year Big Ben was renamed on September, 12 2012 in the honour of the British Queen. Now it is called Elizabeth Tower .
