W illiam H ogarth was an English p ain ter. He was born in London on November 10 , 1697 , in the family of a poor school teacher . From early childhood he was fond of painting. In his youth he was apprenticed to the engraver Ellis Gamble. In 1720 he beg a n an independent way in the art of painting. In the end of the- 20ies Hogarth became famous for works of small size, representing group portraits.
