«Television and Advertisement»

Цели:

1. Развитие коммуникативных умений обучающихся в рамках изучаемой темы.

2. Совершенствование навыков поискового чтения.

3. Развитие аудитивных умений; развитие внимания и восприятия, слуховой памяти, мышления и воображения, способностей к аналитической деятельности.

4. Создание устойчивой положительной мотивации к изучению иностранного языка и культуры.

Вид занятия: практическое.

Оснащение: компьютер, текст, дидактический материал.

Квалификационные требования: ОК.1, 2, 4, 9

1. Организационный момент.

- Good morning. Take your seats, please. How are you today? Do you like the weather? Do you remember the date? What about the day? Is anybody absent? Well, let’s remember our last lesson. What did we do? (We started to talk about Mass Media.) Quite right.

2. Лексическая зарядка.

- And now let’s have a lexical drill. Take some cards with the definitions of different things connected with Mass Media and all the others try to guess what thing it is:

1.  A short informative film describing and praising some product.

2.  A serial about people’s relationships especially love and friendship.

3.  A TV program where people discuss a problem.

4.  The media with the help of which people communicate with each other or can find the necessary information.

5.  New information about sports presented in a short TV program.

6.  A program about weather.

7.  A program which gives us information about the modern trends of music and lets us listen to it.

Key: 1. an advert, 2. a soap opera, 3. a talk show, 4. the Internet, 5. sports news, 6. a weather forecast, 7. a music program

- Well, you have done the task. Can you tell the topic of our today’s lesson now? And don’t forget about the first definition. Yes, our topic is “Television and Advertisement”.

- And now I’d like you to answer some my questions:

1) How much time do you usually spend in front of the TV?

2) What channels and programs do you like to watch and why?

3) How often do you watch the news on television?

4) Which talk shows are your favourite and why?

5) What is the most irritating thing on the TV?

6) Do you think television is really necessary for us?

5. Основная часть.

- So, when we are speaking about Mass Media we usually mean 4 things. What are they? (Internet, television, radio, newspapers)

Absolutely right. Now you are to work in two groups and read the text about television and find advantages and disadvantages of TV. Write down key phrases on the card and exchange the cards with each other. Tell about all the pros and cons.

Advantages and disadvantages of TV

Watching TV, you know, is the perfect way to spend out free time. Do you agree? Or maybe you don’t. It’s well known fact that TV has positive and negative sides.

First of all it keeps people informed; we can learn a lot of information watching TV. We can choose programs that appeal to us more, because TV provides programs for all interests. Sometimes we can relax due to TV, entertain ourselves, especially when we are tired.

Advertisement on TV gives us information about different products and makes it easier to choose things to buy. When we watch TV we learn something new about the world, famous people and recent news.

But on the other hand, TV has a lot of disadvantages. It is a terrible waste of time. It makes us lazier. We stay at home instead of going out. We read less. We think less. We even talk less. Besides it’s very harmful for our health, especially for our eyes. Some violent programs and films on TV make people violent and cruel and it becomes a great problem in our days.

There is too much advertisement on TV. Sometimes it can encourage us to buy things we don’t need at all. It’s a waste of money and time. Many people become TV-addicted and it’s also a real problem of modern society.

So, we can’t say exactly whether it’s useful to watch TV or not. But the fact is that “so many people, so many minds”.

- So, what is the conclusion? Shall we watch TV or not?

- TV is necessary for us but everything should be with measure.

- Look at the screen, read and translate the phrases:

- Impossible is possible/ Невозможное возможно (Adidas)

- Just do it (Nike)

- I am what I am/ Я тот, кто я есть (Reebok)

- Because you're worth it/ Потому что вы этого достойны (L’Oreal)

- It's all about you/ Все о тебе (Nescafe)
- The Power of Dreams/ Сила мечты (Honda)

- Born to lead/Рожден, чтобы быть лидером (Yamaha)

- The Pursuit Of Perfection/ Стремление к совершенству (Lexus)

  • What can you tell about these phrases? What are they? (Slogans.) Quite right. They are advertising slogans. Which do you like best? Can you tell what main features of any advertisement are?

- So, now you can see some English words and word combinations. Match them with Russian equivalents:

give true information

do not talk about the products’ defects

help you to choose best products

(are) impossible to check

creative

annoying

convince people to buy things they do not need

famous people endorse products

не рассказывает о дефектах продукта

- And now look at the screen. (Advertisement video) Let’s compare two of them. What are the slogans? What is the difference? So, one advertisement is commercial and another one is social. Try to make a conclusion about each of them. Remember the slogans you have read and tell which of them are combined in the first advertisement (Honda – Impossible Is Possible/ The Power of Dreams). What is the main aim of a commercial advert? And what about a social advert? Is it necessary to have an advertisement on TV? What are positive and negative points of an advert? Try to use our vocabulary.

- Do you know which social adverts are considered to be the best? Which countries? (Korean, Japanese, Thailand)

- Have you ever seen commercial and social advertising combined? So, watch the video and try to guess the product. What is the slogan? (You can shine)

6. Проверка домашнего задания.

- What was your home task? (Create own advert of any product.) Are you ready with it? Was it difficult for you? Let’s check it. Who would like to start?

7. Подведение итогов проведенного урока.

- Well, I am pleased with your work today. Your marks are: … . Write down your home task: you are to refresh grammar rules about Present and Past Continuous Tenses. Make up and write down 10 sentences.

8. Рефлексия:

- Have you learnt anything new at the lesson? What do you like best? What would you like to know?
