«History and Traditions of Halloween»

Тема урока: «History and Traditions of Halloween»

Тип урока: Комбинированный (изучение и первичное закрепление новых знаний, развитие речевых навыков).

Продолжительность: 45 минут.

Цели урока:

1.  Образовательная: Познакомить студентов с историей, символами и традициями праздника Хэллоуин, расширить словарный запас по теме.

2. Развивающая: Развивать навыки чтения с пониманием основного содержания и извлечением конкретной информации, развивать навыки монологической и диалогической речи, а также языковую догадку.

Оборудование и материалы:

- Доска

- Компьютер/ноутбук, проектор

- Раздаточный материал (текст, задания для каждого студента)

План урока

2.  Введение в тему. Речевая разминка (6 мин.)

3.  Изучение нового материала. Работа с текстом (15 мин.)

1. Организационный момент (3 мин.)

- Teacher: Good morning, dear students! I’m glad to see you. Sit down, please. What date is it today?

What day of the week?

Who is absent?

- Teacher: Look at the board. (На слайде картинки, связанные с Хэллоуином: тыква-светильник, костюмы, надпись "Trick or Treat"). What do you think we are going to talk about today? What is the theme of our lesson?

- Students: Halloween!

- Teacher: Absolutely right! Today we will learn about the history of Halloween, its symbols and traditions.

- Teacher: Before we read the text, let's see what you already know about this holiday. Let's have a small quiz! Answer my questions, please.

    - T: When is Halloween celebrated? (On the 31st of October)

    - T: What is the main symbol of Halloween? (A pumpkin / Jack-o'-lantern)

    - T: What do children say when they go from house to house? (“Trick or treat”)

    - T: What colors are associated with Halloween? (Black and orange)

    - T: What kind of costumes do people wear? (Witches, ghosts, vampires, etc.)

Teacher: Now we are going to read a text about the history of Halloween. Read the text and be ready to answer the questions.

The History of Halloween

Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31st. Its roots go back over 2000 years to the ancient Celts, who lived in Ireland and Great Britain. They celebrated their New Year on November 1st. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter. They believed that on the night before the New Year (October 31st), the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. On this night, they celebrated Samhain, when the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

To celebrate Samhain, the Celts built huge bonfires. They wore costumes, typically made of animal heads and skins, and tried to tell each other's fortunes.

By the 8th century, the Christian church made November 1st a day to honor saints. The mass said on that day was called "All-hallows". The evening before it became known as "All-hallows Eve", and later "Halloween".

In the 19th century, millions of Irish people immigrated to the United States, bringing their Halloween traditions with them. The American tradition of "trick-or-treating" probably comes from the old custom of "guising" or "souling" in Ireland and Britain. Poor people would go from house to house asking for food or money in exchange for a prayer or a song.

The symbol of Halloween, the Jack-o'-lantern, comes from an Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack. People in Ireland and Scotland began making their own versions of Jack's lantern by carving scary faces into turnips or potatoes. In America, they found that pumpkins, which were native to the country, were much easier to carve. So the pumpkin became the most popular vegetable for making Jack-o'-lanterns.

Today, Halloween is a fun holiday for children and adults. Children dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating. People have Halloween parties with games, decorations, and scary stories.

    1.Write a short story (5-7 sentences) "How I would celebrate Halloween" (Как бы я отпраздновал Хэллоуин). Используйте новую лексику.

2.Learn by heart the new words Выучить новые слов
