Healthy lifestyle

Nowadays it has become important and modern to be fit. If you want to feel fit you should go in for one kind of sport or another. Sport helps people to stay in a good shape, to support health, it prevents from illnesses. Sport makes us more organized and better disciplined in our daily activities. All kinds of physical exercises are very useful to make our bodies strong and to keep ourselves fit and healthy. Doing sports a person begins to take care of his health.

I believe that everyone should do everything to be healthy. Good health is better than the best medicine. However some people don’t think about their health very much. The worst habits people have are smoking, drinking alcohol, taking drugs, eating a lot of high-fat food, physical inactivity, sleeping too much or too little, snacking or skipping breakfast.

For example, speaking about smoking, we have to say it has become the most urgent problem. Smoking kills about 3 million people every year. Smoking causes bronchitis, asthma. Your clothes and hair will have a terrible smell. Your teeth will turn yellow. You will have bad breath. A smoker is 22 times more likely to die of lung cancer than a non-smoker. In fact 30 % of all cancer death are caused by smoking. Smoking causes heart attacks.

So, all these bad habits destroy the health and could double the chance of dying. So if people want to feel and look great it’s very important for them to go in for sports, to have regular healthy food, to sleep seven or eight hours, get up early, give up smoking and alcohol.

The role of English in the world and in my life

Today English is the first international language. Millions of people speak English now. It is the language of science and technology, trade and cultural relations, commerce and business. It is everywhere, even in pop songs, adverts, on TV, on signs and in sports. It is also the major language of diplomacy. Hundreds and hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers are printed in English, most of the world’s mail and telephone calls are in English.

Two thousand years ago the people of Britain spoke their own language but then people arrived from other countries and the language slowly changed. The first people came from Holland and Germany about one thousand five hundred years ago and gave English words like “book” and “house”. People from the north of Europe arrived next with useful words like “leg”, ‘take’ and ‘sky’. The French arrived about one thousand years ago and their words changed the language again. Finally, about five hundred years ago, English became like the language we know today.

Now English is the most widespread language on Earth, second after Chinese. It is the official language of the UK, the USA, of Australia and New Zealand; it is used as one of the official languages in 50 countries including Canada, the South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India. These and other English-speaking countries form the Commonwealth. The British Commonwealth is a free association of independent countries which were all at some time part of the British Empire or linked with it. The Queen of Great Britain is the Head of Commonwealth and the queen of Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

As for me, I study English …. (варианты:) to broaden my mind, to travel around the world and to have a successful career in the future!

Environmental problems

Now I’m going to tell you about the environmental problems. The world we live in is very rich but fragile. There are oceans and rivers, mountains and lakes, forests and seas. They are the habitat for wild animals, birds and valuable plants. But today our environment is in danger. I’m going to tell you about the importance of forests.

People need forests for a lot of reasons. Trees give us shade in summer, fruit to eat, different colours to look at. They also give birds and insects a place to live. Forests give us oxygen - clean air. Rainforests in Africa and South America, for example, supply about 80 per cent of the oxygen for the world’s fresh air. Forests give us thousands of valuable wild plants from which scientists make medicines.  But every year an area of forests in Siberia disappear because of cutting down. People cut down the trees for valuable wood, for paper and for building. Another serious problem is forest fire. For example, last year 20000 (twenty thousand) square kilometers were burnt in Buryatia. We must think about our part in the environment. We shouldn’t use more water than we need. When we are in the forest we mustn’t let the fire burning. We should recycle the litter, plant trees and try to save the nature for future generations. Let’s think about it!

TV in our life

One thing is certain – we all love TV! Television is one of the greatest wonders. We can not imagine our life without it. TV became a part of people’s daily life. It informs, educates and entertains people. TV offers to its viewers a wide choice of programs. Watching TV we can travel from one country to another and learn much about different cultures. Television takes us to different cities where we can see a lot of places of interest. Sports fans can enjoy sports competitions in different sports, watch football matches and sports games. With the help of TV we can admire the beauty of nature and wildlife.

As for me I watch TV every day! I spend between 2 and 4 hours in front of the box each day. I sometimes do my homework in front of the TV set. I usually watch TV from 18 till 20 o’clock in the evening. My favourite TV channels are “the first”, NTV and …………. ………..The sorts of programmes I watch are the news, quiz shows, sport programmes,…………………. and films: documentaries, soap-operas, comedies, dramas, love-stories and actions………………………….. I watch soap-operas every day because they are interesting, but I hate chat shows so I never watch them. I watch the news almost every day because I like to know about the world. I occasionally watch documentaries, perhaps once a month, when they are about animals. I enjoy funny programmes so I watch comedies 3 or 4 times a week. Every weekend there is an interesting film on any channel so I can spend a day in front of the box.
