Mark Rothko 1903-1970 Mark Rothko was born in Dvinsk , Vitebsk Province, Russian Empire . His family was highly educated. They moved to the USA in 1913, following the path of many other Jews, because Mark`s father didn`t want his sons to be taken into the Czarist army. Mark studied at school and earned money for family. Mark spoke English, his fourth language, perfect. After graduation from Yale, he studied in the New Design School, where his talent had been discovered. He had his first exhibition, consisting of 15 paintings in New York.

Arshile Gorky 1904-1948 Arshile was born in 1904 in Armenia. He moved to New York in 1925. Arshile studied, then taught at the Central School of Art. Pablo Picasso was the source of inspiration for Arshile . His paintings were exhibited in Witney Museum(N.Y.), Museum of Contemporary Art, Pompidou Centre (France) etc.

Willem de Kooning 1904-1997 Willem is one of the leading artists and sculptors of the XX century, a leader of abstract expressionism. He was born in Rotterdam in 1904. In 1926 he illegally moved to the United States. During the next 70 years he lived and worked in New York. Willem was a friend of Arshile Gorky, who influenced on Willem`s painting. De Kooning became the first artist awarded the Imperial Prize.
