I. Introduction.

The aim of my work is to prove that baseball caps are not only a part of sport uniform today.

The tasks  are to get and study information about appearance of baseball caps, to find out and analyze the reasons of their popularity, to determine their function today.

Object: Baseball caps.

Subject: their functions today.

II. History of baseball caps.

Baseball cap is a hat worn by all baseball players. Designed to shade the eyes from the sun, this hat became popular with the general public.

From the 1840s to the 1870s, baseball players wore different types of hats, such as straw hats, boating caps, jockey caps, and even cycling caps. Caps have been a part of baseball uniforms since the beginning.The Brooklyn Excelsiors were the first team to wear what would later become the baseball cap, with its rounded top and peak, in the 1860s. By 1900, the "Brooklyn style" cap became popular.

By the early years of the twentieth century, it became common for players to wear hats with rounded tops. In recent years, baseball caps have changed very little.

Early baseball players wore caps to keep the sun out of their eyes. As baseball players became national heroes during the 20s and30s, team caps became popular with baseball funs across America.

III. Baseball caps today.

Baseball caps became the fashion accessory during the sport-crazy 90s. But you don’t have to be a sports fan to wear a baseball cap. All kinds of people wear them – from truck drivers to film stars.  

 III.1. Sport uniform.

Athletes in different sports, for example in golf, cricket, cycling, tennis wear caps with their team's logo and colors. Caps may simply have a company's logo, such as Reebok, Nike or Lacost. Trainers of basketball, hockey, football, volleyball usually wear baseball caps. During the sports competitions you can see thousand sports fans, sport service workers and trainers in baseball caps on the stadiums.    

III.2. Part of the uniform for other professions.

Baseball caps today use as the part of uniform for different professions. See the list of professions that use baseball caps as part of the uniform.

1. Naval officers from the US, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.

2. Some armed forces especially the United States Navy and United States Coast Guard. The baseball cap usually has a command logo on the front to denote command affiliation.

3. Also in the United States Army, parachute riggers wear red baseball caps and parachute instructors wear black baseball caps.

4. Police forces, private security services.

5. Chester Zoo’s(in England) zookeepers' uniform includes a green baseball cap with the zoo's logo on its front.

6. The farmers to protect themselves from the sun rays.

7. Restaurants, shops, supermarket crews.

8. Airport and railway workers.

9. Truck and taxi drivers.

10. Part of the uniform in some schools and colleges.

11. Photographers, paparazzis.

III.3. Popular accessory for everyone.

Today you can see baseball caps not only at the games but at restaurants, parties, on the beach, in the streets and in airports. But why they are so popular? I determined some reasons of their popularity.

1. Age.

There is no age limit to the wearing of a baseball cap.  People of different ages wear baseball caps. You can see babies, kids, schoolchildren, teenagers, young people, adults and old people in baseball caps.

2. Sex.

Baseball caps are not only for men, they are worn by girls and boys, men and women.

3. Nationality.

It doesn’t matter what nationality you are. Thousands  people in Europe and Asia, South and North America, Africa and Australia wear baseball caps.

4. Way of the wearing.

Usually we wear baseball caps forwards. Rappers wear them sideways. School boys wear them backwards. You can wear baseball caps in the way you like.

5. Social levels.

      People of different social levels wear baseball caps: workers and businessmen,

      clerks and film stars. But the baseball caps can   be   different from each other.

      Some of them are cheap and some have fashion design and even decorated with

      precious stones.

6. Different functions.

       People  wear baseball caps because they go with different clothes, they are  

       fashion accessories, the protect from the sun and even the rain, they hide

       baldness and bad haircuts, some people wear them when they don’t want to be

       recognized.  

 III.4. More than clothes.

Today baseball caps use not only as clothes but also as:

1. Commercials.

        Baseball caps find a place among promotional products these days. Many         companies use them as a platform to show their logos and promote their         goods. Baseballs caps, as promotional items can stay in use for months or an         even longer time. The caps can be decorated in numerous ways, including         embroidery, embossing,         screen-printing.

2. Baseball caps gadgets.

A baseball cap that reads your mind.

It looks like an ordinary baseball cap. But when you put it on, the cap detects         and         analyzes the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from your brain. It         can even tell you if  you’re getting too sleepy when you drive a car. Similar         technology could also allow you to control home electronics such as TVs, computers, and air conditioners, all by just thinking about them.

3. Other.

        Designers use the idea of baseball cap making different things: pencil pots,         writing materials, bags, accessories, lamps and even cookies.

IV. Conclusion.

Read and analyzed in formation about history of baseball caps, determined the reasons of their popularity I can conclude that baseball caps are not only a part of sport uniform today, but they are popular and modern accessory.
