The museum was opened in 1971 in the house, where Maxim Gorky had been living from 1902 to 1904. A wooden staircase for visitors ascend to the second floor of the house where you can see the old bronze plaque with the inscription "A. M. Peshkov " on the door. The excursion begins with a hallway. There is an old phone hanging on the wall. There are also a great oak hanger and a chest covered with home-spun track. On the other side there is a Swedish bookcase and a picture, called "Old Russia", presented by Gorky’s artist Vladimir Orlov .

AM Gorky’s apartment is situated in one of the most beautiful mansions built by the famous architect Shechtel . Here the writer spent the last years of his life, working on a epic-novel " Klim Samgin’s Life " . The museum preserves the unique, Gorky’s rich library. The museum's exhibit conveys the atmosphere of a young family life filled with happiness and understanding.
