Australia was discovered by the British explorer James Cook in 1770. Australia is the biggest island and the smallest continent in the world. Australia is located south of Asia, between the two oceans – Pacific and Indian. Australia is the least populated of the world’s continent, its population being only 18.3 million people. Now Australia is a multicultural society: nearly five million people and settlers from almost 200 nations. One in every five Australians was born overseas.

The capital of Australia is Canberra, which became the capital only in 1927. The main cities are: Adelaide, Alice Springs, Brisbane, Darwin, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Hobart. The first Europeans visited the shores of Australia in 1606. Australia is a federation of six states in which legislative powers are divided between the Australian Federal Parliament and the six state parliaments. Australia’s official language is English. Australians understand a person from another country who speaks English.

The climate in Australia is rather mild, so it’s never very cold, but it is winter in Australia between June and August. Sydney is a very Australian city with its amazing beaches and bright sun. Sydney is world famous for its architecture – this is the Sydney Opera House.
