J o hn Constable (11 June 1776 – 31 March 1837) was an English Romantic paint e r . Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home—now known as "Constable Country"—which he invested with an intensity of affection. His most famous paintings include Dedham Vale of 1802 and The Hay Wain of 1821. Although his paintings are now among the most popular and valuable in British art, he was never financially successful and did not become a member of the establishment until he was elected to the Royal Academy at the age of 52. Description The Hay Wain depicts , as its central feature a pair of horses pulling a hay wain or large farm cart across a river. The space of the picture is asymmetrically divided. The center is dominated by the river and horses. There is a forest in the far distance. The picture is painted in cold colours. The dominating colours are all shades of green and brown. The soft and delicate colours of the picture blend together. The artist introduces fine details as horses, people in the cart, the dog on the bank of the river. It is a romantic picture. The artist demonstrates a real talent as a colourist. He managed to capture the atmosphere of the place. The site where The Hay Wain was painted, as it exists in 2010, where it is primarily a tourist destination.
