Scientists believe that the first people arrived in Scotland about 8,000 years ago. The first permanent settlements appeared 6,000 years ago. The written history of Scotland begins with the Roman conquest of Britain, when they were seized, received the status of the Roman provinces, and became known as Britain's present-day England and Wales.

During the centuries Scottish kingdom expanded around the borders of modern Scotland. This is a period of relatively good relations with the Wessex rulers of England.
