The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was endowed by countess A.Lastovskaya and merchants, brothers Nikolay and Egor Mukhanov, in 1863. The most worshipped relic in the church is a Miracle-working cross from Koshary. According to a legend, a rich landlord Yury Vyrodov lived in Koshary in the time of St. Ioasaph (1748-1754) There was a Cross in his house. The Cross had been sent to him by his brother - a novice in a monastery of Mount Athos. But the corrupted landlord felt no reverence for the sacred relic.  One day, after an unsuccessful hunt, Vyrodov ordered his servants to throw the cross in a swamp. The order was obeyed.

In the late 18th century the desecrated Holy Cross was miraculously retrieved. A blind man heard a voice in his sleep, the voice told him, that he would be healed after he had saved the Cross from the Koshary swamp. He went in search for the Cross. He did manage to find it. And once the blind man touched the Holy Cross - his sight recovered and he thanked God for it. Today the Cross can be seen in the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Belgorod.

"White houses, green trees and shining golden domes of the churches" - the image of Belgorod, described by travellers in the early 19th century. The city has always been renowned for its rich Christian Orthodox culture. That is why Belgorod land is rightfully called Holy Belogorye (Svyatoye Belogorye).
