Introduction
The dance is a poem of which
each movement is a word.
Mata Hari
Dance is the most immediate and accessible of the arts because it involves your own body. When you learn to move your body on a note of music, it's exciting. You have taken control over your body, and by learning to do that, you discover that you can take charge of your own life.
How true the above passage depicts the expression – dance. When one is happy or sad, the body shows it all. The way we breathe, walk, everything we do unconsciously is set to rhythm.
Dance is my pulse, my heartbeat, my breathing. It's the rhythm of my life. It's the
expression in time and movement, in happiness, joy, sadness and envy.
Beyond a doubt, there is a great number of dance styles, but everybody agrees ballroom dancing is one of the most gentle, amazing and expressive one. Thus, do you know any ballroom dance clubs in Krasnodar?... Well, there are some… . Have you ever heard about countryside clubs? That is the problem: there are only two of them in village Dinskaya and two in Novotitarovskaya. Unfortunately the situation in other villages lives much to be desired.
Have you ever thought that dancing is also very social and a great way of catching up with friends and meeting new people. Moreover, dancing is a great way of keeping fit no matter what age or shape you are. Dancing is for everybody and it’s never too late to start. Everyone should try it and see how good they feel in both body and mind. A lot of children from our village have to get to Krasnodar to learn dancing.
So isn’t it a good reason to have developed and modernized dance clubs in Krasnodar countryside? That is why I think the subject of this research work is actual.
Thus, we can distinguish the tasks of our research work:
The research work is based on such methods as interviews, sociological interrogations, analyses of newspaper articles and video materials.
Some sites in the Internet gave us information about different ballroom dance clubs, their problems and achievements.
Basic part
“You don't stop dancing from growing old,
you grow old from stopping to dance”
Dance history is difficult to access because dance does not often leave behind clearly identifiable physical artifacts that last over millennia, such as stone tools, hunting implements or cave paintings. It is not possible to say when dance became part of human culture.
Dance has certainly been an important part of ceremony, rituals, celebrations and entertainment since before the birth of the earliest human civilizations. Archaeology delivers traces of dance from prehistoric times such as the 9000 year old Bhimbetka rock shelters paintings in India and Egyptian tomb paintings depicting dancing figures from c. 3300 BC.
Another early use of dance may have been as a precursor to ecstatic trance states in healing rituals. Dance is used for this purpose by many cultures from the Brazilian rainforest to the Kalahari Desert.
In European culture, one of the earliest records of dancing is by Homer, whose "Iliad"; describes chorea.
What do we call “ball dancing”?
Ballroom dance is a set of partner dances, which are enjoyed both socially and comparatively around the world, and growing all the more popular in North America. Because of its performance and entertainment aspects, ballroom dance is also widely enjoyed on stage, film, and television. It became popular at the end of the XIX century.
Ballroom dance may refer, at its widest definition, to almost any type of partner dancing as recreation. However, with the emergence of dance sport in modern times, the term has become narrower in scope. Traditionally, the term refers to the five International Standard and five International Latin style dances (see dance categories in Application№1).
The two styles, while differ in technique, rhythm and costumes, exemplify core elements of ballroom dancing such as control and cohesiveness. Developed in England, the two styles are now regulated by the World Dance Council (WDC). In the United States, two additional variations are popular: American Smooth and American Rhythm, which combine elements of both traditional Latin and Ballroom dances.
Dancing is like a real drug. Although it’s quite hard to train regularly a lot of celebrities, for example, N.Babkina, D. Bilan, J. Zimina etc., continue dance trainings in order to keep fit.
If you are going to dance professionally you should have a dancing master, ballroom dress costumes, shoes, etc. You also should pay for the championships and tournaments.
All things considered we can declare dancing is an expensive hobby. Russian ball clubs have high aesthetic costumes. However, they are not cheap. An average Latin Salsa Dance Dress cost 300$. Moreover dance shoes, accessories and hair look like masterpieces. Can you imagine sometimes a hairdo is fixed by clay and super firm hold hairspray!
This is what foreign celebrities who take part in dance shows think about ballroom dance advantages.
The “Dancing is good for you physically, mentally and socially. I’ve not found anything else that ticks all three boxes. It’s something you can do alone or with friends whether you’re young, old or in between. Dancing also releases feel-good endorphins so going to a class is a great way to boost your mood,” the singer Shakira said.
Recently the BBC Breakfast presenter Susanna Reid announced she had lost half a stone since the show started six weeks ago, simply through training for the Saturday night dance-off:
“While not all of us are able to train 10 hours a day as they do on strictly, hitting the dance floor for just a few hours a week is still a great way to get in shape”.
There is no need to be nervous, even if you’ve never danced before, Hue Grant adds. “When you’re in a dance class as long as you feel good it doesn’t matter if you’re not copying the instructor 100 per cent.
Although life on the dance hall is bright and wonderful it has some disadvantages.
We are happy people because we have no physical defects. But usually we don’t appreciate it. Can you imagine disabled persons feelings or can you believe they like dancing as well? They use powered wheelchair instead of simple one. These people say that dance is a way to feel themselves equal with others. Just watch!
Wheelchair dancing was founded in 60s in Great Britain and became popular in Europe a decade later. Nowadays about 5000 dancers from 40 countries take part in Wheelchair dancing tournaments. There are different forms of it:
Thus the first wheelchair dancing club in Russia was formed in 1997in St Petersburg. The Netherlands is the leader in different competitions and championships. We deem it necessary to mention wheelchair dancing was included in the list of Paralympics games in 1998.
Let us make a tour of our ballroom dance club “Contrast”.
The first club “Contrast” was founded in 1980 by A.E. Aleshkov in Krasnodar. It was one of the first clubs in our city. By that time in our region sports dance was just beginning to become popular and a great number of people had no proper idea of it. Nowadays such kinds of clubs are well-known and on demand. All the best Krasnodar dancing masters graduated “Contrast”, and now they have their own clubs.
Our dance master Denis Alexandrovich Kravtsov is one of the Krasnodar “Contrast’s” graduator. He is an enthusiastic and energetic person. He lives in Krasnodar and it took him real courage to organize a studio in 2007 in the village. But he did his best! He called his club “Contrast”, too.
John Steinbeck, writing about his school days said: “I’ve come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and you know how few artists there are in the world”. Our dance master and his assistants are real artists.
Our club members range from absolute beginners to experienced dancers and we aim to provide a pleasant dancing environment for those who wish to learn to dance socially as well as for those who would like to participate in intercollegiate competition.
However club “Contrast” is at the leaders in lessons with the “6 week social dance combo” course which teaches the popular dances danced at weddings and other social events.
It also specializes in group class instruction, with the option of private lessons, which is not constricted to a specific venue.
Our dance masters have classes at different venues to make it more easily accessible for children and in doing this they are also able to keep their rates very competitive.
All classes are taught in a professional, yet relaxed manner. Our teachers respect their pupils and value them as a reason for lifestyle dancing’s existence. We believe partner dancing embodies respect for one another communication and fun. The members of our club furthermore organize “lifestyle events” that fit in with our client’s hobbies and other interesting pass times. A few examples of these events are: birthday parties, a New Year party, dinner and dance evenings.
Our instructors are sure “Contrast” strives to become a social hub for the children where they can learn new skills, have fun while doing it, meet like-minded people, relax and enhance their social life. As you can see in Application №2 they are on the right way. In 2007 there were only 12 pupils in the club, but now there are 60 pupils. Moreover, some of them are from other villages.
According to the sociological interrogation made in our school 82 per cent of girls and 27 per cent of boys from 9 to 13 years old would like to train in the dance club (Application №3 ). It is clear girls are fond of dancing more than boys. That’s why there’s a lack of boy partners in our club. The main reason boys don’t want to dance is the fair to be mocked by friends and contemporaries. It may be unbelievable but late boy teenagers, my classmates, for instance, would like to learn some kind of sport and ball dances.
We also asked grown up people if they would like to go to ball dance club. 36 per cent of them said «Yes».
We interviewed the members of our dance club “Contrast” and they shared their reason for dancing. It tuned out dancing helps them to express their creativity. Some of the children feel empowered when dancing, others kip fit.
Only 5 per cent of pupils are going to become professional dancers. As Friedrich Nietzsche, the German classical Scholar, Philosopher and Critic of culture said: “You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star”. All the members will be happy to have a pro dancer from our club in future.
Unfortunately “Contrast” has some problems. The number of pupils increases, so the dancing floor doesn’t contain all groups. Moreover, as it was told before there is a lack of man partners. However, our dancers win awards in different tournaments. For example, in 2012 our dancing couple won the first prize in “Sochi-Dance” competition and in 2013 they were the best in Anapa and Moscow as well.
Conclusion
My partner is music
Judith Jamison, U.S. dancer.
If you think about it, the flowers dance in the breeze, the trees dance, the birds have their special dance, the animals in the wild have their dance moments, and the fishes in the sea dance gracefully and sometimes wildly. This is so natural so why would people be left out?
Dance is my passion because when I'm happy and feel the impulse to express myself I go ahead and do it and lose myself. I lose myself in the music. I feel as if I can move more beautifully than anyone in the world. My imagination takes over. I feel like I can enter a million universes just by dancing. I can fly, I can teleport, I can travel in the most fantastic ways nobody but me could see or understand. I feel unstoppable. I feel invincible. I feel incredible, joyful and wonderful. It's the best feeling anyone that loves to dance can have. Many people share my feelings. That is why it is necessary to have a local dance clubs and professional dance masters dedicated to their profession.
All these efforts need to continue a beautiful and important job our instructors do.
