History of water polo Water polo was invented in the second half of the 19th century in Great Britain by William Wilson. Rugby served as a prototype of the game . Early versions of the game allowed use of force in fight for the ball. T he g ame got a modern form in the 1880th years.

The field for game For games of men's teams the distance between front lines has to be not less than 20 m, but no more than 30 m. The width of the game field has to be not less than 10 m, but no more than 20 m. On both sides of the game field there are gates painted in white color. They have to be strictly in the middle of the line of gates. The minimum water temperature for carrying out the game has to be 16 °C.

Rules It isn't allowed to attack the player who isn't owning a ball. Also the rules forbid to heat a ball under water. It is forbidden to heat, drag and hold the player who isn't owning a ball — it is considered a gross blunder. Having made a gross blunder, the player leaves from water on 20 sec. After penal time the player can return to the game. The pass given to partners usually is given by air — the ball doesn't concern water. Sometimes the pass is transferred with a rebound from water specially to the player who is closer to the gate so that he could jump out of water and score a goal.

Hats One of the most recognizable attributes of the game are hats with ear protectors which protect ears of players from powerful blows of the ball. One of playing teams has to be in hats of white color, and another in hats of the contrasting color. Goalkeepers have to play in hats of red color. The hat has to be clasped under a chin. The hats have numbers . For international matches the abbreviation of the country has to be in front o f the hats and also a drawing of the national flag of the country is possible.

Ball The ball has to be round and have an air chamber with the closed nipple. The ball has to be without external peelings, waterproof and not covered with fat or similar substance. The weight of the ball has to be ranging from 400 to 450 grams. For games of men's teams the ball’s length on a circle has to be not less than 0,68 m, but no more than 0,71 m, and the pressure in it has to be within 90-97 kPa
