Blue Lakes - a unique natural phenomenon. Blue Lakes - a group of five karsts lakes in Cherek district of Kabardino-Balkaria. Located at the foot of the rocky ridge at the entrance to the gorge. The uniqueness of the Lower blue lake lies in its great depth (258m).

Surface water temperature in summer and winter is not changed (9.3 C). No stream nor river fails i nto the lakes, but every day it is full of about 70 million liters. The lake level is unchanged that explains the powerful underwater sources.

The Water is blue because of hydrogen sulfide and refraction of light rays in a deep pool. Flora and fauna of the lake due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide is very poor. However, the nature here is quite: green hills, dense beech forests on steep slopes, the sun shining on the horizon.
