Every child has a favourite toy. My favourite toy is a teddy bear. I love teddy bears very much. I have a collection of different teddy bears.

According to Wikipedia «The teddy bear is a stuffed toy bear». Many children like to play with this soft toy . But do they know about the history of the Teddy Bear? Where are Teddy bears from?

The object of my research is history of  Teddy bear.

The subject of research is the most popular Teddy bear

The aim of my research is to learn and present a history of a famous toy "Teddy bear" to all school children.

My tasks of  research are:

1. to study the history of teddy bear;
2. to collect the information about the most popular teddy bears;
3. to present my research work;
4. to make a booklet  “The Famous Teddy Bears”

Ways of researching: studying some information from different sources on this theme; questioning of pupils from secondary school Efremkino; analysis, classification

The novelty of my work is nobody at my school has researched this theme before me.

Chapter I. The history of the Teddy Bear

The Teddy bear is the most popular toy. There are two stories of the birth of the teddy bear. Who made the first toy bear called teddy bear?

1.1 German Story
A seamstress lived in the little town. Her name was Margaret Shtrayf. She was ill, and she can not go. Therefore Margaret liked to make the soft toys very much. Her toys were very beautiful and children liked them.  Margaret’s parents helped her to open the shop, which later became a family's business. 
In 1902 year a first Teddy bear appeared. The bear made a lot of noise in the fair in Lepthing. It won a price and guests from the USA liked it very much. In 1902 year a first Teddy bear appeared. 1.2 American story
Teddy bear got his name from the president of the USA Teodor Rusvelt. One day American president went to the district of Smids, state Missisippi. In the local forests there were many animals. Teodor Rusvelt decided to hunt. His assistants wanted to help the president and caught a little bear. Roosevelt was angry and released a bear. 
The caricature about a little bear and a kind president appeared next day .

An owner of a toys shop,Morris Michtom, in New York saw this caricature . He made a soft bear and sent the toy to the president Roosevelt and asked if he could give him the name Teddy.

The president agreed and  Michtom named the bear Teddy. (the child's name of Theodore).

“…I'm not sure that the use of my name will bring success to the production of teddy bears, but if you so insist, please, you can name it after me.”

Later a Teddy bear was a president’s mascot and helped him to win in the elections in the second time. 

Chapter II. Teddy bear museums

Teddy bears are the most popular toys in every family. Both boys and girls like teddy bears.  Many people collect teddy bears.

There are many teddy bear museums around the world. The world's first Teddy Bear Museum was opened in England in 1984 . It was founded by Judy Sparrow and had a collection of antique teddy bears.

In 1990, a similar foundation was set up in Naples, Florida, United States. These were closed in 2006 and 2005 respectively, and the bears were sold in auctions, but there are many teddy bear museums around the world today. 

Teddy bear festivals have now become popular around the world, taking place in Australia, America, Canada, Great Britain, Japan and Germany .

The teddy bear has become a very popular character of stories, songs and cartoons. [Appendix 1]

Chapter III. Famous Teddy Bears

Many teddy bears have become famous over the years, including Paddington Bear, Rupert Bear, and, of course, Winnie the Pooh.

Paddington Bear

All kids in Great Britain love Paddington Bear. One of the railway stations in London has his name. There is a statue of Paddington Bear at this station. Paddington Bear is a book hero.  English writer Michael Bond writes books about Paddington Bear. He came to London from Peru with a suitcase and a table “Pleasе look after this Bear.”

The Browns found the Bear at the Paddington railway station and now he lives happily in their family.

There are also many animated TV series about Paddington Bear. Kids like to watch them. Paddington Bear is very funny. He is always polite. But he always gets into trouble. And always tries to do good things.

And also Paddington Bear is a toy. The first toy of Paddington bear was made in England.

Rupert Bear

Rupert Bear is the hero of funny comics made by the English painter Mary Tourtel. He is a white bear who lives in Nutwood with his parents. Very often he wears a red jumper, tartan trousers and a stylish yellow scarf.

Rupert has got a lot of friends which he calls “pals” or “chums”.He has many adventures with them.

The English newspaper“ Daily Express” wrote about Rupert Bear for the first time in 1920. Quickly he became very popular with English kids.

For kids, Rupert is the symbol of freedom: he climbs mountains, digs underground tunnels far from home.

Rupert is the favourite teddy bear of Paul McCartney from “The Beatles”. Paul McCartney made the song that made Rupert Bear famous.( Rupert and the Frog Song)

Winnie-the Pooh

On August 21, 1921, A.A. Milne gave his son, Christopher Robin Milne, a teddy bear for his first birthday. In 1926 A. Milne wrote a book about the adventures of the teddy bear. The name of the teddy bear was Winnie-the Pooh.

Misha

Misha, also known as Mishka or The Olympic Mishka , is the name of the Russian Bear mascot of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games (the XXII Summer Olympics). He was designed by children's books illustrator Victor Chizhikov.

Chapter IV. Do you know about teddy bear?

At the beginning of my work I asked my schoolmates about  their favourite toy. To know the attitude of my schoolmates to Teddy bears I proposed them to answer some questions.

1. Do you have Teddy Bears ? Did you have Teddy bear?
2. Can you name any famous teddy bears?
3. Do you know songs, cartoons, fairy tales about Teddy Bear?
4. Why do you like teddy bears?    

 I asked 30 pupils from our school (15 girls,15 boys).

1.  To the first question most of the girls (12) said that they have this kind of toy. Some girls prefer dolls, barbies .The 5 boys answered that they like cars, planes, trains. Some boys are interested in robots, computer games.  They don’t like stuffed toys.

2. Can you name any famous teddy bears? Most of the pupils (90%) know about Winnie-the Pooh.

3. The third question was “Do you know songs, cartoons, fairy tales about Teddy Bear?”.  The  results : twenty seven pupils answered that they like to watch cartoon “Winnie-the Pooh”, but most of pupils don’t know songs about teddy bears.

4. So, why do you like teddy bears? Here are the answers:

1) I like teddy bears because they are soft, cuddly, cute.

2) I like to play with teddy bears.

3) ) I like to hug teddy bears! As they give you the warm and perfect hug anytime.

4) When we are sad, we might hug a teddy bear. When we are scared, me may hug a teddy bear. So , teddy bear are like our protectors.

5) Because Teddies are magic, they are on the child's side even when Mum and Dad are not, so they are like a little Hero Pals. 

My conclusion:  Teddy Bears are very popular in different countries. They are popular in our school, too.

Conclusion

I have achieved the aim of my work. I read different books, asked my friends and their parents, worked in Internet.  I’ve made the booklet “Teddy bear”

During my work on the project I improved my English. I learnt a lot of new words .  I learnt to make slides.

I think that my work is interesting not only for me but for some  pupils who wants to know about the history of their favourite toy.
