The object of the research work: different ways of communication.
The subject of the research: comparison analyzing of internet communication.
CHAPTER 1
INTERNET AS A MODERN WAY OF COMMUNICATION
1.1 THE HISTORY OF THE INTERNET
The history of the Internet began in the United States in 1969. It was a military experiment, designed to help to survive during a nuclear war, when everything around might be polluted by radiation and it would be dangerous to get out for any living being to get some information to anywhere. Information sent over the Internet takes the shortest and safest path available from one computer to another. Because of this, any two computers on the net will be able to stay in touch with each other as long as there is a single route between them. This technology was called packet switching.
The funding of a new U.S. backbone by the National Science Foundation in the 1980s, as well as private funding for other commercial backbones, led to worldwide participation in the development of new networking technologies, and the merger of many networks. The commercialization of what was by the 1990s an international network resulted in its popularization and incorporation into virtually every aspect of modern human life.
As of 2009, an estimated quarter of Earth's population used the services of the Internet.
Most of the Internet host computers are in the United States of America. It is clear that the accurate number of users can be counted fairly approximately, nobody knows exactly how many people use the Internet today, because there are hundreds of millions of users and their number is growing.
Nowadays the most popular Internet service is e-mail. Most of the people use the network only for sending and receiving e-mail messages. They can do it either they are at home or in the internet clubs or at work. Other popular services are available in the Internet too. It is reading news, available on some dedicated news servers, telnet, FTP servers, etc.
In many countries, the Internet could provide businessmen with a reliable, alternative to the expensive and unreliable telecommunications systems its own system of communications. Commercial users can communicate cheaply over the Internet with the rest of the world. When they send e-mail messages, they only have to pay for phone calls to their local service providers, not for international calls around the world, when you pay a good deal of money.
But saving money is only the first step and not the last one. There is a commercial use of this network and it is drastically increasing. Now you can work through the internet, gambling and playing through the net.
1.2 INTERNET PIONEERS
Vannevar Bush (1890–1974) helped to establish a partnership between U.S. military, university research, and independent think tanks. He was appointed Chairman of the National Defense Research Committee in 1940 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, appointed Director of the Office of Scientific Research and Development in 1941, and from 1946 to 1947, he served as chairman of the Joint Research and Development Board.
Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider (1915–1990) was a faculty member of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a researcher at Bolt, Beranek and Newman. He developed the idea of a universal network at the Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) of the United States Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
Robert W. Taylor (born 1932) was a director of the Information Processing Techniques Office from 1965 through 1969. He was the founder and manager of Digital Equipment Corporation's Systems Research Center until 1996. The 1968 paper, "The Computer as a Communication Device", that he wrote together with J.C.R. Licklider starts out: "In a few years, men will be able to communicate more effectively through a machine than face to face.”
Leonard Kleinrock (born 1934) published his first paper on digital network communications, "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets", in 1961.
Jon Postel (1943–1998) was a researcher at the Information Sciences Institute. He was editor of all early Internet standards specifications, such as the Request for Comment series. His beard and sandals made him "the most recognizable archetype of an Internet pioneer".
Peter T. Kirstein (born 1933) is a British computer scientist and a leader in the international development of the Internet. In 1978 he co-authored "Issues in packet-network interconnection" with Vint Cerf, one of the early technical papers on the internet concept
1.3 STATISTICS OF INTERNET USAGE
Internet usage has seen tremendous growth. From 2000 to 2009, the number of Internet users globally rose from 394 million to 1.858 billion. By 2010, 22 percent of the world's population had access to computers with 1 billion Google searches every day, 300 million Internet users reading blogs, and 2 billion videos viewed daily on You Tube. In 2014 the world's Internet users surpassed 3 billion or 43.6 percent of world population.
The prevalent language for communication on the Internet has been English. This may be a result of the origin of the Internet, as well as the language's role as a lingua franca.
After English (27%), the most requested languages on the World Wide Web are Chinese (25%), Spanish (8%), Japanese (5%), Portuguese and German (4% each), Arabic, French and Russian (3% each), and Korean (2%).
By region, 42% of the world's Internet users are based in Asia, 24% in Europe, 14% in North America, 10% in Latin America and the Caribbean taken together, 6% in Africa, 3% in the Middle East and 1% in Australia/Oceania.
The Internet's technologies have developed enough in recent years, especially in the use of Unicode, that good facilities are available for development and communication in the world's widely used languages.
In an American study in 2005, the percentage of men using the Internet was very slightly ahead of the percentage of women, although this difference reversed in those under 30. Men logged on more often, spent more time online, and were more likely to be broadband users, whereas women tended to make more use of opportunities to communicate (such as email). Men were more likely to use the Internet to pay bills, participate in auctions, and for recreation such as downloading music and videos. Men and women were equally likely to use the Internet for shopping and banking.
More recent studies indicate that in 2008, women significantly outnumbered men on most social networking sites, such as Facebook and Myspace. In addition, women watched more streaming content, whereas men downloaded more.
Internet is used for the different purposes.
The Internet is used for information search, search of different interesting things:
The Internet can be used for entertainments:
Nowadays people communicate through the Internet. This is a visual form of communication. It has its own advantages and disadvantages.
The Internet is one of the greatest inventions of all time. The Internet has made it possible for us to do lots of things. People can shop in online stores, communicate with family and friends via Skype or Facebook, watch the latest videos on YouTube, blog and make money from it, and so much more.
The Internet has proven to be very useful and has come with lots of advantages. Here are some advantages and disadvantages of the Internet.
Advantages of the Internet
The Internet has made it easy for people to communicate with others because it is cheap and convenient. The only costs incurred are those paid to the Internet service provider. If you want to talk to someone who is in another part of the globe, you can just fire up Skype or any other communication app and hold a video chat. The Internet acts as common global platform where people explore ideologies and cultures without limitation.
The Internet is swamped with information about anything and everything.
You can get the latest news, breakthroughs in all fields including medicine and even research publications at the click of a button. The Internet is basically a globally accessible repository of knowledge, and the best part is everyone gets to chip in.
Thanks to the Internet, sharing information is fast and seamless. If you want to tell your 30 friends about your latest promotion, you can do so in an instant. You can use social media sites such as Facebook or an IM app. They will all get the news at the same time. You can also share music, videos and any other file.
Today it is possible to carry out financial transactions online. You can transfer funds, pay taxes and utility bills or book movie tickets over the Internet in the comfort of your office or home.
This is one of the major reasons why many people enjoy surfing the Internet – entertainment. You can watch movies, listen to music, read your favorite celebrity gossip columns and play games over the Internet. The Internet has become a mammoth amusement park that never closes.
The Internet can be most useful for completing projects in schools and colleges. Teens can contact other teens or their teachers via the E-mail if they have queries about any information. At the same time, teachers can also contact the parents and guardians easily using the Internet. Another positive effect of the Internet in education is distance education or online learning.
Spamming is the sending of unwanted and useless emails to random people. These emails obstruct the recipient needlessly. They are illegal and can cause frustration because they make it hard for people to access their email accounts. Luckily, most email service providers have a security system in place to prevent spam emails from going to your inbox.
These are malicious programs that plague the Internet time and again. They attack a computer with the sole intent of causing harm. They can make the computer malfunction or even this can be very costly especially if you lose important data. Worse yet is the fact that you can easily fall victim to malicious software by clicking on a link on the Internet that appears genuine. Internet viruses can be categorized to three types - those that harm your executable boot files and system, those that affect a specific file by destroying it and those that keep changing things in your computer like Word files. You can protect yourself by installing a reliable anti-virus program on your computer before accessing the Internet.
The fact that the Internet has become a market place has also seen a rise in fraud cases. Credit/debit card details are particularly vulnerable. This calls for extreme caution when transacting online. Make sure to use a reliable payment processor instead of sending your details directly to an individual or business.
Just like everything else, people also get addicted to the Internet. This may sound strange, but some people spend more than their fair amount of time on the Internet. This affects their social interactions a great deal. Internet addiction has been known to be a major cause of obesity and has, in some cases, led to some diseases like carpal tunnel syndrome. With some help, people addicted to the Internet can overcome this challenge.
The fact that the Internet has all information you could ever need is both a good thing and a bad thing. This is because it contains age-inappropriate content like pornography. Unfortunately, such content can be accessed by children as young as ten. All guardians and parents can do about it is lock out harmful sites to keep their children safe. Nevertheless, this is not a full proof strategy as children can still access the Internet from other devices.
In the conclusion I`d like to say that as we see there are both advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet. There is no effective control in the Internet because of a huge amount of information circulating through the net. It is like a tremendous library and market together.
1.5 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE INTERNET
The prototype for the Internet was created in the sixties by the US Defense Department. To ensure that communication could be kept open in the event of a nuclear attack, it created a computer network known as Arpanet — the Advanced Research Project Agency Network.
The first attempt to connect two computers and allow them to communicate with one another was made by researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles and the Stanford Research Institute in October in 1969.
The first people to coin the term 'internet' were two scientists, Vinton Cerf (known as 'father of the Internet') and his collaborator Bob Kahn, who in 1974 devised a means by which data could be transmitted across a global-network of computers.
An Oxford graduate, Tim Berners-Lee, set up the first 'www server' (a Server receives and sends messages) to store the archive of the European Particle Physics Laboratory in Switzerland.
The first e-mail ever sent was in 1972 between computers in two American universities. The most frequently used search word on the net is "sex", typed in 1,550,000 times every month.
The most mentioned male on the Internet is President Bill Clinton, whose name is linked to 1,542,790 sites.
The most mentioned female on the Internet is the actress Pamela Anderson, whose name is linked to 1,542,282 sites.
CHAPTER 2
RESEARCHING PART
Making this work I asked students from our school (1 - 11 forms) to find out some things about the Internet. The students had to answer a questionnaire. [Appendix 1]
The list of questions:
The results of the questioning showed that most of the students 46 (32%) students spend 2 hours playing on a computer. 40 (25%) students answered that they spend much time playing computer games. Only 14 (9%) students said that they don’t play computer games at all.
Also, I asked the children about their hobbies. The students of the 6st, 7th and 8th forms like to play computer games. The students of the 10th form prefer the Internet to computer games. They like to find interesting information in the Internet and to communicate with each other using a computer. Other hobbies of the children are playing sport, reading books and dancing. I am pleased to conclude that computer games, on the whole, do not replace other leisure activities like sports or reading.
I wanted to know the children’s opinions about computer games. Is it good or bad to play them? The students of the 6th and 7th forms think that it is good. The students of the 10-11th forms believe that it is bad. But the most of the students consider that it is good to play games on a computer.
I have found out that all the pupils spend a lot of time surfing the Net. They use computers to send emails and to do research for school work. They also like to surf the Net for fun.
About 82 % of the pupils spend their time in the Internet (Vkontakte.ru). I don’t think it is very bad because it is the best way to spend your time with friends without leaving home. And communications through the internet are always successful.
96 % of children play on-line games. The most popular game is Counter Strike. In my opinion playing this game is normal if it is only a way to relax but it is a real danger if you are mad about this game. I think that we mustn't waste time on playing games instead of studying. As a result, we can end up with low marks from our teachers!
CONCLUSION
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that serves billions of users worldwide. Most traditional communications media including telephone, music, film, and television are reshaped or redefined by the Internet, giving birth to new services. Newspapers, books and other print publishing are adapting to Web site technology.
The Internet has enabled or accelerated new forms of human interactions through instant messaging, Internet forums, and social networking. Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire industries.
To sum everything up, I would like to say that the Internet is an extremely useful invention of mankind. It helps to make our lives easier. It is much easier to communicate through the Internet than spend more money on phone calls.
I would like to advice everybody:
