History New Year in Russia is celebrated on January 1, the first day of the Gregorian Calendar. In earlier times, New Year was celebrated in the month of September. Later, this day was forbidden by Peter the Great. In 1699, a decree was read about counting of years from Birth of Christ since January 1. Since then, New Year became a family holiday for the people of Russia.

New Year's traditions The main elements of the Russian New Year are: a Christmas tree, a lavish table, giving and receiving gifts, Ded Moroz and Snegurochka, watching TV-programs, clock chimes and the President’s speech.

New Year's traditions New Year’s dinner usually includes Russian traditional dishes: Olivie salad, sparkling wine, and mandarins. A part of the New Year’s celebration is a special president’s speech, which begins 5 minutes before midnight. When the clock strikes midnight, people start making toasts with champagne and wish each other “Happy New Year”, while listening to the national anthem.

Symbols of the New Year The symbol of the Russian New Year is Father Frost(Ded Moroz). He brings gifts to well-behaved children. That's why some people like to dress up as Father Frost for their children. He also has a granddaughter named Snow Maiden(Snegurochka). Together they bring a festive mood.
