The Creation of London London began as the Roman settlement of Londinium around AD 43. The Romans chose the site because the Thames was narrow enough to bridge , making it ideal for trade and defence . After the fall of the Roman Empire , the city was largely abandoned , but later a new Anglo‑Saxon settlement called Lundenwic grew nearby . In 1066, after the Norman Conquest , William the Conqueror strengthened the city and commissioned the Tower of London . The Great Fire of 1666 destroyed much of the city , leading to a major rebuilding effort . Over the following centuries , London grew into a powerful economic and political centre .
