Bashkortostan is an independent state within the Russian Federation.

The Independent Republic of Bashkortostan was created on11th Octo-

ber ,1990.The Head of State in the Republic ,and its highest official, is

the President,Murtaza G.Rakhimov.

In terms of legislation and representative body is the State Assembly, cal-led the Kurultai.The highest executive body in the republic is the Cabi-

net of Ministers.

There are citizens of approximately one hundred different nationalities

living in Bashkortostan. They include Bashkirs, Russians, Tatars,Cuva-

shes,Maris,Ukrainians and Germans. The original people of the territo-

ry,however,are the Bashkirs.

The Republic of Bashkortostan has 21 cities. The largest are Ufa, Ster-

litamak, Salavat, Neftekamsk and Oktyabr’skiy.Ufa is the capital city,

andit was founded in 1574.Ufa now has a population of  1.1 million peo-

ple.Ufa is one of the largest cities not only in our country but in the wor-

ld .It is the cultural center of our republic. There are many, museums,

monuments, exhibitions, concert halls,theatrs,cinemas in Ufa. Bashkir

Drama theatre is the most famous theatre of the republic.Salavat Yulaev

Square with the monument to the famous Bashkir hero is the favorite

place of children and grow-ups.

The Bashkortostan government is voted in by a majority of the multi-

ethnic people of the  republic during the elections every five years. The

government is working towards continuing to strengthen the political

and economic independence of Bashkortostan within the Russian Fede-

ration as a whole.

On 3rd August ,1994,a treaty was signed which clearly states how the

Balance of power will be divided between the republic and the Russian

Federation. Since that time, more than a dozen intergovernmental have been signed to make sure the provisions of the treaty are carried out pro-

perly and effectively. Land, minerals and other natural resources and

assets in the republic, as well as all economic ,research and scientific

discoveries, are deemed to be the property of Bashkortostan.
