It was a lovely day! Why not sledge in such frosty weather? I was sledging and was so happy when I suddenly saw her. She was crying. Who might cry in such a lovely day? I wanted to come up and comfort that slim teenage girl with big blue eyes. I came up and asked:

  • Why are you crying?
  • I have lost my Burka.
  • Who’s that?
  • It’s my best friend.
  • A strange name for a friend.
  • Well, he’s a kitten. Have you seen him? A nice, small, grey kitten with dark stripes.
  • No, I haven’t. I can help you find him.

The next two hours while we were looking for the cat I was the happiest boy in the world.

Lida was special. She was friendly and behaved simply, was talkative and often laughed. Despite that Lida looked haunted.

Lida told that she lived with her grandmother. She said she didn’t have parents but didn’t tell what happened to them.

It was dark when we finally found her cat. Shortly after that her grandma called her home. The old lady came up to us and asked Lida about me.

  • Who’s that?
  • It’s my new friend, Dima.
  • Well, dear, friends are not worth making. Come home.

Lida didn’t look at me. She stretched her hand to the grandma and went home. I was embarrassed.

Later that evening I asked mom about that girl.

  • Mom, do you know that girl Lida, she lives in the next block house all alone with her grandma? Is she an orphan?
  • I do. Yes she is.
  • Why did her granny say friends are not worth making?
  • She doesn’t want Lida to suffer, perhaps. The girl has had tough times already.
  • What happened to her?
  • Isn’t it time you went to bed?
  • I need to know!
  • You liked that girl, did you?

I didn’t reply. My mom finally told me that Lida’s parents died. Her family was not a good one. Lida loved her parents and they didn’t love her. They just didn’t notice the poor thing. Her father was an alcoholic and one day he killed Lida’s mom. He was sent to prison where he committed a suicide. Grandma took care of Lida.

How happy was I when Lida joined our class! The whole year I could be by her side and we become real friends. Then Lida’s grandma died. Lida was heartbroken. So was I.

She was sent to some distant relatives and for some time I lost her trace.

My wife interrupted my thoughts:

  • Dima, will you finally help me? Burka is lost again.
  • I’m coming, Lida. We’ll find him.
