URANUS

Uranus is the seventh planet far from the Sun and the third-largest planet in the Solar system. It is named after the ancient Greek deity of the sky Uranus.

Though it is visible to the unaided eye like the five classical planets, it was never recognised as a planet by the ancient observers. It has got some dimness and a slow orbit. Sir William Herschel announced this discovery on March 13 in 1381. For the first time he extended the bouderies of already known Solar system in Modern history. Uranus was also the fisrt planet discovered with a telescope.

Uranus is similar in composition to Neptun and both are composed of different elements from those of the larger gas giants as Jupiter and Saturn. Astronomers sometimes place them in a separate category “the ice giants”. Uranus’s atmosphere, being similar to Jupiter’s and Saturn’s in its primary composition of hydrogen and helium, contains more “ice” such as water, ammonia and methanol, along with traces of hydrocarbons. It is the coldest planetory atmosphere in the Solar system. Its minimum temperature is minus 224 degrees Celsius. It has a complex layered cloud structure. In contrast the interior of Uranus is mainly composed of the ice rock.

Like the other giant planets Uranus has a ring system, a magnetosphere and numerous moons. The Uranus system has a unique configuration among the planets because its axis of rotation is tilted sideways. Seen from the Earth, Uranus’s rings can sometimes appear to circle the planet like an archery target and its moons revolve around it like the hands of a clock. There are twenty-seven moons of Uranus known to date.
