John Galsworthy was born on August 14, 1867 in the English city of Kingston upon Thames, in a wealthy family. He was an only child. He received his education first at Harrow College and the University of Oxford. At the age of 28, John Galsworthy decided for himself that he would become a writer.

In 1905, Galsworthy married Ada Pearson, the ex-wife of a cousin. For ten years prior to this marriage, Galsworthy had been secretly dating his future wife. Ada became the prototype for many of the heroines of Galsworthy's works.

In 1929, for his services to literature, he became a member of the Order of Merit. In November 1932, Galsworthy was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. At that time, he was suffering from severe headaches as a result of a rapidly developing brain tumor, and English writers were able to congratulate a colleague only in absentia

John Galsworthy became the author of 20 novels, 27 plays, 3 collections of poetry, 173 short stories, 5 essays, 700 letters and many other sketches on various topics.

Galsworthy died on January 31, 1933 in London . He lived in West Sussex for the last seven years of his life. According to the will of the author, his body was cremated, and the ashes were scattered from the plane. A cenotaph has been erected in Highgate Cemetery in memory of the writer.
