Thomas Arnold

 Thomas Arnold (1795 – 1842), a British educator and historian.

As headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841, he introduced several reforms that had much influence on public school education in England. The education developed at Rugby was described in «Tom Brown’s Schooldays», a novel written by a former pupil, Thomas Hughes. The book

was filmed in 2005. Thomas Arnold introduced the study of mathematics, geography, modern history and modern languages, instituted the form system and the prefect system to keep discipline. He modernized the teaching  of Classics by directing attention to literary, moral or historical questions, independent thought was encouraged. Dr. Thomas Arnold became a symbol of reform in the British educational system.
