Introduction Earth's magnetic field, also known as the geomagnetic field, is the magnetic field that extends from the Earth's interior to where it meets the solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun . Although the Magnetic Poles do shift with time, this wandering is slow enough that a simple compass remains useful for navigation.

The north magnetic pole In 1831 British polar explorer John Ross discovered in the Canadian archipelago North Magnetic Pole The North Magnetic Pole is the point on the surface of Earth's Northern Hemisphere at which the planet's magnetic field points vertically downwards. In other words, if a magnetic compass needle is allowed to rotate about a horizontal axis, it will point straight down. The North Magnetic Pole moves over time due to magnetic changes in the Earth's core.

Over the past 100 years, the magnetic pole in the southern hemisphere has moved almost 900 km and reached the Indian Ocean. The latest data as the Arctic magnetic pole showed that from 1973 to 1984 it was running 120 km, from 1984 to 1994 - more than 150 km. As of early 2007, the drift velocity of the magnetic north pole has increased to 10 km / year in the 1970s to 60 km / year in 2004.

Meaning of geomagnetic field The magnetosphere protects the Earth from cosmic rays that would otherwise strip away the upper atmosphere, including the ozone layer that protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation . For example, calculations of the loss of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere of Mars, resulting from scavenging of ions by the solar wind, indicate that the dissipation of the magnetic field of Mars caused a near-total loss of its atmosphere.
