DISCUSSION College in Our Life

1. Teacher (T):  After the home, the school is the main social environment for young people. Not only is school a place of education, it is a place where young people develop their interpersonal skills.

           Now let's talk about our college. Answer these questions and give reasons for your answer(s).

  1. How long have you been studying in this college? Is it easy or difficult to study here?
  2. Some people say that school is your second home. What do you think? Can you say that college is your "second home"?
  3. Do you think college gives you enough knowledge in the subjects you are interested in?
  4. What would you prefer - to have the same teacher (a regular teacher) in a subject or to have a new teacher every year?
  5. Why do some students hate college?

Exercise 1. These are student rules and responsibilities. Say whether they are also true in our college.

  1. Students should be in the classroom five minutes before the teacher and they mustn't leave before the lesson has ended.
  2. Students should be polite to one another and respectful to the teacher.
  3. Students are not supposed to chew gum in class.
  4.  Students mustn't use the following excuses if they haven't done their homework: “The dog ate it” or “It fell out of my bag”.
  5. Students may not smoke in college.
  6. Never cheat on a test.
  7. Loitering is not allowed in or around the college grounds if a teacher is not present.
  8. Raise your hand when you want to ask a question in class.

 10. If you have been absent from college you must present a written note signed by your parent or a doctor.

  1. Now think what rules and regulations teachers should follow.
  2. Say        what you like and dislike in your college. What would you like to tell foreign students about your college and its traditions?
  3. Say what you think is necessary to do to make your school life more interesting.
  4. Say        if you are satisfied or not satisfied with the quality of education you receive, with your own participation in college activities. Give your reasons.

c) What is your idea of a modern college? What changes would you like to introduce in your college?

  1. T: Now let us talk about school. There are a lot of school problems for discussion. One of them is about school uniforms. What do you think about school uniforms? What are your arguments FOR and AGAINST school uniforms? What is your idea of a good/attractive/comfortable school uniform? (You may use these expressions.)


  1. to give a common identity to the school
  2. if all the students in a school wear the same type of clothes in matching colors and styles, they tend to look smart when they are all together
  3. students whose parents can't  afford  nice or stylish clothes look the same as everyone  else and so don't  feel inferior

  1. you don't have a chance to develop personal taste in the way you dress
  2. people  who look scruffy usually look scruffy in their uniforms too. You can always tell the people who come from poor homes because their uniforms are not as new or don't fit properly
  3. most schools choose such horrible colors and styles, that don't suit young people at all

  1. T: Russian schools, 20 or 30 years ago, were very different from the way they are today. Were schools better

or worse than they are now? Discuss with your parents/grandparents. Give reasons for your opinion.


  1. Teachers are not usually very strict. Classes are often very noise, and pupils are sometimes rude to teachers.
  2. Men teachers don't always wear ties. Women teachers sometimes wear trousers or jeans.
  3. We have a kind of uniform but it's very free.

  1. Girls often wear lipstick or eye-shadow and earrings.
  2. Teachers do not hit pupils, but they send them to the headmaster.
  3. Some schools have religious studies.

1. There are many new subjects at school. Each school may have its own programme.


  1. Teachers were much stricter. Classes were much quieter and there was better discipline. Pupils were more polite to teachers.
  2. Men teachers always wore ties, and women teachers wore only skirts and dresses.
  3. They had much stricter rules about uniforms. They all wore the same school dress or school blazer.
  4. The girls never wore make-up or jewelry.
  5. Teachers sometimes hit 'bad' pupils.
  6. Religion was not taught at school.
  7. School was more boring. All schools had the same programme and textbooks across the country.

5.T: Going to college doesn't involve having fun. What do you think about it? Why do you go to college?

Exercise 2. Rate these reasons in their order of importance ( 1 being the most important) and say what your reasons are.

  • to acquire general knowledge, to learn information
  • to prepare for a job
  • to meet other young people
  • to give one’s parents some peace and quiet
  • to find out what one is really interested in
  • to test one's intelligence
  • to learn discipline and order
  • to he kept dependent
  • to train one's memory
  • to pass exams
  • to develop social skills when dealing with others

Exercise 2. Approve or disapprove of these ideas. Give your reasons.

  1. The more you know the more interested you are in the world.
  2. Speak little but listen well to what others say.
  3. The more you study, the more you know. The more you know, the more you forget. The more you forget, the less you know. The less you know, the less you forget. The less you forget, the more you know. So why study? (an English joke)

5. Practice makes perfect.


Each group represents journalists and editors of famous newspapers and magazines. They receive a lot of letters from teens with their problems (each working group is given 1-2 letters). The task is to discuss the letter(s), and to give some advice (they may ask a question of other working groups).

I'm very worried because the lessons at school are too difficult for me. Everything would be OK if we didn't have poor marks, tests and reports all the time. I don't like to do my homework. In my opinion homework is a waste of time. We have exams soon, and I know I'm going to fail them. My parents will be furious. Please, help.

My problem is with my French lesson. Most lessons are boring. Sometimes I just have to doodle on my desk or write letters, otherwise I'd fall asleep. My class mistress forces me to go, because she says, it 'II be good for me. I absolutely hate them! What can I do?

Letter 3

Please, help us, because we're in terrible trouble. School discipline is a major worry. There are bullies at my school who hit and kick me and my mates. We are victims of theft. They say we have to give them our lunch money or they will really hurt us. We're frightened of them. What shall we do?

Letter 4

My problem is with my Mum. She thinks I’m everything that is wonderful, beautiful and clever - and she goes around saying so. It makes me feel very uncomfortable. She tells everybody that I'm going to get wonderful exam results and get some fantastic job. The truth is that I'm not very brainy at all and will be lucky just to pass my exams. How can I explain to her that I'm not as clever as she thinks?

TOURS/EXCURSIONS Example. A school tour You are going to have a college tour. The group is divided into two parts. One part of students represents guests from an English-speaking country, the second group represents the students of your college. You are walking around the college telling about it and showing different labs and classrooms. The guests are asking different questions.
