I. Australia Today

Australia is a continent, a country and an island all at the same time. It is the sixth largest country and the smallest continent in the world. Australia is located in the southern hemisphere. That is why it has summer when we have winter and it has winter when we have summer. It is interesting to know that January is the hottest month in Australia.

Australia is situated south of Asia, between the Pacific and the Indian Oceans. Australia is the world's driest continent. Huge areas of land are so dry that they are uninhabited. There are rainforests in the north, snowfields in the south-east, deserts in the centre and fertile croplands in the south and south-west. Australia is also the flattest continent after Antarctica.

Australia is a very urban country. About 70 per cent of the population live in the 10 largest cities. Most of the population is in the south-eastern corner of the country and only 15 per cent of the population live in rural areas. Canberra is the capital of Australia. It is not the biggest city. Sydney and Melbourne are much larger. The state of Tasmania is separated from the continent of Australia. It is an island-state.

Australians love their wildlife. The Australian government pays a lot of attention to the preservation of the environment. In the past many trees had been cut down. The government plans that one billion new trees will have been planted. They have already planted 550 million trees.

16-years-old Rachel Pointer saw the advertisement for the Glastonbury pop festival. (1) ________ ________________________.

"My friends Sally and Jacky had been to the festival the year before. They said it was great and they really wanted to go again. (2) _______________________________. So I asked Mum to talk to him. Actually, I don't think that either of my parents were very happy about it but they changed their minds when I told them that my cousin Rob, who is 21, was going to go with us. Before I went, Mum had a chat with me about the sort of things that can happen at pop festivals and I told her not to worry.

Anyway, we all took the train to Glastonbury on Wednesday and I rang Dad from the station when we got there. He wanted me to ring every day but I said that it wasn't possible as there were too many people queuing for the phones. He wasn't very pleased about that so in the end I agreed to phone him again on Saturday.

We put up our tents in one of the fields. (3) _________________________________. There were food stalls everywhere. The music was great but, in fact, we didn't see very many bands. We sat around and talked a lot — after all you don't go to a pop festival just for the music. You go to meet people and have fun. I made about twenty new friends in the four days that I was there, including two really nice girls from Italy. (4) ___________________________________________.

Dad picked us up from the station when we got back on Sunday night. I think he had been quite worried about us but it wasn't dangerous at the festival. (5) ______________________________________. I'll definitely go again next year if my parents let me."

X. WHAT MAKES OUR CHILDREN LEAVE HOME?

About 20% of British teenagers leave home after the age of 16. Some of them are students. They get help from the government (grants) or their parents to study away from home but they go back home during their holidays, so they have not really left.

Most of the 20% leave home because they want to get work and experience of the world.   However, accommodation is a big problem. Sometimes young people share flats, but most young people have to live in bedsitters that are rooms you sleep and live in. Some bedsitters have washing and cooking facilities.

Sometimes, young people live in empty houses. This is called squatting. There are also hostels for the homeless. The main problems are loneliness, getting a job and being able to do the washing and cooking. In Britain, however, it is natural for children to leave home. 1. Read the text.

Monday June 1st

My father had a letter that made his face go white: he has been made redundant from his job! He will be on the dole! How can we live on the pittance that the government will give us? The dog will have to go! It costs thirty-five pence a day for dog food, I am a single-parent child whose father is on the dole! Social Security will be buying my shoes!

Wednesday September 9th

My father can easily spare a hundred pounds. His redundancy payment must have been huge, so why he is lying on his bed moaning (стонать, охать) I don’t know. He is just a mean skinflint! He hasn’t paid with real money anyway! He used his American Express card.

Wednesday March 3d

I had to lend my father enough money for a gallon of petrol, he had an interview for a job. My mother cut his hair and gave him a shave and told him what to say and how to behave. It is pathetic to see how unemployment has reduced my father to childish dependence on others. He is waiting to hear from Manpower Services.

     Friday March 5th

He got it! He starts on Monday… He is in charge of a gang of school-leavers. To celebrate he bought my mother sixty Benson and Hedges and himself sixty Prayer’s. I got a family pack of Mars bars.

Everybody is dead happy for once. Even the dog has cheered up a bit. Grandma is knitting my father a woolly hat for work.

The day after Ted Turner announced his billion-dollar gift, Irene Scott walked into a doctor’s office in San Francisco. She is an 83-year-old black woman who started going to Dr. James Hutchinson back in the 1950s when he was the first African-American doctor in the county. Now, she thought, it was time to “do the right thing” by him. Without a word, she handed him two envelopes. One was her payment for her last bill; the other contained a $1,000 check for a scholarship fund he had set up for local medical students. That contribution represented more than a month’s income for Scott; she gets $115 from her late husband’s pension and $736 from Social Security. She had been saving up to make the gift for four years.

Irene Scott and Ted Turner may not have much in common, but they are fellow members of a huge American club, the Philanthropists. We are the nation of givers. Last year we dipped into our pockets and pulled out no less than $150.7 billion, which we handed out to charitable causes. This is not the doing of gigantic foundations like Ford and Rockefeller: 80 percent of that money came from individuals. And it doesn’t just come from the rich: 70 percent of all American households contributed.

1. What was in the two envelopes which Irene Scott handed to Dr James Hutchinson?

a) her payment for the last bill

b) her payment for the last bill and a $1,000 check

XVI. LISTENING COMPREHENSION

I. Вы услышите информацию о том. Как работает факс. Выберите верные и ложные утверждения с помощью + и -.

A fax machine does seem to transfer pieces of paper, but it really transfers images (such as words) by telephone from one piece of paper to another.

To understand how it works, imagine that a page of writing is divided into thousands of tiny bits. When you put the page into a fax machine, the machine moves a tiny beam of light right across the page, line after line. Each line is much thinner than a line of words. For each tiny bit, the machine “reads” a bit of reflected light as either a white space or a black space. Then the fax machine sends a signal for black or white over the phone for each tiny bit.

The fax machine receiving the message prints out all those tiny bits, using ink for each black signal and leaving a blank for each white signal. Then what you see in the fax copy is the result of all those bits that go together to make a page that looks like the original one.

1. A fax machine sends the original sheet of paper.

2. The piece of paper is put inside the machine in small pieces.

3. The fax machine sends signals to another fax machine over the phone.

4. The machine scans the page with ink.

      2.  I like listening to my stereo very much. Music is important to me. I just have to listen to it wherever I am — in my car, in my house — everywhere! It brings me in a good mood. Take away my stereo and I’d be totally lost.

XVII. READING COMPREHENSION

I. Прочитайте текст о термометре и выберите верные и ложные утверждения знаками + и -

Thermometer

The thermometer was invented by Galileo Galilei in 1593. His thermometer consisted of water in a glass bulb; the water moved up and down the bulb as the temperature changed.

The sealed thermometer was invented in 1641 by the Grand Duke Ferdinand II. He used a glass tube containing alcohol, which freezes well below the freezing point of water (alcohol freezes at -175ºF=-115ºC). He sealed the tube to exclude the influence of air pressure.

Mercury was later substituted for the alcohol, and then Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686-1736), a German physicist, used mercury plus a chemical solution that kept the mercury from sticking to the tube of the thermometer (in 17140; on his scale, the temperature of boiling water is 212 ºF and the freezing point of water is 32 ºF.

Anders Celsius, a Swedish astronomer, invented the Celsius (or Centigrade) scale in 1742, putting the freezing point at 100 º.

Lord Kelvin (William Thompson, 1824-1907) designed the Kelvin scale, in which 0 K is defined as absolute zero and the size of one degree is the same as the size of one degree Celsius. Water freezes at 273.16 K; water boils at 373.16 K.
