Слайд 2

James Cook is a naval sailor, explorer, traveler, cartographer. He was at the head of three round-the-world expeditions that carried out research of the World Ocean. Childhood James Cook was born in the English village of Marton on October 27, 1728. According to preserved historical information, this happened in the family of a Scottish farmhand. At the time of his birth, his parents were raising four children. At the age of eight, the boy and his parents moved to the village of Great Ayton, and began attending school. Currently, his museum is open there. James studied at school for only five years. Then he began his career on a farm where his dad was the manager. As an eighteen-year-old boy, Cook joined the ship "Hercules" as a cabin boy. Thus began the naval career of the future great traveler and cartographer.

Слайд 3

Three round-the-world trips. Cook led three trips around the world, which played a big role in the idea of the structure of the world . The first lasted for three years, according to the official version, its purpose was to study the phenomenon of how Venus passes through the Sun. But in fact, James was guided by secret orders that ordered the traveler to look for the location of the Southern Mainland. It is not known what specific goal was set for Cook in the second expedition. The team was exploring the southern seas, and it was the persistent initiative of James himself, who could not calm down, and continued to search for the Southern mainland. It is possible that this initiative did not come only from him . The third expedition was supposed to find the Northwest Waterway, but the team did not cope with this task. But they managed to discover Christmas Island and Hawaii

Слайд 4

Personal life . In 1762, James returned to England, and in the same year led Elizabeth Butts down the aisle. The personal life of the famous traveler turned out fine. His wife gave him six children. The first boy was born, who, like his father, was named James. He lived the longest of all Cook's children. He died at the age of 31. Two children died before the seventeenth birthday. One died at the age of four, and two died in infancy. These deaths greatly affected Elizabeth, although she lived a long enough life. The woman died at 93, having outlived her beloved spouse by 56 years

Слайд 5

Death . On January 16, 1779, James Cook reached the shores of Hawaii. The inhabitants surrounded the ships, and Cook counted several thousand natives who saw him as a God.The situation continued to escalate, and the crew was forced to leave the bay. However, a storm began, and the ships were seriously damaged. On February 10, the sailors had to return, but by that time the Hawaiians saw them as enemies. Cook and four sailors were captured by Hawaiians and eaten on February 14, 1779.

Слайд 6

Memory . Many objects have been named in honor of the great traveler and cartographer, monuments have been erected to him in various cities. The Strait that divides New Zealand and was discovered by Cook in 1769 bears his name. One of the Pacific archipelagos was also named after James Cook. The module of the spacecraft is named "Eagle" — that was the name of the first ship of the traveler. On August 10, 1932, a monument to Cook was unveiled in the town of Christchurch.
