Elizabeth of Russia
Elizabeth Petrovna was the Empress of Russia from 1741 until her death in 1762. Elizabeth was born in Kolomenskoye, near Moscow, on 18 December 1709. She was the daughter of Peter the Great, Tsar of Russia, and his second wife, Catherine I. Of the twelve children of Peter a d Catherine (five sons and seven daughters) only two daughters, Anna (b. 1708) and Elizabeth (b. 1709), lived long enough to become adults.
Elizabeth was the favourite child of her father. She was a bright girl, but her education was not good. Peter I did not think that his daughter could become Empress because he had an elder son. Elizabeth had a French governess and could speak Italian, German and French. She was also an excellent dancer and rider. Elizabeth was physically active and loved riding, hunting, sledging, skating, and gardening.
In 1720s Elizabeth’s parents died. Her fiancé, Peter II, died, too. Her cousin Anna became the Empress of Russia. Anna did not like Elizabeth and they were not friends. She did not want Elizabeth to play any political role. But after Anna died, Elizabeth asked the Army for help and became the new Empress.
Elizabeth did many important things. With Mikhail Lomonosov she founded the University of Moscow. With Ivan Shuvalov she founded the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. She was not cruel, and she never allowed to execute (kill) any criminals.

Dear _____,
I have some news! I am in a new school. My new school is very large and old. A lot of famous people went to my school.
We study English, Maths, History, Sports and Art, and we also learn a lot of languages: Russian, German and French. I think the languages are very interesting.
After classes we all go to school clubs. You can play football, tennis, go to the swimming pool. There are a lot of clubs. Then we do homework.
I come to school at 8 o’clock in the morning and come back home at 5 o’clock in the evening.
I’d like to know more about your school. (1) Is it old? (2) What subjects do you like? (3) Do you have any clubs at school? (4) Where do you do your homework? (5) At what time do you come to school and (6) when do you come back home?
Well, it’s 9 pm and I must finish now.
Best wishes,
Ben

The Story of the Boy Who Sang in the Streets
This house stands in the town of Eisenach in Germany. It looks very much the same today as it did when Sebastian was a little boy. Many people go there to visit this house because the little boy grew up to be a famous man. In Eisenach there is a statue of Bach near the palace. In the same town in which Sebastian was born there stands on the top of a hill a very famous castle built many thousands of years ago. This castle is called the Wartburg.
As a boy little Sebastian used to climb the hill with his friends, and they, no doubt, had a happy time playing about the castle grounds. In one of its great halls minstrels of Germany held their Song Contests. When Sebastian was old enough he used to travel afoot, just as the minstrels did; his purpose was to go to hear fine organ players. Once as he sat weary by the roadside someone threw a herring to him so that he might eat as he rested.
When Sebastian was ten years old, his father and mother died. So he went to live with his brother, whose home was a few miles away. Of this brother Sebastian had music lessons, and he improved so rapidly that he used to beg to be allowed to play the pieces in a big book in the library. But his brother refused him this pleasure. However, little Sebastian was eager to learn all the music he could find, so he used to sit up on moonlight nights and copy these pages while his brother was asleep.
Sebastian Bach had a very large family, twenty children altogether. Two of them studied music faithfully with their father. One was Friedemann, for whom the father wrote a book called Little Preludes. Friedemann’s brother, Philipp Emanuel Bach, was a very fine clavichord player. He wrote a book about music and composed many pieces.

- His parents died when he was ten years old.
- He went to live with his uncle.
- He used to walk long distances to hear famous organists.
- For his little son, Friedemann, he wrote a song of Little Preludes.

Surfing
Surfing is unusual and difficult, it’s more an art than a sport. It’s not one of the sports where you meet your friends or you may depend on their help. In surfing you are absolutely on your own with something very fast and complicated.
A great number of people don’t understand this sport. For them surfing is climbing a board and riding a wave into the beach. In fact, one fights with a wave and controls it. You should be able to turn at a proper angle, to slow down, etc. It is important to move around the board, to use your body weight to make the board work for you. All the time you should face the wave thinking over what you are going to do next.
Speed is the most exciting thing in surfing. In the fastest part of the wave the board moves at nearly 45 kilometres an hour.
Nowadays surfboards are light and made of modern materials. They are different from old long, narrow and heavy boards of the past when Captain Cook first saw them in Hawaii in 1778l

Five Great Hobbies for Teens
Hobbies are an important part of a teenager’s life. They help teenagers learn a lot about so many things. Depending on the hobby, a teen can become more familiar with history, social sciences, and varying cultures. The importance of a hobby can be demonstrated in the statistics that show teens with a great hobby are less likely to get into trouble than teens who don’t have such a passionate pursuit in their lives. Writing, collecting, building, music and photography are often regarded as hobbies that will challenge, educate and motivate teens all year round.
Collecting is a great hobby since it can involve collecting just about anything that appeals to the teen. While stamps and coins may not be exciting enough for today’s teens, postcards, bookmarks, even posters or T-shirts can be great ideas for collecting. Many teenagers enjoy collecting items that relate to places they have visited. Collecting gives teens a sense of purpose and a focus for their energies.
Writing stories or poems can be a great hobby for teens, too. Often teens need a channel for expressing themselves without the fear of judgement. Writing a diary or secret notebook helps teenagers gain a sense of privacy. And this is important for their development. Writing also increases the language skills of teens, which will help them better communicate later in life. Writing is also a very inexpensive hobby to have.
By building we understand wood working, metalworking or anything else that refers to working with your hands and results in a finished product. Whether it is airplane models or birdhouses, most teenagers can find something interesting and enjoyable to build. Building helps teens learn to concentrate. It is good for our young people to learn how to make their own goods.
What a kid hasn’t at one time or another dreamed of being a music star? Music is very important in the life of a young. It promotes creativity, self-expression, and self-confidence. Although music as a hobby can end up costing a lot of money, there are stores that offer used instruments and equipment. Renting an instrument is a good place to start out too.
In this day and age, photography can mean anything from taking pictures and self-developing them to taking digital photographs which are then “touched-up” with Photoshop.
With the invention of digital cameras, taking up photography as a hobby has never been easier or less expensive. But as teens become more interested, more advanced equipment can be added. Obviously there are many more hobbies that may appeal to teens. The trick is to let them figure it out through trial and error. But hobbies certainly may help make great teens turn out to be even greater adults.
- Hobbies are important for teens as …
- all of them develop creativity.
- they can demonstrate the young’s success in life.

- Writing seems an excellent hobby for teens as …
- they can express all their adolescent fears on paper.
- they can write whatever they want and not be frightened of criticism.
- most of them love to play games with a hint of secrecy.
- they will develop profound abilities as future orators.
- The word ‘building’ in the article is a term that is used to denote…
