The Birth of the Penny Bazaar

From the open market in Leeds, Michael Marks moved to its covered market hall, which had the advantage of giving protection against the weather and of being open for trading throughout the week. Here he soon introduced an innovation which was to be of fundamental importance to the development of his business. He divided his stall into two sections, and placed all those items costing a penny in one section and all those costing more in the other, where the prices were individually marked. Above the penny section hung a board with the words: ‘Don’t ask the price. It’s a penny.’

This proved to be one of the most successful advertising slogans ever invented. It was not only striking and simple and easily understood; it also answered a genuine popular need.  Michael

Marks’s customers came from the working-class, then largely illiterate, and were keen to satisfy their domestic needs at a low price; the combination of open display, easy inspection, and a fixed price made shopping easy and convenient for them. ‘Don’t Ask the Price’ It’s a Penny’ quickly proved so popular that Michael Marks adopted the principle of the fixed price on all his stalls and from that moment on sold nothing that cost more than a penny.

The success of this new way of selling was extremely important for the development of the business. It proved not only to be convenient to the customer, it was also extremely convenient to the stall owner. Michael Marks never kept any accounts, and conducted his business operation by mental arithmetic; adopting a single fixed price of a penny made his calculations much simpler. This element of operational simplicity was to become a central feature of the business. It was, in fact, a revolution: Michael Marks had discovered and put into practice two simple ideas – self-selection and self-service – which were to become cardinal principles in selling in the second half of the twentieth century.

In shops at this time, which were often small and dark, it was still usual to keep goods in drawers under the counter or on shelves behind it. However, many people are shy of going into shops; sometimes they even avoid it, in case they show their ignorance, or for fear that shopkeepers, or shop assistants, might look down on them or exploit them. This didn’t happen when people came to shop with Michael Marks. They could walk around Michael’s penny bazaar without being pushed to buy. They were at ease.

The adoption of fixed prices had also another far-reaching effect. It meant that Michael Marks had to search for as wide a variety of goods as possible, and of as high a quality as possible, that could be sold for a penny; as a result he had to accept that the profit on each item would be low, and make up for this by selling as many items as possible.

Robbie's Grandfather

My grandfather lives in the North of England. He is nearly 60, but he is strong and he still works. He is a maths teacher. My grandfather is very kind and his pupils like him a lot. They say he is an excellent teacher and they are never tired in his class. He never forgets anything and explains his subject very well. He always speaks in a friendly voice and so they enjoy his lessons.

My grandad lives in the country and every morning, five days a week, gets the bus to school. He doesn't have to change as the bus takes him right to the school. It's a through bus. He gets off the bus at half past 8 or there about.

My grandad likes to do many things, but he likes travelling most of all. He often goes to different cities (perhaps once or twice a month) and sometimes he goes to other countries too. He travels by sea, by train or flies. He likes voyages very much and often takes pictures on board the ship. He likes the sea and the wind.

Last month he travelled to Scotland. It was not a lucky trip. He nearly missed his train because he arrived late at the railway station. On the train somebody stole his favourite silver box in which he kept his tobacco. There was no bus or taxi to take him to the hotel where he wanted to stay and so he had to go on foot. When he arrived at the hotel he was tired and went upstairs. However his luggage was not there. So grandad went downstairs again, but couldn't find it. When he did, it was midnight and the lift did not work. So he was very unhappy that night and slept badly.

However in the morning the sun began to shine again and life seemed brighter.

"There is nothing like travelling," my grandad says. "You'll always enjoy it. Only look on the bright side."

3. How does he get to school?

4. What is his hobby?

5. Where did he travel last month?

6. What happened on the train?

When Louise Roberts was eighteen, she began to feel pain in her joints. Within six months, she was in so much pain that it was like walking on glass. Just pulling up a zip brought tears to her eyes. The worst thing was that she was too weak to play the violin. She had been playing since the age of seven and had planned to become a professional. Louise's doctor told her she had arthritis, a condition which makes the joints become painful. Louise was forced to give up playing the violin to avoid damaging her joints, and given pain killer drugs, which she still takes.

A year after the diagnosis, she went to university to do teacher training. It was upsetting for Louise to listen to other students practicing their instruments, knowing she could not play her beloved violin. She begged her mother to sell it, but her mother would not.

Teacher training was tough. Standing for long periods made her knees and feet ache, especially in cold weather. There were times when she felt she couldn't cope with it. Nevertheless she has now got a job in a primary school teaching a class of five year olds. She also plays the piano in school hall. Her fingers are still stiff at that hour of the morning, and she misses lots of notes but the children don't seem to mind.

After four years away from her violin Louise has just started teaching a ten-year-old boy to play. Before the arthritis started, she used to play in a symphony orchestra, and «he still dreams that one day she will perform on stage again.

Louise's condition has improved, partly because of the drugs, but also because, since visiting an allergy clinic, she has changed her diet completely. She has cut out all wheat, dairy products, beef and pork. Even so, her energy is limited and there are times when she is so tired that she has to stay in bed all weekend. She envies healthy people sometimes.

On the plus side however, she is more determined than most to get the best from life. She's also been taking singing lessons, as arthritis doesn't affect the voice, and as a result has achieved a higher standard in singing

Johnny was three when he ran away from home for the first time-Somebody left the garden gate open. Johnny left the place, crossed some fields, and two hours later, arrived in the next village. He was just able to give his name and address.

By the time he was seven, Johnny used to vanish from home two to three times a year. Sometimes he covered quite long distances on foot. On other occasions he got on a bus or even a train, and simply sat there until someone asked for his ticket. Generally the police brought him home. "Why do you do it?" they used to ask. "You aren't unhappy at home, are you?" "Of course not," Johnny replied. 'Then why?" "I just like seeing places," Johnny told them.

Johnny continued to "see places" although everyone tried to stop him. His parents used to watch him closely, and so did his teachers: but sooner or later Johnny managed to slip away. As he grew older, his favourite trick was to hide on a long distance lorry. Sometimes he used to travel hundreds of miles before anyone discovered him.

It is hardly surprising that one day Johnny managed to get on board a plane. He was twelve at the time. It was a cargo plane and, a few hours later, Johnny found himself in Cairo. How did he get on board? No one knows! According to Johnny himself, it was easy: he just went into the airport, walked along some corridors and got on board the nearest plane.

In spite of all this, Johnny did well at school. He enjoyed maths and languages and, perhaps not surprisingly, he was especially good at geography, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" his teachers asked him. Johnny did not take long to answer that question. "An explorer!" he answered. "But it's difficult to become an explorer in this modern age," they tried to tell him, "unless you go into space!" But it was no use: Johnny knew what he wanted!

Just before he left school, Johnny saw a notice in one of the daily papers. An expedition was about to go to Brazil to travel up the Amazon. There were vacancies for three young people "willing to work hard and with a sense of adventure." Johnny applied and, two months later, he was.on his way to Brazil

Mr. Jenkins had a sports car, which he liked driving very fast. The problem was that there were speed limits on all the roads, but when he thought he could let the car go without being caught by the police, he did so. Mrs. Jenkins did not enjoy it when her husband drove, very fast, especially as Mr. Jenkins had had several accidents in his last car, in one of which Mrs. Jenkins had had an arm broken. Mr. Jenkins had also twice been caught speeding on a motorway, and he had had to go to court and pay a fine each time. "Unless you're more careful", his wife said, "you'll lose your license."

One evening Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins were invited to a party at the house of some new friends. It was about forty kilometers from the Jenkins' home, and when Mr. Jenkins looked on the map, he saw that there, was a good main road most of the way but not a motorway. “That's good,” he thought “I can do it in 20 minutes if there are no police about.” They started out, and Mr. Seldom drove along at his usual high speed, watching out for police cars in his mirror from time to time to make sure he was safe.

They reached their friends' house without any trouble and had a good time at the party. Then at half-past ten, after dark, they began me return journey. Again Mr. Jenkins drove very fast through the night, although it was raining. "You'll have another accident unless you slow down”, his wife warned him, but he did not listen. Suddenly he heard a police siren just behind him, and the car following him turned on a blue light.

Mr. Jenkins stopped at once and got out of his car angrily. "Now look here, officer" Mr. Jenkins began at once, "I've been keeping carefully just under seventy kilometers an hour. I'm sure of that because I've been looking at my speedometer every few seconds for the past twenty minutes."

Is that so, sir?" the policeman said, taking a book out of his pocket. “Well, we didn't stop you for that. We stopped you to tell you that one of your rear lights isn't working. A GREAT CHARACTER

О

Life is not always easy. Sometimes it presents serious problems that make people sad and cause despair. At such times it might be good to think about the example of Helen Keller, born in America in -1880. She never gave in.

1

There was nothing wrong with Helen when she was born. Her parents were very proud of their pretty baby. She was able to walk when she was one and could even say a few words. But one day she 'refused to eat and started crying. She had a high temperature and they had to call the doctor. When she recovered, it was clear that little Helen would never again be able to see or hear. Before Helen Keller was even two she was blind and deaf.

2Her parents were very upset and at first decided to let her grow up untaught. But soon they understood chat their pity could not help her, but could do her a lot of harm. They did their best to find a good teacher from the Institution for the Blind in Boston. It was a wonderful day for Helen Keller when Ann Sullivan came to their place. Ann by great effort and patience taught Helen the meaning of words.

3When Ann arrived she was only 20 and Helen - 7. From the first day they became good friends. Helen turned out a very capable pupil: she quickly learned to communicate through sign language and later was good at reading, writing and typing in Braille. For fifty years they were good companions till 1936, when Ann died. It was due to the patience and skill of Ann Sullivan that Helen Keller developed into one of the most remarkable women of our time.

4Miss Sullivan loved her pupil who was so quick to learn. She lived with Helen, played with her, and worked with her every hour of the day. By means of the hand language, Helen and her teacher were able to talk to each other. By this time she was also able to go on a vacation trip, to swim, to

ride a pony, and to do many of the  other things that any other child might do.

5

Helen was determined that she would learn to speak, At first she had difficulty with  her speech, but Anne Sullivan understood what she was trying to say. Helen practiced speaking day after day until at last she developed a clear voice. Later she was able to speak before large crowds which came to hear her whenever she lectured.

6

When Helen Keller completed formal schooling she went on to college. She graduated from Radclifi with honours. One of Helen Keller's professors was so pleased with the things that she wrote for her English classes that he suggested she write the story of her life. Helen did write "The Story of My Life" while she was in college. It was such a cheerful account of how this young girl was able to live a happy, useful life in spite of terrible difficulties. In her writings and lectures Helen Keller did everything possible to help and encourage those who were blind.

SURFING THE NET

What is more impressive than the pyramids, more beautiful than Michelangelo's David and more important to mankind than the wondrous inventions of the Industrial Revolution? To the converted, there can be only one answer : the Internet that undisciplined radical electronic communications network that is shaping our universe.

The industrial age has matured into the information age; wherein the means to access, manipulate, and use information has become crucial to success and power. The electronic superhighway provides an entry to libraries, research institutions, databases, art galleries, etc. For those of us interested in intercultural communications Cyberspace is a universal community, with instant access not only to information anywhere, but also to friends old and new around the globe. Multimedia, the electronic publishing revolution, is entering every area of our lives — college, work and home. This new digital technology combines texts, video, sound and graphics to produce interactive language learning, football, music, movies, cookery and anything else you might be interested in.

The Internet is an amorphous global network of thousands of linked computers that pass information back and forth. While the Internet has no government, no owners, no time, no place, no country, it definitely has a culture, which frequently approaches anarchy; and it has a language, which is more or less English. People who interact in an Internet environment know how addresses are formed, how to use e-mail, Usenet News, Telnet, and other software tools. There are words to describe people who roam the net: netters, e-suffers, internet surfers, netiyns, spiders, geeks...

Large-scale use of computer-to-computer transfer of information was implemented by the US military in the late 60s and early 70s — part of the superpower competition of the cold war and the arms race. The US military created an electronic network (Arpanet) to use computers for handling the transfer of large amounts of sensitive data over long distances at incredible speed. Computer-to-computer virtual connections, using satellites and fiber optics, have distinct advantages over telephone or radio communications in the event of a nuclear attack. Mathematicians and scientists (and their universities) have been linked and electronically exchanging information over the Internet since the mid-70s.

Now the Internet has become commercialized with private and public companies offering access to it. If you have a computer or a computer terminal, some kind of connection (probably, modem and telephone line) to the Internet, and some kind of Internet service provider, you can participate in electronic communication and become a citizen of the global village.
