Great Britain

The official name of the country is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It consists of four parts: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

London is the capital of  England, Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, Cardiff— of Wales and Belfast — of Northern Ireland. The UK is a small country and it is washed by the Atlantic Ocean, the Irish Sea and the North Sea. The English Channel separates Great Britain from France.

The climate of Great Britain is oceanic and the weather is very changeable. It is not very cold in winter and not very hot in summer.

Great Britain has a lot of rivers and lakes. The most important river is the Thames in London. The longest river is the Severn. The Lake District is the most beautiful region on the British islands. The most famous lake is the Loch Ness. There is a legend that Nessie, the Loch Ness monster, lives in it.

There are plenty of mountains and hills in Scotland. The highest mountain is Ben Nevis.

The flag of the United Kingdom is called the Union Jack. It has three crosses on the dark blue background.

The population of the United Kingdom is over 57 million people. About seven million people live in London. Great Britain is famous for its great poets and writers such as William Shakespeare, Walter Scott, Arthur Conan Doyle and others. The Beatles rock group was born in Liverpool.

The official language of the United Kingdom is English. But in northern and central parts of Wales people often speak Welsh.

Great Britain is an amazing country. I would love to go there one day.
