Глагол be в настоящем времени имеет 3 формы: am , are , is . В русском языке эти формы соответствуют форме глагола быть – есть , которая в большинстве случаев опускается. My friend is at home. Мой друг _ дома. She is a pupil. Она ученица. The pen is red. Ручка красная. Но английское предложение без глагола существовать не может. Глагол be называют глаголом-связкой , потому что никакого действия он не выражает, его задача – «связать» слова в предложение. Англичанин, который плохо говорит по-русски, сказал бы так: «Мой друг есть дома», «Она есть ученица», «Ручка есть красная» и т. п.

Помимо того, что вам необходимо следить за тем, чтобы в английском предложении был глагол, вы ещё должны помнить соответствующую форму глагола : I am / you, we, they are / he, she, it is . Обратите внимание на то, что не всегда следует переводить каждое слово : Мне пять лет. → I am five . Ему шесть лет. → He is six .

Чтобы сказать нет («Он не дома», «Ему не шесть лет» ), нужно сразу после глагола-связки употребить слово not : I am not (= I ’m not ) six . – Мне не шесть лет. She is not (= She is n’t ) a pupil. – Она не ученица. It is not (= It is n’t ) a frog. – Это не лягушка. We are not (= We are n’t ) at school. – Мы не в школе. You are not (= You are n’t ) at home. – Вы не дома. They are not (= They are n’t ) in London. – Они не в Лондоне.

Чтобы утвердительное предложение превратить в вопросительное, нужно глагол поставить на 1-ое место : He is a pupil. Is he a pupil? Вопросы, на которые можно ответить Да или Нет , называются общими . В английском языке они всегда начинаются с глагола : Am I at home? Is he / she / it at home? Are we / you / they at home?

Глагол have переводится на русский язык У меня (у тебя и т.д.) есть . Вы привыкли к тому, что I – это Я и сначала вам может быть не понятно, почему предложение У меня что-то есть нужно на английский язык переводить, начиная со слова I . Часто, чтобы избежать подобных трудностей, переводят этот глагол словом иметь , тогда всё кажется очень простым: Я имею … → I have got … . Обратите внимание на то, что I have got → У меня есть… You have got → У тебя есть… He has got → У него есть… и т.д.

Обратите внимание на то, что, когда в предложении стоит he / she / it , употребляется форма has . Для того, чтобы сказать, что у кого-то чего-то нет (У него нет собаки) , нужно после глагола have ( has) поставить частицу not . I have not got (= have n’t got) a dog. – У меня нет собаки. She has not got (= has n’t got) a friend. – У неё нет друга. We have not got(= have n’t got) a cat. – У нас нет кошки. They have not got(= have n’t got) a bike. – У них нет велосипеда.

Чтобы задать вопрос, нужно глагол have (has) , который в утвердительном предложении стоит на втором месте, вынести вперёд и поставить перед подлежащим. (Вы помните, что общие вопросы начинаются с глагола.) He has got a dog. Has he got a dog? Have you got a cat? – У вас есть кошка? Has she got a friend? – У неё есть друг? Has he got a pen? – У него есть ручка? Have they got a box? – У них есть коробка?

Притяжательный падеж существительного Система английских падежей гораздо проще, чем система русских. В русском 6 падежей (именительный, родительный, дательный, винительный, творительный, предложный). А английские существительные имеют только 2 падежа (!) . Один падеж, он называется общий , вы уже давно знаете. Это существительное в той форме, в какой оно даётся в словаре. Другой падеж называется притяжательным . Он показывает, кому принадлежит та или иная вещь . Существительное в единственном числе образует притяжательный падеж при помощи апострофа и окончания - s : the boy ’s dog – собака мальчика the girl ’s cat – кошка девочки.

Глагол can в утвердительных предложениях Глагол can переводится на русский язык уметь / мочь . После can нельзя употреблять частицу to . Сравните: They like to play. – Они любят играть. They can _ play. – Они умеют играть. Чтобы задать вопрос, нужно глагол can (как и глаголы be и have ) вынести вперёд и поставить перед подлежащим: Can I take the box? Can you help me? Can Mary swim? Can Mike play tennis? Для того, чтобы сказать, что кого-то чего-то не умеет, нужно после глагола can поставить отрицательную частицу not . Полная форма cannot (= can’t) всегда пишется слитно. I cannot take the box. Dick cannot go to school. My friend can’t skate.

Краткие ответы В английском языке краткий ответ из одного слова Да ( Yes) и Нет ( No) возможен, но звучит не очень вежливо. Краткий утвердительный ответ в английском языке состоит из слова Yes, местоимения и соответствующего глагола: Yes, + личное местоимение + глагол После Yes ставится запятая. Is it a cat? – Yes, it is . Are they pupils? – Yes, they are . Have you got a dog? – Yes, I have . Has he got a cat? – Yes, he has . Can Ann swim? – Yes, she can . Следует помнить, что в конце краткого ответа стоит глагол, с которого начинается общий вопрос.

Краткий отрицательный ответ в английском языке состоит из слова No, местоимения и соответствующего глагола c отрицательной частицей not . No, + личное местоимение + глагол + not После No ставится запятая. Is it a cat? – No, it is not. Are they pupils? – No, they are not. Have you got a dog? – No, I have not (=No, I have n’t ) . Has he got a cat? – No, he has not (= No, he has n’t ) . Can Ann swim? – No, she can not (=No , she can not = No, she can’t ). .

Множественное число существительных 1. Существительное во множественном числе имеет окончание – s : a cat ( a cat + s ) → cat s 2. Если существительное в единственном числе оканчивается на – х , то во множественном числе оно имеет окончание - es : a bo x → bo x es Обратите внимание! Перед существительными во множественном числе ставить артикль a нельзя : a dog s - собаки a girl s - девочки .

Litter is a problem in our cities

            Litter is garbage – like food, paper and cans – on the ground or in the street. Where many people live together, litter is a problem. People don’t always put their garbage in the bins. It’s easier to drop a paper than to find a bin for it. But litter is ugly. It makes the city look dirty, and it spoils the view.

        The wind blows papers far away. Often they are difficult to catch. When they blow against a fence, they stay there. This fence is a wall of garbage.

          Litter is a health problem, too. Food and garbage attract animals, which sometimes carry disease.

         Some people want to control litter. They never throw litter themselves, and sometimes they work together in groups to clean up the city. In most places litter is against the law. The law punishes people who throw garbage in the streets. They usually pay a fine, and occasionally they go to jail.

         Two famous sayings in the United States are: “Don’t be a litterbug!” and “Every litter bit hurts!”

A

People have always polluted the environment. But until now pollution was not such a serious problem. In past most people lived in uncrowded country areas and didn’t have machines polluting the nature.

But with the development of industrial cities the problem of pollution has become more important. Using automobiles and other machines made pollution steadily worse. Since the 1950s people have become alarmed with the danger of environmental pollution.

Air, water, and ground are necessary for all living beings and animals. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil (почва), food products can’t be grown. In addition environmental pollution destroys the natural beauty of our planet.

Pollution is a very serious problem. Cars are polluting the air but they provide fast transportation for the people. Plants and factories pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce goods. Pesticides are important for growing crops but they pollute soil.

Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end pollution immediately. Most people don’t agree to do that. But pollution can be reduced gradually. Scientists and engineers can find the ways to reduce pollution from cars and factories. Government can pass the antipollution laws that would make factories take measures for reducing of pollution. Groups of people can work together to stop polluting the environment.

С 50-х годов прошлого столетия люди стали ощущать тревогу в связи с опасностью загрязнения окружающей среды.

Воздух, вода и почва необходимы для существования всех живых существ. Но загрязненный воздух может стать причиной болезни и даже смерти. Загрязненная вода приводит к гибели рыб и других существ, обитающих в море. На загрязненной почве нельзя выращивать пищевые продукты. Кроме того, загрязнение окружающей среды портит естественную красоту нашей планеты.

Загрязнение — это очень сложная и серьезная проблема. Автомобили загрязняют воздух, но они служат для быстрого перемещения людей. Заводы и фабрики загрязняют воздух и воду, но они обеспечивают рабочие места для людей и позволяют производить необходимые товары. Удобрения и пестициды необходимы для выращивания сельскохозяйственных культур, но они загрязняют почву.

Поэтому людям пришлось бы перестать использовать многие полезные вещи, если бы они захотели немедленно прекратить загрязнение окружающей среды. Однако большинство людей не согласятся на это. Но загрязнение можно уменьшить постепенно. Ученые и инженеры могут найти способы уменьшить загрязнение от автомобилей, заводов и фабрик. Правительство может издать законы, которые бы заставили предприятия принять меры по уменьшению загрязнения. Отдельные люди и группы людей могут сотрудничать в деле охраны окружающей среды.

Gary Cole

Save the chimps!
Like human children, chimpanzee babies are very attached to their mums – but  many of them lose their parents when they are very young.  In West and Central Africa, mothers of young chimps are among the animals killed by poachers for meat. The poachers then sell the poor orphan babies for experiments or to circuses, or as exotic pets.

 Fortunately, many of these young chimps have now got a loving home at the new Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Kenya.

  At Sweetwaters the young chimpanzees can have a normal life, looking for food, making friends and learning how to explore and climb. Most are doing well. There is an organization “Care for the Wild “ that helps pay for the chimps to stay at the Sanctuary and they find and rescue injured chimps.  We really need an intensive care unit. Then we can help more animals.

When I was as old as my daughter is now, my parents were not happy with my behaviour. I argued with them, ignored their orders and didn’t appreciate their care. Now I see how wrong I was; they wished me only good. Now I have a teenage daughter myself. I think that the main thing with teenagers is not to over control their lives and not to take care of them too much. It sounds strange, doesn’t it? But I mean that parents shouldn’t check if their children’s schoolbags have been packed or their school uniforms are clean and tidy. I never tell my daughter Sarah that she shouldn’t drop her school blazer in the corridor and or that she should go to bed on time. I accept that she can plan her day and can keep her school uniform wherever she likes: on the floor or under the bed or in her own schoolbag. But she should look tidy at school and shouldn’t make a fuss in the morning if she is late and her dress doesn’t look right.
        I don’t support the idea of prohibiting something without a good reason.
Last month Sarah declared that she was grown up enough to arrange home parties for her friends. I didn’t object to it but explained to Sarah that her responsibility was not only to make up the list of the guests but to manage the whole event: to arrange the time that fits the plans of the family, to think about snacks and drinks beforehand, to make up a scenario for the party and to find time to tidy up the flat before and after the party. I asked her to make up a kind of a business plan for the event and if everything was OK, there was really no reason to prohibit it, was there?
        Sarah put off the party several times. She did it, not because I didn’t let her invite the friends, but because she, herself, couldn’t prepare everything on time. She acted like a grown-up, not a naughty demanding child.
        I’m sure that my tactic works with my daughter. She understands now why I don’t allow her certain things. She sees the reason behind it instead of as a parent’s wish to treat her as a child. She often asks for my advice and appreciates it when I give it to her. In her turn, she tries to support me in difficult situations. She understands that it’s not easy to be adult and independent and to manage life as best you can.

IS INSURANCE NECESSARY FOR A TRAVELLER?

1.        Agencies provide you with different insurances: you can get a life insurance and accident insurance, car insurance and boat insurance, homeowners insurance and travel insurance, and lots of other kinds of insurance policies. Why do people buy insurance policies? For example, why do they buy travel insurance when they go abroad?

2.        This is what Adam Brown, the owner of the insurance agency "Safe Travel" says: "When we travel, we can face some unexpected risks. First of all, we can get ill or can have an accident while travelling. The risk is rather high, especially in exotic countries. There are exotic diseases, and snakes and mosquitoes inhabit the most beautiful islands. So, if you become ill or injured, your travel insurance will provide financial support. That is, the agency will pay for your treatment.

3.        Then your luggage can be lost while travelling, and, unfortunately, this happens a lot. Can you imagine your life in a foreign city without even the most essential clothes and personal things? If your luggage is lost or damaged, your travel insurance will financially cover at least some percentage of the property that has been lost. With that money you can buy everything necessary and your holiday won't be ruined.

4.        And last but not least, your luggage or money can be stolen. It's not a very good idea to wait till the police find it. It can take too much time. The agency will pay for the damage done and, then, let the police do their job while you are enjoying your holiday."

Dear Editor,

We represent the Young Journalists Club and we would be happy to publish some of our articles in your journal. The topics we study refer to teenagers' life. We run different surveys and questionnaires which help understand what teenagers are interested in, what they care for, and what they are indifferent to. Most of our research is on political and cultural issues, and we want to find out how competent contemporary teenagers are in those topics. We certainly don't ignore environmental issues and human rights problems and try to display a wide diversity of views and opinions.

Lately we've been studying the TV topic, i.e. (то есть) what teenagers watch on TV and what TV programmes they enjoy. Forty teenagers, aged 14-16, were interviewed, and we got some curious results. Here are some of them.

About 35% of the interviewed said that they don't watch the news at all.  “I don't watch the news,” said Julia Smith, one of the typical representatives of that group, "they speak either about wars or terrorist attacks. If I watch it, I feel down and scared..., so... I don't watch it at all."

65% watch the news occasionally and randomly, and were not able to name any programme they trust. They confuse Presidents and Prime Ministers, and they are not sure about the regions of armed conflicts, and don't know what the word "summit" means. However, about half of our respondents mentioned that they would like to feel more confident about political issues, and that it would be useful to have some classes on political literacy (грамотность) in the school curriculum (учебный план).

The survey revealed some unexpected things. For example, most teenagers are not really keen on thrillers and action films. They say that they prefer point-and-shoot computer games to action films.

As for TV, about 60% of our respondents claim that they would like to see more educational, cultural and popular science films on TV. Scientific breakthroughs, new technologies, mysteries of the past and the present, ancient civilisations are very welcome. These topics have always been a great attraction for teenagers of all generations.

In conclusion we would like to thank you for the time you gave to our letter. If you find our topics of some interest to your journal and your readers, we would be happy to present the full texts of our projects and articles, and discuss our possible cooperation.

Robots learn how to distinguish (различить) between good and evil, and how to become a friend to a human being. To our surprise and delight we find out that robots are able to experience feelings — they can feel happy, upset, and even angry. [1] They can even risk their life, [2], for someone they love.

Is artificial intellect a pure fantasy or are there any scientific discoveries behind this idea? [3] What we know for sure is that robotics is a rapidly developing technology, and soon we can expect robots to enter our houses and stay there for a long time. It’s already happening in Japan, where machines of all shapes and sizes are widely used. Besides being used in different industries, robots do lots of housework: they clean the house, serve tea and wash up after that. [4] These robots wake people up in the morning, inform them about the weather and ask questions about their health. The robots are able to recognise faces, keep eye contact and maintain conversations. In Japan, [5] humanoid robots have already become friends for lots of elderly people.

Robots for households are usually designed in a humanlike manner and resemble human beings — they have a head, arms and legs. Japanese scientists believe that in several years robots will be common in every household and feel very enthusiastic about it.
