The Matryoshka Doll's house

The Russian Matryoshka Museum is home to a collection of 400 Matryoshka dolls. These date from the 19th century up to the present day. The dolls are wooden with beautiful decorations. Some of them represent characters from Russian literature, fairy tales and politics. Most of the dolls have five to seven pieces, but some sets are really big and have fifty pieces. The biggest piece is one metre high and the smallest one is one centimetre high.

The History of the Matryoshka Doll

The Matryoshka doll came to Russia from Japan at the end of the 19th century. The first Matryoshka was a girl in a print dress, a white apron and a bright shawl, carrying a rooster under her arm. There were six other dolls inside her. The doll looked very Russian and soon became popular. The name Matryoshka came from the common Russian name Matryona. Today, Matryoshkas are made in many parts of Russia.

  1. READING

Read the text 'School in the Past and in the Future'. Then match the beginnings of the sentences (1–10) from the text with their endings (a–l). There are two extra endings.

School in the Past and in the Future

In Britain in the early and mid-nineteenth century, children didn't have to go to school at all. There were schools, of course, but you had to pay to go to them, and often parents couldn't afford the fees. Many people also believed that girls didn't need to go to school, as their future was to get married and have children. Although from 1870 the law said that all children aged 5 to 10 had to go to school, many poor families weren't able to pay. The children of these families needed to have a job in order to pay the fees, and school timetables were organised to make this possible. It wasn't until 1918 that children had to be at least 12 years old to work for a living.

Schools 100 years ago were certainly very different from those today. But what about the future? A national newspaper recently organised a competition for schools called The school I'd like. 'I'm concerned that the pressures of the national curriculum will mean that there won't be time for a project like this,' a reporter said. She needn't have worried, as there were over 15,000 entries full of ideas!

And what great ideas: a school in a giant submarine with waterproof maps of the underwater world, private helicopters to fly students to France for French lessons, and rockets to take children to distant planets to study the solar system. There are also some down-to-earth suggestions: clean toilets with locks that work so that students won't have to wait until they get home, no uniforms so that students will be able to choose what to wear, chill-out rooms to relax in, and enough computers so that students won't need to queue for them. Safety and comfort are clearly important: one student suggests an anti-bullying alarm, and another writes 'We don't want interactive whiteboards, we want comfortable chairs!'

1

In the nineteenth century parents often

A

won't all have to wear the same clothes

2

A hundred years ago many people thought that girls

B

were able to pay school fees.

3

In Britain until 1870 children

E

6

There were 15,000 entries for competition so the reporter

F

had to be twelve years old.

7

One idea is for schools to have rockets so that students

G

won't need to wait to use one.

8

Another idea is a school without uniforms where students

H

will need to study more and more subjects.

9

(T), False (F ) or Not Stated (NS). You will hear the text twice.

Now you have 30 seconds to read the questions.

(Пауза 30 сек)

Now we are ready to start.

The rise of Moscovy (as the principality was named) was made possible due to

several factors. First and foremost was its location in the area between the rivers at

the crossroads of Russia’s trade routes. Another factor was its prestige as a seat of the

Russian Orthodox Church, which became important after the fall of Constantinople in the 15th century. Moreover, during the 1350s, the Mongol-Tatar Golden Horde was weakened by numerous struggles for power within its vast empire. Meanwhile, the Kremlin was being strengthened.

In 1380, Dmitry led the Russian army to confront the Horde near the River Don. The battle of Kulikovo was the Russians’ first victory, and this historic event was commemorated by the foundation of the Donskoy Monastery on the site where Dmitry assumed the title of Donskoy. However, the Horde remained a serious threat.

In the years that followed, Russian icon painting reached its zenith. The names of the artists were Theopohanes the Greek, Andrei Rublyev and Daniil Cherniy, who worked in Moscow.

In 1453, the Byzantine capital Constantinople fell to the Turks.

You have 1 minute to fulfil the task. Then you will hear the text again.

ASSISTANTS TO THE STARS

It stands to reason that a city like Los Angeles, which is home to so many of the famous and the semi-famous, would have an Association of Celebrity Personal Assistants (ACPA). The organisation describes personal assistants as ‘multitasking’, as ‘possessing the most resourceful, creative, insightful, and results-driven abilities.’

When I first got in touch with Josef Csongei, the organisation’s president, he

was initially reluctant to talk to me because I was a journalist. As he sees it, celebrity personal assistants have not always been treated fairly by the press. But despite this,

and all the hard work and lack of appreciation that can come with this line of work, he explained, the jobs were still widely sought after. He noted that people regularly travelled great distances to attend a seminar titled ‘Becoming a Celebrity Personal Assistant’, run by the ACPA. To prove his point, he told me about Dean Johnson. In

the coming weeks, I heard this story from a number of assistants, including Johnson

himself, and every time it left me baffled.

The story begins one night in September 1994, with Dean Johnson sitting at home in Columbia, South Carolina. Johnson is a single, 32-year-old business executive in charge of marketing and advertising at a sizeable company in the healthcare industry. It is 11 pm and he’s looking to unwind in front of the television after a long day’s work. A repeat of a talk show appears on the screen, and the host introduces her four guests: the celebrity personal assistants for Whoopi Goldberg, Roseanne Barr, Burt Reynolds and Carol Burnett. As these assistants talk about flying on private jets and attending Hollywood parties, Johnson reaches for a pen and starts taking notes. Without wasting another minute, he picks up the phone, calls directory enquiries in Los Angeles, and asks for the home phone numbers of the four assistants on the show.

Only one of them is listed: Ron Holder, who works for Whoopi Goldberg. Johnson dials his number, and a minute later Holder picks up the phone. ‘He said I

was very lucky to get through,’ Johnson told me. ‘Apparently, in the three months since he had appeared on that talk show, he had received about 200 phone calls from people like me. He was in the process of disconnecting his phone, but he was nice enough to chat with me for a while.’ During their conversation, Holder told Johnson that he should consider attending the ‘Becoming a Celebrity Personal Assistant’ seminar in Los Angeles.

For someone like Johnson, with almost no connections in the industry, the notion of moving out to Los Angeles to become a celebrity personal assistant, something he did two months later, was extremely courageous - there’s no denying that. The typical American story of the guy in the remote provinces who falls in love with the glamour of the silver screen, packs up all his possessions and moves out to Hollywood to become a star is almost a century old. But Johnson’s story offered a new twist: he moved out to Hollywood to become an assistant to a star.

Of the thousands of people who work in Hollywood: agents, lawyers, stylists, publicists, business managers and others, many hope to rub shoulders with the biggest stars. What’s unique about celebrity personal assistants is that such proximity appears to be the only perk their profession offers. Most describe the bulk of their work as drudgery: doing laundry, fetching groceries, paying bills. Assistants typically make about $56,000 a year - hardly a fortune by Hollywood standards, especially given the round-the-clock obligations they often have. What’s more, the job is rarel a stepping stone to fame: celebrity personal assistants are, on average, aged about 38, right in the middle of their professional lives, and most of the ones I met described their line of work as a lifelong profession. For them, being an assistant was not the means to an end but an end in itself.

Listening comprehension

For items 1–10 listen to a man talking about the sport of elephant polo and decide whether th e statements 1–10 are TRUE according to the text you hear (A), or FALSE(B), or the information on the statement is NOT STATED in the text (C). You will hear the text twice. You have 20 seconds to look through the statements.

(pause 20 seconds)

Now we begin

Of course, polo is normally played on horses, and it’s a very fast game. Well, we don’t claim that elephant polo is the fastest game in the world, but we always maintain it’s the biggest. The elephants do actually enjoy polo. Definitely. It's a lot of fun for them because they’re social animals, and a polo tournament is a week when dozens of elephants meet up, many from the same family, like a reunion. And of course they get fed extremely well - better than in their normal life. They use up a lot of energy and get through masses of sugar cane, especially at half-time.

The players sit on elephants and hit a white wooden ball, using a long bamboo stick that has a polo mallet head on the end of it. The pitch is about three-quarters the length of a football pitch, and the goals are the same width as football goals. There’s a basic saddle and the players are strapped onto the elephants.

We've never had a serious accident. A mahout - an elephant handler - sits behind each player and guides the elephant. Sometimes the mahouts have their own games, guiding the elephant and hitting the ball as well. That takes incredible skill.

During a game, if the ball hits an elephant, that’s fine. Their legs are quite thick and they do get in the way. Quite often they will kick the ball so they can run after it. They’re not allowed to pick up the ball with their trunks, though they sometimes try. That would be a free hit to the other side.

There are four elephants per team in a tournament, plus the referee’s elephant - that’s nine on the pitch at any one time. We usually have sixteen animals available on any given day, in four teams. There are two halves, called chukkas, in a game of elephant polo, the same as in normal polo. We play ten minutes of actual play. Whenever the whistle blows, the clock stops. A novice team might score one or two goals, if they’re lucky, while an advanced team might score about ten.

The polo rules are that a man can only hold the stick with his right arm, even if he is left-handed. Women can use both hands. Using the stick is hard work, because it's long and the head is heavy. By the end of the game, your arm will be aching. But it’s an easy game to pick up with a little practice.

During the game, you chase after the ball on your elephant, going quite quickly, and you can easily miss it, though the elephant will often help you out with his foot. The elephants usually supply the entertainment. They might decide to lie down across the goal for fun but that’s an absolute no-no.

Ultimately it’s about elephants charging up and down the pitch, scoring great goals themselves and having a lot of fun. If the elephants didn’t enjoy it, or if there was any form of misbehaving, they would be removed from the game - sent off, if you like. It’s not worth risking an elephant with an attitude problem.

You get all sorts. You get big elephants that are a bit older and wiser, and we use a lot of small ones that can be exceptionally quick. We try to remove what you might call the elephant factor by swapping elephants and mahouts with the other team at halftime. If you’ve got elephants that don’t normally live together, there can be some tension. The sport always uses Indian elephants. The problem with African ones is that their ears get in the way. And they’re much taller.

You have 20 seconds to check your answers. (pause 20 seconds)

Now listen to the text again. (text repeated)

This is the end of the listening comprehension task.

Food from around the world

We eat a lot of different kinds of food today. Before the 16th century, people in Europe didn't have a lot of the things that we can eat and drink every day.

At the end of the 15th century, people from Europe started to travel to other parts of the world. They went to America, Africa and Asia.  They brought back a lot of new kinds of food.

Chocolate came from Mexico. The Aztecs there drank chocolate with pepper! The Spanish brought chocolate to Europe and they were first to put sugar in it. Until the 1870s, chocolate was only a drink. The Swiss made the first bar of chocolate in 1876.

Tomatoes, peppers and avocados all came from Mexico, too. The Spanish took seeds back to Spain and started to grow the plants there.  Soon they spread to other countries in Europe and then to other parts of the world. The words tomato, chocolate and avocado all come from the old Aztec language.

Potatoes came from South America. Potatoes like cold, wet weather. They grew in the mountains of Peru. Coffee came from Africa. The Turks took it to Turkey and then to Europe. Tea came from China in the 17th century. At first it was very expensive and only rich people drank it, but in the 19th century the British started to grow tea in India. They produced a lot, so it was cheap and everybody could drink it.

Task 1

You will hear Louise Bright telling some students about her work as a clothes designer. For each question 1–5, choose the correct letter A, B or C.

You now have 30 seconds to look at the questions.

(пауза 30 секунд)

Now we are ready to start. Listen carefully. You will hear the recording twice

 Louise:

I’ve worked as a sportswear designer for a big store for four years now, but I haven’t always worked in fashion. When I left school I worked as a secretary for a couple of years, and then became a bank clerk before getting a job in a travel agency. But I always dreamt about working in fashion, and I used to spend a lot of time staring out of the window and drawing clothes!

So, when I was 25, I went to college – the London School of Fashion, and did a four-year course there. You don’t learn how to actually design and make clothes until the second year – the first year is spent looking back at the fashions of the past. In the third year you work in a big store, looking at clothes made by all the famous fashion names.

I enjoyed the last year of the course most, because each student designs seven sets of clothes for the final fashion show. All the students at the school come to the final show, and you can invite other friends as well. But for me, the best thing was that my Mum and Dad could come and see what I’d done. Of course, people who are really well-known in the fashion trade often come too.

I loved the final show. The things I designed were all sports clothes. The shape of these clothes is really quite simple, so it’s sometimes hard to make them look new and interesting. But I particularly like the materials you use because they feel soft when you’ve got them on.

I was very lucky to get work as a fashion designer as soon as I’d finished college. A few students from my course were offered work by really famous fashion designers, but I was offered permanent work by the store I’d worked for as a student, and I’m now designing a special range of clothes for the store. In fact, most of the other students on my course aren’t designing at all – they’re working in advertising for the fashion industry.

I really love my work, but I intend to have my own business in the end – I’d like to design children’s sports clothes, and sell them on the internet. I don’t expect to be fantastically successful, but if I could earn enough to live on, that would be great.

Now you have 15 seconds to answer the questions, then you will hear the recording again.

 (пауза 15 секунд)

Now listen again.

  1. READING

For Items 1-7, read part of an employee handout regarding working with businesses in other countries and decide which country (A, B, C or D) is being referred to in the statements below.

Like most companies in an increasingly globalised world, our firm does business with other firms abroad. Company cultures vary worldwide, and it is important for delegates from our company to recognise how company culture overseas might be different from our own. This document will give you a brief guide to company culture in the countries we associate with.

  1.  Russia

Until recently, people and businesses were oppressed by the state and this has affected people’s attitudes. It is not uncommon for laws to be ignored and taxes to go unpaid. In some cases, only contracts between close personal friends are acknowledged. Therefore, networking is vital for successful business. Presently, the legal situation in Russia is in a state of flux, with laws constantly being rewritten. Those that exist are often unenforceable. Most agreements are therefore made on a trust basis, so it is vital that personal relationships do not break down. The management style is centralised and directive. Too much debate can indicate a lack of decisiveness. Subordinates take orders from the ‘big boss’. Many westerners see this as a lack of initiative on the part of middle managers, but in actual fact, middle managers have little power. Most delays occur because the question has not been presented to actual decision-maker. However, things are changing in Russia. The old regime is gradually being replaced by western business style, and younger managers will have a much more modern approach than their older counterparts.

  1.  South Korea

South Korea is one of the world’s most successful economies, having seen five consecutive decades of high economic growth. When faced with adversity, South 50 Koreans change direction quickly and effectively. Despite the frantic economic growth, South Korean society is still very conservative and conformist due to the influence of Confucian values. Companies are hierarchical and regimented and ‘face’ is very much valued. Consequently, change can sometimes be slow and painful. Managers are paternalistic, authoritative figures who expect their instructions to be carried out obediently and respectfully. In return, they give their subordinates support and help, not only in work issues but in home issues as well. Group harmony is important, so South Koreans avoid confrontation and blame, especially among people of equal rank. Friendship is therefore vital to business success. The Korean saying 'make a friend first and a client second' sums this up exactly.

  1.  Australia

Australia has a relatively small population in relation to its vast size. Its geographic isolation and its small domestic market mean that international trade is essential to guarantee future prosperity. Increasingly, this is done in countries in Asia rather than Commonwealth countries. Australian managers are not considered to have superior status to other workers. Their jobs are just different. Authoritative management styles are not appreciated among Australians workers. Instead, managers adopt a more consultative and inclusive style which encourages open debate. Challenging superiors is acceptable, indeed it is a sign of commitment and professionalism. Outsiders may consider such dialogues confrontational, but Australians regard them as effective ways to communicate ideas. Australian managers like to be seen as ‘one of the boys’ and they are more likely to socialise with their team than segregate themselves and just mix with other managers.

  1.  UK

In the last half century, Britain, like many industrialised countries, has moved away from heavy engineering towards service and high-tech industries. With this has come a major shift in management style. Hierarchical systems have been swept aside and 51 replaced by modern business models, heavily influenced by the US. The ‘job for life’ is rare. Neither managers nor junior workers expect to climb the corporate ladder within one company; rather, they manage their own career paths by progressing from company to company. Such short-termism can be frustrating for outsiders. British managers tend to be generalists rather than specialists, and are not necessarily the most technically competent person in the team. Instead, they are expected to have the necessary interpersonal skills to ensure the team works together effectively. They cultivate a close and humorous relationship with subordinates, which may be considered too soft. Giving direct orders can be seen as impolite, so managers often make indirect requests rather than explicit instructions, which is sometimes confusing for non-British people. Which country is being referred to in the statements below?

1

“The people I deal with keep moving on to new jobs.”

2

“Unless you’re friends, they may not honour your agreement.”

3

“It’s frustrating because the official regulations keep changing.”

4

“Disagreements between colleagues are frowned upon.”

5

“I thought the manager had the authority to make a decision, but it turned out that he didn’t.”

6

“The manager and another member of staff had a huge disagreement in the meeting, and no-one seemed to care.”

7

“They weren’t terribly charming – they just wanted to get on with making the deal.”

  1. READING

Read the passage below and answer questions 1–10.

The Green House Effect

  1. Saving the world begins at home. The energy we use to power our daily domestic lives and drive our cars produces almost half of our output of carbon dioxide, the gas which is the main contributor to the problem of global warming. The way in which we use energy is not only polluting but also incredibly wasteful. But there is nothing to stop us greatly reducing our energy consumption and creating a more comfortable world.
  2. Redesigning the home to bring our lifestyles more into balance with what the environment can cope with need not involve expensive or painful changes. Most of the technology to make the changes is already available. When the changes have been made, the home of the future will be a better place to live in. So what will it be like?
  3. We will have switched from ‘fossil fuels’ – coal, gas and oil – to sources of power which are non-polluting such as windmills or using the power of tides. Houses will be heavily insulated and heating systems made much more efficient. In addition, our future homes will use low-energy light bulbs.
  4.  With water costs rising enormously, most houses will trap rainwater and store it in a large, well-insulated tank in the cellar. This tank also serves to save energy: heat is recycled from other parts of the house to maintain a high water temperature for washing and central heating.
  5. Recycling waste will be much more common than it is today. Tins, bottles, plastic, and paper will be put into vents in the wall from where they will fall into divided bins for collection. All vegetable matter will go straight on to a compost heap in the garden.
  6. The home will be a cleaner place. Air conditioning will do much more than keep you cool. It will improve air quality by filtering out contaminating dust mites and by controlling moisture and condensation.
  7. Outside the home as well, life will have become more pleasant. The car will no longer be the threat to our health that it is today: it will run on hydrogen or a mixture of battery and safer petrol. It won’t be allowed to clog up our cities: people will use the tram, a clean, fast, and quiet form of city transport which many cities are already reintroducing.
  8. This picture of the future is one which should appeal to all of us. It’s one that our grandchildren could take for granted, not believing that people lived any other way, that people went around polluting, destroying, wasting resources, and apparently not caring. But if we want our grandchildren to have a world which is cleaner and safer, we have to start to change our ways. The picture of the future can become a reality but only if we do something about it. And we should do something about it soon.

Questions 1–4. Below you will find four headings. Each heading describes the contents of one of the paragraphs in the passage. However, since there are eight paragraphs and only four headings, four of the paragraphs will not fit any of the headings below. You need to choose which heading best describes which paragraph. Write the letter of a paragraph next to the number of the heading 1–4 on the separate answer sheet.

1. Homes of the future will be more hygienic.

2. We ought to change the way we live.

3. The way we live now damages the world.

4. Future energy needs will be lower and not cause pollution.

Questions 5–10. Choose option A, B, C or D which best answers the question. Circle the correct letter in boxes 5–10 on your answer sheet.

5. The author’s intention in writing the above article was to show…

A. the sort of future we can expect for our grandchildren.

B. why we should reduce pollution and use energy more efficiently.

C. why we have taken steps to reduce pollution and improve our use of energy.

D. how changes in house design will encourage people to use less polluting

energy.

6. Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with?

A. In the future, houses will be much healthier.

B. In the future, people will produce much less waste.

C. In the future, very few people will own their own car.

D. In the future, the problem of global warming will be better understood.

7. In the passage the author explains…

A. why using less energy has become more popular.

B. why sources of energy are going to become more scarce.

C. how savings could be made in the way energy is used.

D. how, unless we use less energy, energy costs will rise.

8. In the passage the author DOES NOT explain…

A. how our cities could be made cleaner.

B. why our use of energy needs to change.

C. why water costs will rise in the future.

D. how the way we live produces global warming.

9. According to the author, one of the differences between our way of life and that of people in the future might be that…

A. cars will be much cheaper to maintain.

B. fewer people will travel in the cities.

C. cars will have far more safety features.

D. cars will be used less than they are today.

10. The passage describes the homes of the future. Such homes, according to the

author, might NOT be built if we…

A. could not afford the necessary technology.

B. could not find alternative sources of energy.

C. were unable to reduce the amount of waste we produce.

D. failed to agree to make necessary changes in our lives.

  1. READING

You are going to read an article about the activities organized by different schools for Environmental Day. For questions 1-15 choose from the schools (A-D). The schools may be chosen more than once.

Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS DAY

A) Plumpton High School

This school decided to arrange a variety of activities, some aimed at

achieving a better understanding of environmental problems, and others

designed to be of practical help. For instance, the school magazine brought

out a special edition on the subject, full of articles and stories where pupils

expressed their feelings about the threats facing our environment. In another

attempt to find out for themselves how serious these threats really are, the

pupils decided to study the problem of pollution by making a survey, run

by the Science Department, into air pollution in the local shopping centre.

On the practical side, the school held a sponsored walk and handed over

$750 to the World Wildlife Fund. Pupils prepared a campaign to ban cars

from the city centre and reduce traffic congestion. They cycled through the

city and handed out brochures about the benefits of cycling and walking.

This gained a lot of publicity for the school.

B) Cresswell College

The staff and students at Cresswell College held a meeting and discussed

a number of suggestions. The most popular suggestion turned out to be the

most practical one; it was decided that the local environment should be

brightened up. Teams were sent out to plant flowers and young trees on

areas of land in the neighbourhood. Within the school, the senior students

prepared a report monitoring the progress of species threatened with

extinction. It was hoped that this would help publicise the problem. As part

of that project, a leading expert on wild birds was invited to come and

give a talk about the dangers faced by these creatures. He explained the

importance of the food chain and asked people to support local wildlife

            reserves.

C) Smithson Institute

The school had already been involved in some projects connected with

the environment, though naturally efforts were increased for

Environmental Awareness Day. For the last two years the school had been

studying the effects of changes in climatic patterns around the world and

how these can affect wildlife. A film about those magnificent marine

mammals, whales, was shown to the whole school as part of

Environmental Awareness Day, which was received with great enthusiasm

by pupils. Meredith Summers, architect, was invited to talk about how

pollution can destroy historic buildings in the region. Following that,

pupils decided to launch a campaign for the restoration of the medieval

square in the city centre and asked local authorities to support them financially.

D) Halliwell Comprehensive

The pupils at this inner-city comprehensive school felt that the best way

to mark Environmental Awareness Day would be to help people in the

area understand how important the environment is to them. One suggestion

that was greeted with enthusiasm was to measure the levels of noise in

Stanley Road, a busy local shopping street. The information was then

placed on a website that the school had started. In an effort to provide

direct assistance to people who are working to save the environment,

a jumble sale was held at the school, and $1,000 was donated to the local

office of the Wildlife Rescue Service. Finally, the school took pupils to

the coastal marshes of Easton-on-Sea. Many pupils reported afterwards

that they had never realized how terrible the effects of pollution could

             be on coastal wildlife.

Which school(s)

became well known after Environmental Awareness Day?     1._____

provided online information about the environment?              2._____

             asked a specialist to give a talk?                                               3. _____
