Double-deck trams were once popular in some European cities, like Berli n and London, throughout the British Empire countries in the early half of the 20th century including Auckland, Christchurch and Well i ngton in New Zealand; Hobart, Tasmania in Australia and in parts of Asia.

Hong Kong Tramways is a tram system in Hong Kong and one of the earliest forms of public transport in Hong Kong. Owned and operated by Veolia Transport , the tramway runs on Hong Kong Island between Shau Kei Wan and Kennedy Town, in Hong Kong have not only been a form of transport for over 100 years, but also a major tourist attraction and one of the most environmentally friendly ways of travelling in Hong Kong. It is the only exclusively double-decker operated tram system in the world, and one of only three non-heritage tram systems in the world that use double-deck cars.

When Hong Kong Tramways was founded, the 26 tramcars of the first fleet were all single-deck. After more than 100 years, we now own and operate a fleet of 163 tramcars which includes 2 antique tramcars. It is the world's largest fleet of double-deck tramcars still in operation, carrying an average of 230,000 passengers every day.
