 When it is a speed skating event, you can see skating racing around the track. Races, for both men and women, are held over varying distances. Time is very important factor. Points are given in relation to the skater’s time in each event. The distance winner is the skater who shows the best time. It is a thrilling competition to watch in the Olympic Games. Each country provides its male and female competitions. Races participate in different events: 500 m, 1000 m and so on. 

For events, you need a special international speed skating track. Usually it is a closed, a two-lane circuit that is needed. It may be 400 m long. The width of each lane must be at least 4 m. On the other hand, it may be more, for example, 5 m. Paints lines divide the lanes. The finished area is marked. Every meter of the last five meters before the finished line is marked too. 

Officials include a referee and assistant referee. Further, we can mention a starter and an assistant starter. There is also a judge and timekeepers. Moreover, not forget are a lap counter and two corner judges. 

Usually skaters stand still in an upright position. They cannot be over the starting line. They are supposed to strictly observe the existing rules. Competitors adopt their starting positions on command of “ready”. To start they need a whistle or a shot.

There are special rules with regard to overtaking. When a skater has been overtaken, he must remain at least 5 m behind his opponent. Competitors may have some rest, at least 30 minutes, between events.
