                                      Different ways to learn English

 «Изучение иностранных языков»  –  одна   из тем по программе любого колледжа или техникума, на которую отводится несколько часов.  На первом занятии обычно знакомятся со словами, читают текст (например, “Why do I study English?”, “ English as an international language”  и т.д.) и выполняют различные задания. Преподаватели работают по учебникам, но и предлагают студентам дополнительный материал (надо сказать, что студенты совершенно разные по уровню знания английского: кто-то еле читает и не знает самых простых правил грамматики, некоторые довольно хорошо владеют языком, но, увы, таких немного). На следующем занятии   по плану знакомство с  различными способами изучения английского.  В свое время мне понравилось задание из учебника “Enjoy English” для 11 класса по такому методу изучения английского, как “Crazy English”.  Предлагается прослушать текст и дописать предложения. На пару одного этого задания мало, поэтому стала искать ещё материал. Предлагаю примерный ход занятия и пояснения. Получилась вот такая компиляция.

1. Беседа по вопросам (у меня есть возможность распечатать материал, для слабых студентов это помощь).

2. Why do you study English? ( to travel abroad, to study abroad, to communicate with people of different nationalities, for future carrier, to raise your professional level, to read English literature in the original, to watch films without translation, to be taught at schools and colleges, etc.)
3. What do students do during their English classes at schools and colleges? ( to study pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, to discuss different themes, to ask and answer questions, to learn  poems by heart, to read ant translate texts, to make up and act dialogues, to do a lot of grammar exercises)
4. How can you call a way of studying English at schools and colleges? (traditional, etc.)
5. What other ways of learning English do you know? (to study in Britain, a good Tutor, a language school, an on-line course, etc.)

2. Прочитайте приведённый ниже текст. Преобразуйте слова, напечатанные заглавными буквами   так, чтобы они грамматически и лексически соответствовали содержанию текста.  (Из Открытого банка заданий для ОГЭ с сайта ФИПИ.  Я довольно часто использую эти лексико-грамматические задания.  Проверив слова, можно  прочитать и перевести, а студентам посильнее предложить высказать свое мнение, например, согласен – не согласен, хотел бы или нет и почему.  Некоторые студенты успевают выполнить все задания, кто-то по одному).

1. Learning languages is important nowadays. It is interesting and ___USE____. Language skills help people to travel, study, and establish __PROFESSION____ links with colleagues from other countries.  Some people say that learning languages is easy but others strongly ___AGREE____. They say that learning languages takes a lot of time and they are not happy with their progress anyway. Meanwhile, there are some strategies that can make you a successful language _____LEARN____ and save your time. The first idea is watching films in the original. If the films are ____INTEREST____, learning is just fun, not hard work. Online and live ___COMMUNICATE____ with people in the language you are learning also helps a lot.

2. It’s obvious that language skills are essential for everyone today. Foreign languages are very _____USE_______ not only for travelling, but also for studying and building a career. There are lots of ___DIFFER_____ ways to learn a new language.  However, everyone agrees that learning languages is ____POSSIBLE____ without dictionaries. The main job of any dictionary is to explain what words mean. This can be done via ____TRANSLATE_____ or the unknown word can be explained in other words. It’s also good if the dictionary contains some examples of how the word is used –  it helps to understand the ____MEAN_____ much better. If you are a busy _____LEARN_______, you probably prefer online dictionaries to paper ones. Online dictionaries are very convenient to use if you have Internet access.

3. Millions of people want to learn English. There are lots of ____DIFFER___ methods and the main problem is how to choose the best one. Some people believe that the most ____EFFECT____ way is to study English in Britain or in any other English-speaking country. The advantage of going to Britain seems obvious. Everyone around you speaks English. It’s practically ____POSSIBLE____ to avoid communication, so you’ll learn English ____QUICK____. On the other hand, one can learn English at home. There are lots of possibilities there too: a good _____TEACH_____, a language school or an on-line course. There are many ways to get a good language ____EDUCATE___ now. 

3. Вот еще материал для чтения и перевода. Для беседы можно задать вопросы: 

1. What should you do to speak English fluently and correctly?
2. Can you afford to travel to English-speaking countries? (можно познакомить студентов с такой фразой  I’m short of money)
3. Do you think studying English is boring, difficult or exciting? Why?

It’s rather hard but quite possible to speak English fluently and correctly. But you should work hard at the new language and study its grammar, spelling and vocabulary. You need to listen to educational records frequently, watch films in the original with subtitles and attend language courses. And if you can afford it you should travel to English-speaking countries because it’s a great experience to talk to native speakers there.

The language of Shakespeare seems to be a universal means of communication for a long time. So mastering English today is a must for every educated person and it is sure to give you much confidence and knowledge. Studying the language can be very exciting and enjoyable. I fully agree with a proverb: “A new language is a new world.”

Разговаривать на английском бегло и грамотно довольно сложно, но вполне возможно. Однако вам следует усердно работать над новым языком и изучать его грамматику, орфографию и словарный запас. Вам нужно часто слушать обучающие записи, смотреть фильмы в оригинале с субтитрами и посещать языковые курсы. И, если вы можете это себе позволить, вам стоит путешествовать в англоязычные страны, так как это огромный опыт – разговаривать с носителями языка.

Кажется, что язык Шекспира будет универсальным средством общения еще долгое время.  Поэтому освоение английского сегодня – это обязанность для каждого образованного человека, и оно наверняка придаст вам немало уверенности и знаний. Изучение языка может быть очень увлекательным и приятным. Я полностью согласен с поговоркой: «Новый язык - это новый мир».

4. Задание на аудирование из  учебника “Enjoy English” для 11 класса. Прослушать текст и дописать предложения  (слабым студентам предлагаю текст, но и отметка, конечно, ниже).

 “Crazy English” is the name of an untraditional method of learning English in mainland China which was conceived by a man named Li Yang. Li believed that the traditional way of learning English in China was ineffective. Li Yang’s method places heavy emphasis on practising English orally. His method can be described with the quote “To shout out loud, you learn.” Students practise his technique by going behind buildings or on rooftops and shouting English. They also go to his rallies and shout together; this helps them overcome their shyness (everybody is doing it, so nobody is embarrassed). But many members of the school administration in China disapprove of this method because they believe it goes against the traditional Chinese values of modesty and restraint. “Crazy English” originated when Li Yang (also known as “Crazy Lee”) was very concerned about passing a Chinese standardized English test for college students. During his studies he found that reading his assigned English work out loud was very effective for him. When he finally took the test, he earned the second highest score in his level. Soon after his excellent performance in the exam, he gave a lecture on his method of learning English. Li Yang graduated from Lanzhou University in 1990. After graduation, he continued to practice English using this method, often standing on the top of the office building where he worked and shouting in English. He did not start promoting his method on a large scale until 1994 when he founded the Li Yang Cliz English Promotion Studio. Since then, his method has become very popular; it currently has approximately 20 million practitioners, including several foreign teachers.

Различные пути изучения английского

Существует такое огромное количество способов изучения английского языка.

Курсы английского языка – традиционное изучение английского языка. Учитель исправляет ваши ошибки, в коллективе изучать интереснее.

Английский с репетитором по скайпу – отличный вариант. Есть возможность самому выбрать учителя, в том числе, у которого английский язык родной.

Английский за рубежом – тоже довольно хороший способ, есть возможность практики, особенно если поселиться в англоговорящей семье. Но это самый дорогой способ изучения английского языка.

Есть возможность изучать английский по различным  видео курсам, которые можно скачать в интернете. Их существует огромное количество. Моё мнение – все эти курсы имеют и преимущества и недостатки.

В заключение хочу сказать, что изучение английского языка это долгий и сложный процесс. Он требует огромного труда и мотивации.

There are so many ways to learn English.

English language courses are a traditional way to learn English. The teacher is going to correct your mistakes and it’s more fun to learn something in a group.

Learning English with a tutor on Skype is a great option. You can choose your teacher and even find an English speaker.  

Study English abroad is a good way to learn the language because you can practise and even live in an English speaking family. But it’s the most expensive way of studying the English language.

There is also an option to learn English with different video courses that you can download online. There are so many of them. I think all these courses have their own advantages but also some disadvantages.

At the end I would like to say that it’s a long and hard process to learn English. It requires a lot of motivations and hard work.
