Period II: the middle of the 5 th century - of Angles and Saxons, Jutes tribes spoke Old English.
During the 15 hundred years English has changed considerably. It was influenced by the language of the Danish invaders, Vikings (VIII-X centuries). Danish-origin words penetrated into English: husband, law, yacht, landscape, weapon and many others. English also borrowed many words from the other Scandinavian languages: sky, window, take, call, wrong.
Between XII-XVI centuries, English was influenced both in grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary by the Normans – the language of the people who conquered England in 1066. Among numerous borrowings there were such words as: power, people, dinner, supper, table, victory, brave, nation, government, parliament and plenty if others.
During the Renaissance (XIV-XVI centuries), there came “peaceful invasion” of numerous Latin and Greek words which were adopted into English: problem, minimum, catalogue, semester, seminar, tragedy. From Spanish and Italian: tomato, potato. From the language American Indians: hamburger, iceberg. From language Russian: shuba, rouble, troika. Later there appeared some new borrowings created by means of transliteration: sputnik, kvass.
