I. INTRODUCTION

- Hello, Everybody! Today we are going to speak about one of the most important things in our life. To introduce the topic of our lesson I want to show you one video.

II. VIDEO

Video. British family. Children

- I think you liked the film. We saw an average (statistical) British family (who have 4 children and who live in their own house). I hope the following statements (expressions) from the video will help you.

SLIDE 2

What is the most important thing in your life? The children.

We are dominated by children.

Lucy Cavendish and her partner Michael Agar live in Oxfrodshire with four children. They feel that children dominate home.

Everyone is talking about children.

We are children centric.

- What is the main idea of this video? Ok, who can tell me what we are going to talk about today? Any ideas? You are absolutely right. The topic of our lesson today is a British family and some aspects of this problem. We’ll try to compare British and Russian families, we live in different countries but we have much in common.

- So, what is the most important thing for modern British families? Yes, it is children.

III. CHANGING VALUES AND NORMS OF THE BRITISH FAMILY

The Family

Family structure

The family in Britain is changing.

SLIDE 4. Substantial changes during the 20th century:

The British live longer

marry later

have fewer children

and are more likely to get divorced than ever before.

There are patterns of remarriage when after divorce people start a new family.

Young people leave home earlier, though not necessarily to get married.

More women now go out to work

and more people, especially the old, live alone.

SLIDE 5. The nuclear family (parents and perhaps two children) has already replaced the extended family where several generations lived together.

SINGAPOUR. CONERS. Nuclear or extended family

- Now we’ll have a small discussion and do it this way. If you think that living in a nuclear family is more comfortable, you should join this corner. And if you prefer to live in an extended family, you should join the opposite corner. So, now you should prove your position, describing the advantages of each family system.

What are the advantages of a nuclear family system? What are the advantages of an extended family system?

  • How does the number of children per family in Britain compare with our country? How many children are there in an average Russian family or Tatar family? How big is your own family?

SLIDE 6 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF FAMILY SYSTEM

SLIDE 7. Norms of the British Family

The British live longer – life expectancy is 81.

People are marrying later: the average woman gets married at twenty-seven to a man who is just over two years older

People are getting married later now and many women do not want to have children immediately. They prefer to concentrate on their jobs and put off having a baby until late thirties.

Britain has one of the highest divorce rates in Western Europe: approximately one in three marriages end in divorce, half of them in the first ten years of marriage. As a result more people are getting remarried and there are now over 1.6 million single parents. It is estimated that by 2020 there will be more single people than married people.

People’s views on marriage are changing. Many people live together (cohabit) without getting married. Only 60% of these couples will get married. It is estimated that 40 % of couples live together before getting married. In the past people married before they had children, but now 40% of children are born to unmarried (cohabiting) parents or partners.

SLIDE 8. There has also been a sharp rise in the rate of illegitimacy; by 2015 nearly 40 % of babies were born outside marriage.

And despite the changes it is usually the woman who has overall responsibility for domestic life: the traditional division of family responsibilities still persists.

SLIDE 9. Table. Division of family responsibilities

  • Now I want you to study the table describing who does the housework and takes care of the children in British families. In the left column you can see household duties, housework parents usually do. And there are three additional columns giving the information about that which housework is done mainly by men, shared equally, which means parents do it together, and housework done mainly by women in British families.

Housework

mainly men

shared equally

mainly women

washing clothes and ironing

preparing evening meal

cleaning

shopping

washing dishes

paying household bills

repairs

looking after sick children

disciplining children

- So, which kinds of housework are the most popular with British men? What conclusions can you make about who does the housework in a British family? How does this compare with what happens in your family? Can you say that the situation is the same in Russian families?

SLIDE 10. And now I want to fill in the same table but describing the situation in Russian families, in your families. Does your father wash clothes and iron?

Who does the housework and takes care of the children in Russian families?

SLIDE 11-12

I. Family structure. Comprehension/Understanding

Answer the questions

1. What are the trends in family structure mentioned above?

2. At what age do people in Britain get married on average?

3. What is the difference between a nuclear and an extended family?

4. Explain the following: illegitimacy, remarriage, single parent

SLIDE 13 WORKING MOTHERS

Britain has a high percentage of working mothers compared to some other countries

In 1931 10 % of married women were in employment

By 2015 the proportion of married women working has increased to over 50 per cent

It is now normal for a woman:

to be in full-time work until the birth of the first child

to return to work after having a child, although this may be a part-time job

But provisions for maternity leave and child care are among the lowest in Europe.

SLIDE 14. Matching Vocabulary

1. Match words or phrases which are opposite in meaning.

SINGAPOUR. JOT THOUGHTS. (МОЗГОВОЙ ШТУРМ)

TIC-TAC-TOE (КРЕСТИКИ-НОЛИКИ)

YOUNG PEOPLE

Mass media reports say that all young people in Britain are punks or football hooligans. They are wrong.

There is a wide cross-section of youth from

SLIDE 15. Rastafarians to

SLIDE 16. Young Conservatives from

SLIDE 17.  Skinheads to

SLIDE 18. Pupils at expensive private schools

SLIDE 19. For many children family life

has become more relaxed and less strict

being independent and free to choose are priorities

many young people have a considerable amount of freedom

SLIDE 20. and the things they are interested in reflects it:

music

computers

television

shopping

relations

fashion and money predominate.

SLIDE 21. There are a number of social problems associated with being young:

some schools have problems with discipline and motivation

crime and drug-taking in some areas have reached serious levels

employment prospects for young people who leave school early or without qualifications are not good

children do not take much exercise, as a result, many including quite young children are overweight.

III. Young people.

At what age in Britain can you do the following: drive a car, get married, buy alcohol, leave school

SLIDE 22. AGES YOU CAN LEGALLY DO THINGS

Leave school                                           16/

Ride a small motor-bike                          16/

Buy cigarettes                                          16/

Get married (with parents consent)         16/

Drive a car                                               17/

Buy alcohol                                             18/

Vote                                                         18/

Get married (without parents consent)    18/

FRAYER MODEL. МОДЕЛЬ ФРЕЙЕРА (FAMILY)

SINGAPOUR. JOT THOUGHTS. (МОЗГОВОЙ ШТУРМ)

Final task. On these stickers you should write down the most important aspects which keep families together from your point of view. And now come up to the blackboard and stick them on here composing a word “family”. Well done!

(love, care, attention, responsibility, household duties, employment, grandparents, holidays, family parties…)

Although patterns are changing, most people in Britain still get married and have children and stay together until the ends of their lives.

SLIDE 23. Thank you for your activity!
