Вариант 1
Script 1.1
Text A.
Dear friends! The week of documentary films, which we held last month, attracted lots of attention. Today we are starting a new event. And we are happy to see you here at our exhibition of contemporary art. In the week ahead you’re going to enjoy the works of our local
artists. Instead of a lottery, this time we’re going to reward all our guests. Next Sunday, on the last day of our exhibition everyone can choose a book on art. Keep your ticket, you can exchange it for a book.
Text B.
Hi, mum! I’m gonna be late for dinner. We’re going to stay at school till seven pm. There’s a football match here and we need to support our team because it’s the final. We’ve got a good chance of winning it. Don’t worry if I don’t answer my phone. It’ll be noisy, so I may not hear it. I’ll call you as soon as the game’s over. And don’t ask me about homework. I’ll do it later, I promise. Harry said he’d help me if I have any problems but there won’t be any problems. See you later!
Text C.
-Excuse me! I’ve left my umbrella in this shopping centre.
-Oh, dear! We’ve got lots of lost things: phones, bags and even a vintage black-and-white TV set!
-Right! But I want to find out about …
-Amazing! Last week ten gloves were left. All of different colours.
-Yes, I understand, but I need to get my umbrella back. It’s bright and noticeable. You can’t confuse it with anyone else’s.
-Of course. What did you say its like? We’ve found a large light blue umbrella the other day.
-No, it’s not mine. Mine has got red, pink and violet flower patterns on a white background.
-Ok, let’s see.
Text D.
-Hello! I’m Mark. How can I help you?
-Hi, Mark! I’m Alice. I’d like to join your fitness centre.
-Very good! What activity do you enjoy? Swimming, aerobics, yoga or dancing?
-Well, I don’t like swimming. Aerobics is too exhausting and difficult. I’d prefer yoga. I’ve never participated before but I’ve heard it’s good for the body and for the spirit.
-Yes, that’s right. I can include you in our class for beginners.
-Yes, that’s fine. Do you I have to bring my own yoga mat or do you provide it here?
-Wait a moment, Alice. I’ll introduce you to our instructor. She’ll explain everything.

Presenter: Good afternoon! Today we’ve asked five people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about learning foreign languages. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
I have to say that I find learning languages really difficult but nevertheless I want to speak at least two or three foreign languages: French, Spanish and maybe Chinese. It’s necessary in today's world when people travel a lot and communicate across countries. It’s also very good for successful business if you’re able to work with foreign partners and know their language and culture and can establish better contact with them.
Speaker B.
In my opinion, it’s so exciting to learn a foreign language. It’s so much fun to use all those techniques to memorize new words and I just love comparing the words and structures of my native language with foreign ones. I know many people find it so hard or even boring and
monotonous but I don’t understand them. I really enjoy learning foreign languages. It’s the best way to spend your free time and I always feel enthusiastic after a language class.
Speaker C.
I don’t know why so many people are interested in learning a foreign language. I think it’s the most monotonous task in the world. It's all about learning new words, making up unrealistic dialogues and reading texts. It’s just a nightmare. It’s the worst way to spend your time, in my opinion. I can actually find more exciting things to do. I’ll only learn a foreign language if I need it for my future job, which I hope won’t ever happen to me.
Speaker D.
I believe that it is not very difficult to learn a foreign language. As far as I know, some students are able to communicate reasonably in a new language only a few weeks after they start to learn it. They can explain what they need in some certain standard situations fairly well. They make mistakes of course. Still, I think minor pronunciation or grammar mistakes are not so important as long as you can express your thoughts and be understood by other speakers.
Speaker E.
If you ask me, well, I think learning a foreign language is very hard. I can’t say that it is boring as I feel quite happy learning new words and reading texts in a foreign language. I don’t think it takes a long time either. I mean the time investment is definitely worth it. It’s just not very easy to make yourself work on a regular basis. And you have to read a lot and be clever and have a good memory and make notes. It’s really hard.

Interviewer: Well, first of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to take part in our survey.
Respondent: Oh, that’s fine. I don’t mind. I’m fourteen in case you need my age for your survey.
Interviewer: You look even younger than fourteen. And where were you born? Respondent: In London.
Interviewer: Right. And have you ever lived in any other places?
Respondent: No, I’ve spent all my life here. I go to visit my grandparents in Oxford sometimes but that doesn’t count.
Interviewer: No, it doesn’t.
Respondent: Come on. Ask your questions! I like answering questions.
Interviewer: You must be good at school. What’s your favourite subject?
Respondent: I like literature most of all and I’m good at it. History is not bad but it isn’t so interesting as literature.
Interviewer: I see. Well, let’s get to basic things like your daily routine. What’s your usual breakfast like?
Respondent: Pardon?
Interviewer: I mean what do you usually eat in the morning before school? Respondent: A sandwich.
Interviewer: Just that?
Respondent: Yeah, every morning mum makes a big sandwich for me. It may be with ham, chees, tuna fish, whatever. But it’s always a sandwich because I like it. And I don’t feel hungry for a long time. And for lunch...
Interviewer: Stop, stop! You really enjoy talking about food. I wouldn’t be surprised if you want to be a cook in the future. I mean to choose cooking as a career. Respondent: Oh no! No way! I enjoy eating, not cooking. And as for my career, I want to be a journalist. Like you. Because I like talking to people asking all sorts of questions.
Interviewer: Being a journalist is not only about talking.
Respondent: Just kidding. I know. Of course, it’s not only about talking.
Interviewer: Hmm... One more question. What about your hobby? It’s not cooking, I understand.
Respondent: No, it’s definitely not. It’s painting.
Interviewer: Painting?
Respondent: Do you mean with oils and brushes?
Interviewer: Exactly! And also with watercolours and pencils.
Respondent: Amazing! One more question if you don’t mind.

Dear guests! We are happy to welcome you to our hotel. This year we’ve got a surprise for you which is going to be particularly interesting for families with children. Now, along with splashing
in the pool and seeing the aquarium with tropical fish, our young guests can visit the place where we grow fruit and vegetables for our restaurant. Right behind our building, there’s a territory with a garden and an enclosure with hens, ducks, rabbits and even a couple of goats.
Text B
Hi, Jane! It’s Amanda. I’m calling to say that we had to change the date of my birthday party. In the invitation, it’s written as the 14th of October, which is Saturday, but the weather forecast says it’ll be raining the whole day. Not very good for a garden party, is it? That’s why we’ve moved it to Sunday which promises to be a warm and sunny day. The time is the same - at 2pm. Call me on Friday evening to confirm that you are coming. See you on Sunday!

Seller: Hello, can I help you?
Man: Yes, I need to buy a present for my nephew.
Seller: How old is he? And what’s he interested in?
Man: He is nine. Like most boys, he likes playing with his dog, assembling Lego, drawing lots of other things.
Seller: How about a book about searching for a lost castle?
Man: Sounds good but I gave him a book for Christmas and he wasn’t very impressed. Any other idea?
Seller: Well, you mentioned Lego or a skateboard!
Man: He has already got both.
Seller: Then I would recommend this big set of paints.
Man: Oh, I think this one would do. I’m sure he’ll like it. Where can I pay?

James: Hi, Kate!
Kate: Oh, sorry, James. What did you say? I didn’t hear you.
James: Of course. Because you were wearing your headphones. What did you listen to?
Kate: My Spanish course.
James: Cool. Your new hobby? It’s a shame I can’t speak any foreign languages. My brother is learning French. He even tries to write poems in French.
Kate: There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Some people enjoy learning languages, others are good at other things. As for you - you’ve got a great talent for roller skating!
James: I won’t argue. I won the first prize in the City Rollers’ competition, by the way.
Kate: Congratulations!

Script 1.2
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give the short interview and share their opinions about life in big cities. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A
Of course, big cities can’t boast many parks or fresh and clean air, but life in a big city is certainly exciting. You can watch new blockbusters or attend theatre performances or concerts of the best musicians. Big cities have many museums, concert halls and what not. I also enjoy the hustle and bustle of a big city – people walking fast along the streets, cars moving and beeping, it’s really fun.
Speaker B
I live in a big city, but I wish I could move to the countryside. My parents have good jobs here, but they are also dreaming of going freelance and living in the country. You see, the air is very polluted in my city and the tap water is not drinkable either and it’s hard to find a place to go for a walk, which is certainly bad for health. We need to find a way out as long as we haven’t developed any illnesses yet, I think.
Speaker C
On the one hand, big city life is interesting, but on the other hand, big cities are very noisy. You can hear loud sounds from cars moving along the streets, even at night, and you can easily get irritated because of it. The fast lifestyle many of you live when you are always in a hurry also makes you annoyed and tired. You get nervous and worried, which is certainly not very good for you. Being in a bad mood all the time because of the noise leads to anxiety and stress.
Speaker D
I do understand that life in a big city has a lot of minuses, like bad ecology or a lot of stress, but to be perfectly frank, I wouldn’t like to live anywhere else. I don’t think that the countryside can offer many employment opportunities. There are few workplaces there and the salaries are much lower than in big cities. I think that's why many people prefer to stay in a big city, rather than move to the country.
Speaker E
Of course, big cities offer better schools and jobs and more chances to attend concerts and theatre plays, but I still find life in a big city uninteresting and monotonous. It’s the same all the year round. The colours around don’t change; it’s the same routine every morning and every evening. You go on the same buses, all people in the street look grey, dull and busy. Being busy doesn’t make life exciting. I'd actually prefer to have more fun.

Interviewer: First of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to take part in our survey and talking to me. We are doing it as a part of our university course. It won’t take you long, I promise.
Respondent: Oh, that’s fine. I’ve got time and I’m happy to help you with your project. Do you need my name and age?
Interviewer: Only your age.
Respondent: OK. I’m sixty.
Interviewer: Sixty? You don’t look it!
Respondent: Thank you.
Interviewer: What do you do to keep so fit? Any special gymnastics?
Respondent: No. But I’ve been playing tennis since childhood. And still do it once or twice a week. It helps me to be in shape.
Interviewer: Any special food? What is the basis of your diet?
Respondent: Vegetables. I eat lots of them. There’s no need to explain how good vegetables are for the body and mind. And of course I try to avoid junk food and meat. I’m from India and we have traditions of cooking vegetables there. My wife is a professional cook, by the way. She cooks very well!
Interviewer: Lucky you! So you were born in India, weren’t you. Did you leave India long ago?
Respondent: Yes. I went to university in the United States to be an engineer and, since graduation, have been travelling a lot.
Interviewer: Because of your job?
Respondent: Yes. Companies from different countries still employ me. Good engineers are always needed.
Interviewer: That’s true. It’s one of the most important professions in the world.
Respondent: There are lots of others, equally important, to be fair. Every person considers their job important. I’m sure you feel the same about your future career.
Interviewer: Sure. Yes, I really do. And getting back to the survey... one more question - what do you do in your free time?
Respondent: I used to play computer games when I was younger. But now I don’t. It’s not very good for my eyes, at least my doctor says so. Now I go fishing whenever I have an opportunity. But I don’t have much time for this hobby yet. I’ll be going fishing much more often when I’m retired. And I’ll probably join the Fishermen’s Club.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time, but I’ve got a few more questions if you don’t mind...

Hi, Jack! It’s Cathy. I’m just calling to say sorry. I didn’t come to your birthday party yesterday because I had a very bad day. It all started in the morning. My dog Buddy got very sick. We took him to the hospital and he was operated on. I waited there till I could take him home.
Now everything is fine, he’s at home, lying on my leg while I’m trying to concentrate on my Maths homework. Anyway, I hope you had a great day. Sorry again and happy birthday for yesterday.
Text C.
-Ms. Smith, did you want to see me?
-Yes, Oliver. Thanks for coming.
-I just want to make sure you enjoy learning in our language school and that everything is fine. You don’t have any relatives in this country as far as I know.
-No, I don’t.
-Are you happy with the place where you’re staying?
-Yes. At first I wanted to stay with a host family but there was a vacant room in the hostel. My friend and I decided to have a look and we stayed there.
-Fine. Do you cook for yourself in the shared kitchen or do you eat out?
-We cook for ourselves. I can do it quite well. My mum told me.
-Really?

-I see. You are collecting the information for the project.
-Exactly.
-Right. Any plans for tonight?
-I don’t know yet. It’s cold and rainy. Nasty weather.
-My sister said it’s a sort of weather for knitting and drawing.
-I hate both. What I like is making pies, cakes and biscuits.
-Oh, cooking! It sounds more original than drawing and much tastier.

Script 1.2
Good afternoon! Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about reading. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
I like reading, especially historical novels. That's why I know more than most of my classmates. Our teacher often asks me to give presentations to the whole class. I know it takes a long time to read a novel but it’s definitely worth it. It helps me to broaden my outlook and it’s easier for me to do my homework or perform better if we have a test at school. I think I get more information from novels than they give us in student books.
Speaker B.
I wish I could read more as I know it can help me with my school education but I just can’t make myself do it. Many people find it interesting to read but not me. When I close a book, I forget all about it. So, it is not interesting for me to go back to it. I don’t enjoy the process of reading, that’s a fact. I wonder what I can do about it. My friends love reading and don’t understand me. So, I’ll probably have to do something about it.
Speaker C.
Reading is important but it’s hard to find a gap in my schedule to read a book for pleasure. I’m always too busy having classes at school, going to the swimming pool, playing football with my friends, doing homework and so on. I have piles of books which I want to read but I don’t have the time to do it because you need at least an hour in the evening for a good book. It’s so hard to squeeze that much time in my packed schedule.
Speaker D.
Reading is not simply my hobby. It’s my passion. I don’t know what can be more exciting than buying a new book or getting one in a library and enjoying the events that take place there. It’s simply breathtaking. I know books aren’t cheap but they are worth the money because nothing can give you more fun and pleasure than a good book. You can read about exciting adventures and mysterious events set in unforgettable places.
Speaker E.
I don’t know why so many people love reading. To begin with, books are rather expensive to buy and libraries don’t always have the books you may want to read. What they have is outdated books, which nobody wants to read anymore. Some people may find it interesting to read, but in my opinion it’s such a waste of time. Most books don’t tell you anything educational or practical. You forget one as soon as you finish it.

Interviewer: First of all, I would like to thank you for taking part in our survey.
Respondent: Oh, it’s ok. It’s the third survey I’m taking part in this month. Interviewer: Really?
Respondent: Yes, I was interviewed by your colleagues from TV. They asked me about travelling and my favourite cities.
Interviewer: And what’s your favourite city?
Respondent: Rome. It’s my native city. I was born there but then my parents left Rome for New York. The second interview was about music and music styles like classical rock, pop, you know?
Interviewer: Yes, sure. And for my survey I have to ask about your age, if you don’t mind, of course.
Respondent: No, I don’t. I’m thirty, I turned thirty last month and haven’t got used to this number yet.
Interviewer: I see. As you start to talk about music, what’s your favourite style?
Respondent: It’s not easy to choose, I like everything, but when I have a choice, I always choose classical jazz.
Interviewer: Jazz? It’s my favourite, too. Is your job related to music? Are you a musician, a costume designer, a music band manager?
Respondent: You’ve hit it! A manager! But my job has nothing to do with music, unfortunately. I’m a manager and I work in a large business centre, which is not very exciting.
Interviewer: It’s an important job and it maybe stressful. You definitely need some relaxation after your working day. Do you do aerobics, go jogging or anything else?
Respondent: I used to do aerobics when I was at school. Now I prefer swimming to anything. There’s a pool close to the office and it’s very convenient.
Interviewer: Right. It’s very good for the body, as far as I know. Do you do anything else to keep fit? Some sort of a diet?
Respondent: No, I don’t stick to any diet though I try to avoid unhealthy food like chips, crisps and hamburgers.
Interviewer: Right.
Respondent: I like rice. I cook it with vegetables, fish and meat. In fact, rice is the basis of my daily menu. And even for dessert I often have rice pudding.
Interviewer: Well, to stay on this theme, the desserts are delicious food, I would like to ask you one more question.

Harry: Don’t you like Germany?
Jess: I definitely prefer French countryside to Germany or Britain and I’ve got cousins there. We usually have so much fun together.
Harry: And you can practise your French there, can’t you?
Jess: Not really. My cousins are learning English and want me to speak English so that they can practise.

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us the short interview and share their opinions about spending time outdoors. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A
As for me, I think it’s absolutely necessary to spend as much time outdoors as possible. My parents spend the biggest part of the day at their offices and I spend half a day at school, too. So, whenever we have a chance to breathe some fresh air, we do it. It could be a short picnic or a long hike. It doesn’t really matter where we go. We feel refreshed and full of energy after a picnic in one of the local parks. I think everybody needs it.
Speaker B
When I can’t go for a walk in the evening I start getting a headache and I find it difficult to fall asleep. It’s important for me to feel good, so I try to spend my weekends outdoors. We may go hiking with my parents or just have a picnic with my classmates where we play active games, which is also quite useful for staying fit. I feel best after a long walk. I have no headaches and feel as I had a good, proper training session in the gym.
Speaker C
I wish I could spend more time outdoors because I know it’s good for me but I find it hard to find any time for it in my packed schedule. I have many classes at school and a lot of homework in the evening. Plus I attend dancing classes twice a week. So I’m just too busy to go for a walk. It’s practically impossible for me to do it regularly. I wish I had more free time, so that I could improve my health and mood while walking.
Speaker D
I love spending time outdoors as I think it’s one of the most exciting things to do. I love walking with my mum, watching beautiful trees and flowers. The colours of nature are incredibly beautiful. They are red, orange and golden in autumn and all kinds of green, pink, blue and white in summer. I also enjoy playing games with my friends outdoors. We can go skateboarding or roller-skating in a local park. It’s so much fun, believe me.
Speaker E
I know many people say that they enjoy spending time outdoors, watching nature changing its colours. They find it necessary or useful. But as for me, I just find it so uninteresting. It’s such a waste of time and so monotonous. The park is almost the same all the year round. There’s nothing exciting there to see. I’d rather read a book at home instead of walking monotonously along the same routes and the same parks with the same people.

Respondent: My pleasure. But I don’t have more than ten minutes. My group is waiting for me. We’re a having a brief stop here.
Interviewer: Oh, you’re a tourist, aren’t you?
Respondent: Yes, I’m on a bus excursion in your city and I do really like your city, cosmopolitan and friendly. I’ve been to many places and I can compare.
Interviewer: How many countries have you visited so far?
Respondent: Twenty. Yes... Right... Twenty!
Interviewer: Oh, you are an experienced traveller. And where were you born?
Respondent: In Canada. In the north of Canada. Have you ever been there?
Interviewer: No, I’ve been to Alaska and to the USA, but I hope to see your country one day.
Respondent: You’d be welcomed. If you come, I’ll take you to the best pizzeria in the country. No! The best in the world!
Interviewer: Looks like you like pizza!
Respondent: Who doesn’t? It’s my favourite dish. You can make it with any topping and it will always taste different. Pizza with ham, mushrooms, peppers. You can even make it sweet with pineapples or berries. It’s healthy if you cook it properly. What I really hate is junk foods and all sorts of candies. They literally kill your teeth. Interviewer: You’re talking like my dentist.
Respondent: Because I’m a dentist. And I’ve seen so many times how people ruin their teeth because they just don’t care. Everyone should be educated on what to eat and how to cook.
Interviewer: Oh, can you cook, by the way? And how often do you do it if ever?
Respondent: Of course, I can. Cooking is my hobby. I often invite friends and cook for them. They play ‘Bingo’ and enjoy my food, especially when I present an original national recipe from a country I’ve visited.
Interviewer: Sounds great!
Respondent: Wait! I have to tell you that our guide is waving to me, which means I need to board the bus.
Interviewer: OK. The last question. What transport do you usually use when travelling?
Respondent: I love travelling by train. So relaxing! And I choose the train instead of the plane whenever it’s possible. I’m sorry, I need to go.

Jess: Yeah, you are good at Science. Probably, the best in the class.
Mark: It’s because I enjoy it most of all! Science explains how the world works. It’s fantastic. Like magic!
Jess: Probably. I like neither Maths nor Science. I don’t mind French, but grammar drills make me feel so bored.

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about birthday parties. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A
I’m sure that a birthday is a special day for any of us. Some people may like spontaneous parties, but I believe we should do our best to organize a great party on this day. It’s necessary to think about everything beforehand – like making a list of guests and buying food and soft drinks and writing up a menu so that there is nothing there your guests are allergic to and thinking of entertainment or even small gifts for your guests.
Speaker B
In my opinion, when you invite guests to your birthday party, the most important thing to think about is definitely what will be on the table for your guests to eat. There must be a delicious birthday cake with cream, chocolate and maybe fruits and berries. It will impress your guests. There must be other dishes as well – maybe chicken or fish – and juices. Everything must be fresh and tasty – a catering service could definitely help you there.
Speaker C
As for me, I love surprise parties. They show you how much your friends and relatives care for you and love you. It’s especially good when your birthday is on a usual workday and you don’t actually plan anything in particular – well, maybe a tasty cake from your parents. You enter the hall – and you see all your friends standing around, shouting “Happy Birthday!” The hall is decorated with balloons – and you didn’t have any idea about it.
Speaker D
If you ask me, I think a really good birthday party must leave a lasting impression on people. Nobody gets excited about a party with cakes and clowns for entertainment. You can call a special agency and ask them to organize something special for you – a quest party, a fancy- dress ball or any theme party which will be a real treat for your guests. Now there are book or film themed parties to which guests come dressed as characters from book or film they like.
Speaker E
I don’t actually like inviting a lot of people to my birthday party and I try to avoid going to birthday parties if a lot of guests are expected. I think it is good when all the guests know each other at a birthday party. A limited circle makes it more comfortable for people to communicate and take part in the entertainment programme you have for them. It’s not very pleasant to be at a party if you know nobody there and have nobody to talk to.

Interviewer: Thank you for taking part in our survey. I really appreciate it.
Respondent: It’s OK. I’m waiting for a friend, anyway. She’s keen on photography and is buying some accessories for her camera at the moment. It may take her a long time.
Interviewer: Right. And as we are talking at the entrance to the Fine Arts exhibition, I guess that you are interested in arts, aren’t you?
Respondent: Yes, I am. I love arts and I do some painting myself. Just as a hobby, not professionally.
Interviewer: You need to see Italy then. There are lots of places for art lovers there.
Respondent: Oh, yes! Italy is on my travel list. We were going to fly there last winter but I had to go to Finland instead, on a business trip.
Interviewer: Sorry to hear this.
Respondent: Never mind, it’s OK. I’m going to Rome this June anyway. I’m even planning to hire a private guide to show me the most interesting places in the city.
Interviewer: Good. I guess you are a very busy person, aren't you? What do you do for a living?
Respondent: You mean what my job is, don't you? I'm a scientist. I don't think we should discuss it in detail. It's a specific sphere.
Interviewer: Right, of course. You are a very young scientist, I should say.
Respondent: No, not really. I'm 40. Do you 40 may sound like a very serious age?
Interviewer: But you look younger.
Respondent: Thank you.
Interviewer: Anyway, getting back to our survey, what's your favourite dish? Is it pizza or any other Italian cuisine?
Respondent: Right. It's Italian cuisine, but it's not pizza. It's pasta.
Interviewer: Pasta?
Respondent: Yes, with different sauces.
Interviewer: Right. And the last question is about recreation activities. Do you play any sport? Tennis, probably?
Respondent: Right. I find sports absolutely necessary to stay healthy, physically and mentally. But it isn't tennis. I prefer team sports. I play basketball with my colleagues at least twice a week.
Interviewer: Basketball?
Respondent: Yes. I may not be tall enough for the game, but I'm a good player, actually.
Interviewer: I'm sure you are. Thank you for your time.

Hi, Tom. Andrew calling. I’m on a bike ride at the moment and want to ask you a favour. I need to go to my grandma’s place this weekend. She needs some help there with her house and garden. Unfortunately, I can’t take my dog with me and I just wonder if you could walk him on Saturday evening and on Sunday in the morning. Let me know about your decision. OK. And I’ll bring you a bag of apples from the garden whatever your decision is.

Mike: Are you OK, Helen? You look tired.
Helen: Oh, Mike! I feel exhausted. The test was difficult.
Mike: I don’t think so. Some tasks were very easy.
Helen: For you, not for me. All those equations and calculations are beyond my understanding. And they have nothing to do with real life.
Mike: I can’t agree. I think Maths is very practical. The world around us exists due to mathematics laws.
Helen: OK. I don’t want to argue but I prefer ten tests in Science to one in Maths. History is awful, too. I can never remember all those dates.
Mike: I know Science is your favourite but we can’t take test only in our favourite subjects.

Ann: What’s up Nick? Why is your little brother crying? Has he hurt himself? Have you broken his toy again?
Nick: No, he’s alright as well as his toys. He just wants to play with his cars with me. Ann: Why don’t you play with him then?
Nick: Look, Ann, we played with these cars in the morning and yesterday, and the day before yesterday. I’m sick and tired of his toys. He’s got a garage with toy cars and mum keeps buying them again and again.
Ann: But he’s little and so cute! It’s normal he enjoys playing with his older brother, isn’t it?
Nick: OK, I’ll let you play with him for a change. You’re his older cousin. Go on, go on! Show me how to do this!

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about school uniforms. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A
My parents often say it’s good to have school uniforms but I don’t agree with them. I think school uniforms make us all look the same. They often come in dull colours like dark blue or dark green are not exactly the colours which teenagers like to wear or find attractive. Modern teenagers need a chance to express themselves, wearing the clothes they really like, not those monotonous colours and styles all the time.
Speaker B
In my opinion, school uniforms might be a nice thing. They don’t look boring but it would be nice if they made it from different materials. I don’t know why but the material for school uniforms is just horrible. In some weather you feel too hot in it. In some times you feel too cold. Uniforms also wrinkle easily, which makes pupils feel bad. Skirts are also not the best idea for girls. I think trousers are more practical and make girls feel confident.
Speaker C
I think it’s a really good idea that students look the same in their school uniforms. Some people may find it boring but let me look at the issue from a different standpoint. I don’t have to think what to put on in the morning and worry if I look cool enough comparing with my classmates. Before our school introduced the uniform it used to take me ages to pick an outfit in the morning. It’s actually very convenient though uniforms are not always attractive.
Speaker D
My parents think that buying a school uniform is a sheer waste of money. Well, it may look nice and be practical but let’s face it. It costs money. If not for the school uniform, I’ll be wearing jeans with shirts or T-shirts to school and my mother needs to buy these items of clothes anyway unlike uniform. A uniform isn’t cheap and as the kids grow really fast you need to spend extra money every year. It would be better without school uniforms.
Speaker E
Some of my classmates think that school uniforms prevent them from wearing what they want and they look bad in them. But I think school uniforms are so nice looking. It looks great when all the girls and boys in the class wear the same colours. Besides, the colours selected for school uniforms are always elegant and attractive and suit most youngsters. School uniforms are stylish and many students of good schools are happy and proud to wear their uniforms.

Interviewer: Excuse me! Do you mind if I ask you a few questions. It’s for a survey which we’re doing for our university course.
Respondent: Ah, go ahead! It'll be fun because normally it’s me, who asks people questions whether they mind it or not.
Interviewer: Pardon me?
Respondent: I’m a policeman and it’s part of my job to ask people questions. Interviewer: I’m sorry to have bothered you.
Respondent: Chill out! I’m not on duty. It’s my day off and I’m going to the parking lot to see a friend. He’s a taxi driver. But that can wait. I really don’t mind answering your questions. What information do you need for your survey? What do I have for dinner?
Interviewer: Yes! How did you know? There’s really a point about your favourite food in the survey.
Respondent: For me it’s chicken. I like chicken with rice or potatoes. My wife cooks it really well. She prefers vegetables herself and practically doesn’t eat any meat.
Interviewer: I see, sir. And do you play any sports?
Respondent: Sure. I need to be in good shape. Otherwise I won’t meet my job requirements. Athletics. That’s what I do. It develops all the muscles. I used to play football when I was younger but now I don’t.
Interviewer: So you do athletics?
Respondent: Right. And I’m still very good at it. Better than some of my young colleagues in spite of my age.
Interviewer: And what’s your age?
Respondent: Fifty. Yeah, I was born fifty years ago. It’s difficult to believe it that it was so long ago.
Interviewer: And where were you born?
Respondent: Can’t you see it, buddy? In Ireland, of course. Where else can you see people with hair as red as mine? My wife is from Poland, but when I retire we’re planning to settle down in Ireland. My wife doesn’t mind it.
Interviewer: And what’s your hobby?
Respondent: My hobby? You’ll never believe what I do when I have free time! Interviewer: What is it?
Respondent: You probably expect some extreme hobby like hunting or horse-riding. Nothing of a kind. I love gardening and that’s what I’m going to do till the end of my life. No, I’m not kidding. You can see my garden if you’d like. It’s the best in our neighbourhood.

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give a short interview and share their opinions about being an only child. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A
My friends often say that I’m lucky to be the only child in the family because I get all the attention of my parents. Well, I can see their point but I’ve always wanted to have a sister or a brother because it’s not always interesting to play alone and to have some company for games would be really nice. It’s so much fun having more children in the family when they can play with each other, and be good friends, and enjoy each other’s company.
Speaker B
When I was a child I could have any toy I wanted because I had no brothers or sisters, so my parents didn’t have to save money. I was a centre of attention for my parents and I loved it. It’s still the same. I don’t think it’s boring to be an only child. In fact, it’s a great experience and gives a child a sense of self-confidence and good self-esteem. I love the fact that I’m the most important person for my parents and it’ll always be like that.
Speaker C
I think being an only child teaches you a lot of things about life. First of all, you have nobody to play with, so you learn very quickly how to spend your free time alone without feeling bored. Besides, you have to do a lot of things on your own or learn things yourself by trial and error. Often it means you spend much time reading and drawing, which is very good for self-development. Secondly, you build your character this way.
Speaker D
In my opinion, being an only child is not the best thing which can happen to you. Most of my friends have brothers and sisters but I’m the only child. And I find it hard to share things with anybody, or make friends, or start a conversation. I can’t say I feel bored without brothers or sisters but I do feel I lack some communication skills. There’re many other disadvantages about being an only child as well. It’s not enjoyable at all.
Speaker E
I’m the only child in the family and I find it really hard not because I have nobody to play with but because my parents expect too much. I have to do my best to study well, and my marks, and my behaviour must be perfect. My parents worry too much about me and it’s not bad maybe but it’s certainly not easy to be what your parents want you to be. It’s hard to live like that and always be perfect. My friends feel more comfortable with siblings.

Interviewer: I would like to thank you for taking part in our survey.
Respondent: That’s ok. We often carry out different surveys at school.
Interviewer: Do you go to school? What year are you in?
Respondent: I’m in Year eleven, unfortunately.
Interviewer: Why unfortunately? Is it because you don’t like the number ‘11’? Or because you have to take your exams this year?
Respondent: The latter. I have to take Science, a great problem for me.
Interviewer: When I was at school, I had problems with Maths and with PE. Respondent: PE? The best subject ever. We always play basketball in PE and I’m the captain of our basketball team.
Interviewer: Impressive! Do you do any other sport?
Respondent: No. We’ve got different clubs at school. Football, tennis and others, but to get results you need to focus on one thing. For me it’s basketball. I have no time for anything else. We practise five times a week, including Saturday and Sunday. I can only relax on Wednesday when we do not train and don’t have classes at school either.
Interviewer: What do you do on your day off?
Respondent: Practically nothing. I plan my week to leave Wednesday free. Our coach says it’s important to change type of activity. I just listen to music and hang around with friends.
Interviewer: Who encourage you to take sport so seriously?
Respondent: My cousin. He’s always been a sort of a role model for me. He speaks two foreign languages by the way, Italian and Spanish.
Interviewer: And you? What foreign languages do you speak?
Respondent: Only German. But I speak it almost fluently.
Interviewer: OK. German is a difficult language but, getting back to your cousin, do you spend lots of time together?
Respondent: Not really. We both are very busy. He goes to college and I as a sport he goes mountain biking.
Interviewer: Do you go mountain biking with him? On holiday, for instance.
Respondent: No, it’s too extreme but we go fishing on holiday. We both enjoy it.
Interviewer: Great! Any other holiday activities? Like sunbathing, for example? Or boating?
Respondent: Boating? No. We only use a boat when we go fishing.
Interviewer: I see and one more question if you don’t mind.

Susan: Yes, I followed your directions. Took bus 22 and got off at the stop City Centre, that’s it!
Mr. Brooks: Good.
Susan: The tutors said there used to be on a university campus but it was too far from the centre. Students staying with host families had problems getting there. So, they moved to the school.
Mr. Brooks: Which was clever of them! But the air is better in the suburbs, of course. In the city the traffic’s too heavy.
Susan: Oh, the windows of our classroom were closed because of the noise from the traffic.

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about jeans. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
I love wearing jeans so much! I wear them every single day. What I like most about jeans is that you can wear them almost anywhere and with almost anything. Moreover, they’re easy to wash. And you can put them in the washing machine and don’t even need to iron them. You get neither hot nor cold in them. They suit any occasion in fact. I don’t know a better item of clothing. Jeans are just a universal item of clothing.
Speaker B.
I think too many people these days wear jeans just everywhere, thinking it’s the most practical garment. Still, there’re a lot of occasions where jeans are just not good. Like going to school or to the cinema. Besides, if everybody wears jeans, it means that everybody looks the same. And it’s just not interesting. I honestly think it’s just so dull if you put on jeans when you can actually think of something more beautiful.
Speaker C.
As far as I know, jeans were originally meant for working people and were considered simple clothes because they’re easy to wash and very durable. That is why I don’t understand why now people think you can wear them anywhere. Jeans are certainly good if you go to the countryside but they’re inappropriate at the theatre or at school, anywhere where there’s a strict dress code. So you cannot just wear them on any occasion after all.
Speaker D.
I have ten pairs of jeans and my parents laugh at me because I can wear them almost anywhere. They think that all jeans look the same but they couldn’t be more wrong. Jeans come in any colour nowadays and they come in different styles too. There’re skinny and baggy jeans, jeans with embroidery and even beautiful beads, blue, white, grey and black jeans. I can go on and on. The list of jeans styles is really endless.
Speaker E.
I wear jeans sometimes, not to school, of course. As I consider it bad style for some reason. Still, even if they allowed that, I wouldn’t wear jeans to school or too often in general because I read that jeans can damage our blood circulation and become a reason of some illnesses. It is especially true for tight jeans, which are considered high fashion now. I think it’s a sufficient reason to avoid wearing jeans every day. Once a week is enough.

Respondent: Pardon?
Interviewer: We’re doing a survey and interviewing people randomly in the street.
Respondent: Oh, yeah! We also did that when we were in France on an exchange programme. It was a part of our course project.
Interviewer: You know then.
Respondent: Of course, I do. Go ahead, ask your questions.
Interviewer: You said you’d been to France. Do you speak French as a foreign language?
Respondent: Yes, I do. I speak it fluently, but still make some grammar mistakes.
Interviewer: Right, French is difficult. That’s why I chose Spanish when I was at school. Are you still at school or have you finished it?
Respondent: It’s my last year at school. I’m eighteen already.
Interviewer: Eighteen? Right. Anyway, as you’re still at school, I’ll ask you a question about your school life. What’s your favourite subject? I believe you like Art and Computer Design.
Respondent: Neither. I love Science. I’ve always loved it. And our Science teacher is great.
Interviewer: Lucky you. Is this subject somehow related to your future career?
Respondent: I don’t know yet because I haven’t made my career choice yet.
Interviewer: Don’t you know what you would like to do as a career?
Respondent: Well, I’ve always dreamt of being an actress and starring in films but...
Interviewer: Yes?
Respondent: I don’t have a gift for the stage. To put it frankly, I feel terrified when I have to act or even speak in public, which means acting is not for me.
Interviewer: I do understand your feelings. I feel the same.
Respondent: Everyone says I’ve got a nice voice. That’s true. And I love singing but only do it as a hobby.
Interviewer: Yeah, you hobby is singing. It’s not a common one. Most people of your age say they like reading or watching films. And what about sports? I would be surprised if you did karate or yoga.
Respondent: No, I do aerobics. Not very exciting, but I don’t have time for anything else at the moment.
Interviewer: To me aerobics sounds great. It is very good for the body as far as I know. And it can be great fun if you choose a right instructor.

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter:
Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about hobbies. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
When I was a small child, I loved collecting stamps. It was quite a typical hobby for a boy of my age, I guess. Now, I love taking photos of the places that I visit on my holidays. I also love sports like skateboarding and football. Maybe in the future, I'll take up something else and will enjoy another hobby. My parents say that it's okay to try several things in your life. And I agree with them. Anyway, nothing lasts forever, does it?
Speaker B.
A couple of years ago, I took part in a competition which was run by my school and designed a website for it. I won and got a check as a prize and thought I could go on doing it. Now I design web pages for my friends and small businesses in the local area. And it's much more than my pocket money could ever be. I don't want to connect my future profession with web design. It is just an additional source of income for me now.
Speaker C.
I do believe people actually waste too much time and money on their hobbies. Most hobbies don't help you to develop any essential skills. Some people like doing crosswords or puzzles, or draw, or collect things, but I don't see how it can help them with their future education or career. It's much better to spend time studying or helping parents. I think there are many useful things we can spend our time on.
Speaker D.
I've been fond of drawing my entire life. My parents thought it would change as I grew older, but they were wrong. I still attend art classes after school. I don't sell my pictures yet. I may give them as a present for somebody's birthday, or as a souvenir to remember me without asking any money for them. Still, I hope my future job will be connected with drawing and painting. I may teach it to kids, or become a designer. Why not?
Speaker E.
When my parents gave me my first computer, I was hooked and spent days and nights playing computer RPG games and surfing the net. It's no wonder that my school results were gradually becoming worse and worse. Finally, I failed a lot of tests in the middle of the term, which was something I hadn't expected. Then my parents explained to me that it was unacceptable and took the computer away. I had to improve my academic results to get it back.

Interviewer: You are saying you are not at school any longer?
Respondent: No, I'm 19. I've already finished school. Now I'm a university student.
Interviewer: Okay, you are 19. And I can register your occupation as a student, can't I?
Respondent: Yes, you can. I study full time, and I'm going to be an economist.
Interviewer: My cousin wanted to be an economist too, but then changed his mind and became a lawyer. He was not really good at mathematics.
Respondent: Actually, economics is not only about mathematics. To tell the truth, Maths has never been my favorite subject. Not even at school.
Interviewer: What was your favorite one then?
Respondent: I've always liked biology, but it has nothing to do with my future job, unfortunately.
Interviewer: Did you study biology at school?
Respondent: Yes. And we had a wonderful teacher.
Interviewer: Right. Okay. And what do you do in your free time?
Respondent: It depends. I like skiing, and I go to the swimming pool from time to time. And I play in a band.
Interviewer: Play in a band? Drums or keyboard?
Respondent: No, the guitar. And I perform as a vocalist sometimes, especially when we play Spanish songs.
Interviewer: Do you know Spanish?
Respondent: Yes, I speak it fluently. I learned it at school. And now go on with my studies at university too.
Interviewer: Would you like to learn any other foreign languages?
Respondent: I've been thinking about Chinese. It's very useful for business in the modern world. Lots of people speak it.
Interviewer: But it's too difficult to learn, isn't it?
Respondent: Yes. I don't think I would have managed to combine learning Chinese with my current studies and other commitments. Probably some other time in another life.

Mum: When I was at school, science was difficult for me, though I loved it. Jeff: You were top of the class in languages. And I'm hopeless at French. I've got the lowest grades. The grammar is messy and illogical.
Mum: It's complicated, right, but not messy. You need to read more in French and you'll like it.
Jeff: Probably. I got an A in computer technology, by the way.
Mum: Well done. You always get A's in it. Your teacher says you've got a gift for computers.

Ben: Any plans for tomorrow, Sue? I'm going to the swimming pool. How about joining me?
Sue: No, Ben, thank you. I've got a cold and the swimming pool is the last place I would like to go to.
Ben: Oh, sorry. I didn't know. Probably you should see the doctor tomorrow.
Sue: No, no need. It's not that serious. I just feel like staying at home tomorrow, watching a film, having tea with lemon. Just a lazy day.
Ben: Sounds tempting. Especially in weather like this. It's absolutely freezing outside. And will be worse tomorrow.
Sue: How about joining me?
Ben: Sorry. I can't miss my training sessions whatever the weather is like.

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about coffee. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
If you ask me, well, I can’t imagine my morning without a cup of strong coffee. It gives me the strength to get up. And even the smell of fresh coffee can improve my mood significantly. It gives me the drive for the entire day. I know some people consider drinking coffee unhealthy but, in my opinion, one cup will do me no harm, I believe. On the contrary, after a cup of good coffee I feel I have enough power to change the world for the better.
Speaker B.
I love coffee. When I shop for food, I always go to a small coffee stall in the supermarket and smell all the kinds of coffee the one can find there. There’s coffee with chocolate, coffee with different fruits, coffee with anything. There’s also green coffee and exotic expensive kinds of coffee as well. I would like to try all kinds of coffee, which they sell there, because they have coffee for any weather or occasion.
Speaker C.
Coffee is incredibly tasty and may be a good source of energy in the morning, but I don’t drink it. I’ve read that coffee makes your blood pressure high and can give you a strong headache. It can also cause problems with your stomach and some other illnesses as well. So, a cup of coffee in the morning is certainly tempting but, still, no, thank you. I avoid drinking coffee because I take care of my health, besides coffee is very expensive.
Speaker D.
I don’t know why many people think that coffee is unhealthy. Well, anything can be unhealthy if you eat or drink too much of it. Even fruits and vegetables can do you harm. However, doctors say that drinking coffee is actually good for you as it improves your mood and stimulates your body. They also believe that a cup of coffee a day helps prevent heart problems. That’s a good reason to drink coffee in reasonable quantities.
Speaker E.
I love coffee. Of course, I understand that drinking coffee has both pluses and minuses and can influence our body in different ways. Still, I think one cup of coffee in the morning is the must. But it must be really good coffee, which is certainly not cheap. High-quality coffee costs a fortune and must be bought in special shops, not in supermarkets. Various coffee flavours are nice, but flavours add to the cost of coffee itself as well.

Interviewer: Thank you for taking part in our survey! I promise it won’t take you long.
Respondent: It’s okay, I’ve got time. I’m waiting for my truck to be loaded and then I will set off.
Interviewer: Do you drive a truck?
Respondent: Yes, I’m a professional driver. And I’ve driven different vehicles from taxies to trucks.
Interviewer: It must be an interesting job, though a difficult one.
Respondent: Right! My parents wanted me to be an accountant but I chose driving and I have never regretted my choice. You’ll never believe how many countries I’ve seen.
Interviewer: And how many countries have you been to?
Respondent: Hmm... Let me count. Thirty. Yes, thirty.
Interviewer: It’s impressive.
Respondent: Yeah, I love being on the move, meeting new people, talking with them.
Interviewer: As you work internationally, do you speak any foreign languages? Spanish, probably? Or German?
Respondent: Neither of them, only French. I learned it at school and now practise it when I’m in the French-speaking countries. Foreign languages are not as important for my job as they may seem. People speak English almost everywhere, so there’s no need to be a polyglot.
Interviewer: I see. And did you go to school in Britain?
Respondent: Yes, in Oxford. My native city. I was born there and went to school there. I enjoyed living in Oxford but when I finished school, we moved to Manchester. I’m a Manchester United fan, of course.
Interviewer: I’m their fan too. And is it difficult to be on the move all the time? Do you always have proper meals?
Respondent: Yeah, sure. We need to eat proper food to be healthy. And we have medical check-ups very often. It’s believed that drivers drink lots of coffee.
Interviewer: Isn’t that true?
Respondent: No, it isn’t. My favourite drink, for example, is juice. I’ve always got a few cartons of juice in the portable fridge.
Interviewer: And what about exercising?
Respondent: Sure. I go swimming. I find it the most effective way to relax after a long drive. I used to play rugby but I was at school when I last played it.
Interviewer: Right! And a few more questions if you don’t mind!

Hi, everyone! I’d like to give you some advice on our hiking holiday. Tomorrow I’ll be waiting for you at the railway station at 8 a.m. It’s hot but, anyway, don’t go with bare legs. Our route goes through bushes and rocky hills. Wear comfortable jeans or sports trousers if you don’t want your legs to be scratched and mosquito bitten. Do not forget water but don’t take much food. We’ll be taking breaks at places equipped with barbeques where we can enjoy baked and grilled food.
Text B.
Hi, Steve! It’s Mary. I’ve already ordered a cherry-cake for mum’s birthday, so don’t worry about it. Now I’m in the shopping centre, looking for a present for mum from both of us. I’ve found nothing except a large indoor plant in a ceramic pot. At first, I wanted to buy her an umbrella but they all had an awful flower print, which I think she won’t like. And as for the green plant, she’s always liked things like that. If you agree, I’ll pay and order the delivery. Bye!
Text C.
Max: You’re always busy at weekends, Nancy. What’s wrong?
Nancy: Nothing, Max! I just have to help my mum in her vet clinic. They’re doing some renovations there.
Max: Oh, yeah! A small family business always requires time and effort. Are you going to work as a vet too, together with your mum?
Nancy: She’d be happy! My sister is allergic to cats, dogs and whatever. So, I’m mum’s only hope of taking over the clinic which she’s so proud of, but...
Max: Don’t tell me you don’t like animals.
Nancy: Of course, I do! But I’ve always dreamed of a career in professional sports, which can’t be combined with running a clinic!
Max: No, it can’t!

Alice: It’s almost lunchtime! Are you hungry, Ron?
Ron: No, Alice! Not really, but I wouldn’t mind some pancakes with strawberry jam!
Alice: I wouldn’t mind pancakes either! But sorry, we’ve got neither eggs nor milk to make them! What we can make is either spaghetti or sandwiches with ham and cheese.
Ron: You know what I’ll choose, don’t you?
Alice: Oh, yeah! I know that you’re happy to eat spaghetti three times a day! OK. I’ll have it too, so as not to cook anything else. Would you like your spaghetti with some sauce or with salad.
Ron: With tomato sauce, please.
Alice: It would be nice of you to help me set a table.

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about films and cinema. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
Don’t get me wrong! I love watching films on the big screen but the rest of the experience is pretty awful! Just imagine, you’re in the cinema, ready to see the film and someone next to you has a bag of popcorn or a bag of sweets, so they open it up, half-way through the film and to make things worse they start chewing loudly! That drives me mad! Or even worse they talk on their cellphones through the entire movie and start kicking the back of my chair accidently or otherwise.
Speaker B.
There’re different ways to choose a good film to watch. Personally, I always read the official reviews on the Internet. I believe the things that professional critics say about the plot, the acting and the shooting. If they say the film is worth seeing, I go and see it. Apart from that, I rely on my friends opinions, as our tastes in films are quite similar. They know what genres I like and which I don’t. In most cases these recommendations are more than enough for me.
Speaker C.
I am sure that it is one of the most celebrated films in the entire history of film-making, a great all-time classic! It has everything that makes it just fantastic: a talented director, a perfect cast, a great soundtrack, a touching story, you name it! The shooting and acting are superb! It’s not an epic, not a horror, but a drama that will suit most purest tastes. It’s absolutely essential to watch it at least once. Personally, I watch it every time I feel sad or disappointed. It just leaps up my mood!
Speaker D.
I’m a great cinema and film fan. However, there some genres I never watch. Like, I don’t watch horror films, they seem to be all about the scare factor and in most cases they do not have a good story or plot. You’ll never see me watching an action film either. They’re almost always the same. The good guys try to save the world. No special characters, nothing that makes me interested in the story, and I’m not interested in seeing fights and car races for hours and hours.
Speaker E.
I don’t like going to the cinema, I haven’t been there almost ten years. I don’t do well, sitting and doing one thing for an hour and a half. I don’t feel safe, plus, I can’t make myself pay for a ticket and spend that much money on snacks only to sit in the dark and focus on one thing! When I’m in my room or in the kitchen, I can do other things while I’m watching a movie, like having a snack or making dinner. Then I can pause it any time I need, so it’s really convenient.

Interviewer: First of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to take part in our survey! It’s really very important for us.
Respondent: My pleasure.
Interviewer: I see that you’ve just left the library. Do you often go there to borrow books?
Respondent: In fact I was in the library for a different reason. I work there. I’m a librarian.
Interviewer: So your job is a librarian? Okay. Have you ever worked in any other places?
Respondent: Of course! I’ve worked as a waitress, a secretary, an office manager and whatever. This is my twelfth job in fact.
Interviewer: You’ve already tried twelve different jobs! Fantastic!
Respondent: Yes! I enjoy trying new things and learning new skills!
Interviewer: Right! Can I ask you about foreign languages you speak?
Respondent: Of course! The language I learned in college was Chinese and I’m still learning it because you can never speak Chinese well enough.
Interviewer: Oh, it’s so difficult! Why didn’t you choose Spanish or German?
Respondent: I don’t know why! I just wanted to learn Chinese!
Interviewer: What’s your hobby? What do you do for pleasure? Do you like drawing or dancing?
Respondent: Hmm... No, I like travelling. It’s my real hobby and my favourite destination is China. I’ve been there several times and will go again! It’s an amazing country and you can see much more there if you speak their language.
Interviewer: Right! Chinese culture, art and music are very different from ours. Can you play any traditional musical instruments?
Respondent: Do you mean the Chinese bamboo flute? No, but I play the piano well enough. I took piano classes when I was at school and my teacher was very good. She taught me to feel and love music.
Interviewer: And what about sports? What do you do to keep fit?
Respondent: Hmm... I go jogging. I would like to go swimming but there’s no swimming pool nearby, so I jog almost every evening.
Interviewer: Evening?
Respondent: Yes, I prefer jogging in the evening, not in the morning like most people do. I hate getting up early, and evenings are better for me.

Mike: Oh, Linda! Yes, I’m fine! It’s my granddad who has got a problem. Severe pain in his stomach. The doctor’s examining him at the moment. And you?
Linda: I’m fine, too. I’m here with my cousin El. She is so afraid of dentists that she always skips her annual check-ups. However, now she cannot put off her visit to the dentist!
Mike: Does it hurt?
Linda: El says it does. Awfully. She was unable to sleep at night. My aunt called me in the morning and asked me to go with her.
Mike: To stop her from running away from the doctor?
Linda: Sort of.

Kate: Good idea, Fred! I’ve heard there’s a big aquarium in this city.
Fred: It’s near the port. Too far from the centre! We won’t have enough time to get there and pack. What I suggest is a guided walking tour in the historical centre.
Kate: It’s offered by the student’s centre, isn’t it? I wouldn’t mind it either. I’ll contact them today to reserve two places for us in the group. Shall I?
Fred: Yes, thank you! I also thought about a sea boat trip but everything’s reserved for a month ahead.

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter:
Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about studying a foreign language abroad. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
I learn Italian as a foreign language and last summer I went to Italy as an exchange student. I stayed with the host family, not in a student’s hostel and that was a great mistake! The people I stayed with were an elderly couple without children. They wanted me to spend all my free time with them and kept asking lots of questions. They didn’t want to accept the fact that I needed time to do my homework and to be on my own. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to stay with a host family.
Speaker B.
I spent last summer abroad as an exchange student in Germany. It was a great experience. I think I would return home an absolutely different person. I learned so much! I was staying with a host family and my hosts never treated me as a child but as a responsible person and I had to become responsible. I got used to coming home on time and not later than I have promised. I think I’ve become more independent and confident in myself and the choices I make.
Speaker C.
When I was getting ready for my trip abroad, the most important question for my parents was where I would stay. I wanted to choose a student’s hostel but my parents were against it and I went to a host family. It was the right choice. My hosts were a lovely couple with two kids. Signora Clara cooked fantastic pastas and pizzas! I have never tasted anything like it! And I loved her desserts, too! She used to say that it’s important to taste the country whose language you’re learning.
Speaker D.
Well, I thought I could speak Spanish pretty well before I went to Spain as a student. In the classroom everything was more or less fun but I couldn’t understand people on the streets. They were speaking very fast and pronounced words indistinctly, so I had to ask the same question several times before I was able to catch the answer. The locals also used words that they only use in that particular region. I haven’t seen them in my textbook.
Speaker E.
It was my parents’ idea to send me to France for the language course. I’d never left home for so long and I thought I would feel homesick and lonely but it was nothing like that. There was actually no time. From morning to 2 p.m. we had classes and then we went on excursions or trips or had other activities. Every other day we had contests or concerts and in the evenings there was time for parting and having fun. It was great and I never felt bored!

Interviewer: No, I don’t! It’s anonymous. All I need is your age.
Respondent: I’m thirty.
Interviewer: Right! Thirty! Do you work or study?
Respondent: I work, of course.
Interviewer: And what’s your job?
Respondent: I’m a firefighter.
Interviewer: Really? A firefighter who extinguishes flames?
Respondent: Yes, my job is to stop fire from burning.
Interviewer: You must be very brave!
Respondent: You know we often work with doctors and police officers, they are the real heroes.
Interviewer: Do you exercise a lot to be in shape?
Respondent: Yes, it’s part of my job!
Interviewer: And what sport do you like playing?
Respondent: Most of my colleagues enjoy football but I don’t like it very much. My favourite sport is skiing and I go skiing quite regularly, that’s why I usually have vacations in winter, not in summer.
Interviewer: I see.
Respondent: Skiing is a very popular sport in my native country.
Interviewer: And you are from...?
Respondent: From Canada. Children start going skiing at a very early age there. There’s lots of snow in winter and they’re out having fun.
Interviewer: Right! When did you leave Canada?
Respondent: When I was sixteen. First, we moved to Austria and then to America. It was not easy to get used to new places and new people. I missed my old friends a lot.
Interviewer: I see. And what about music? Have you got any preferences? How do you feel about modern pop-music?
Respondent: I hate pop-music and never listen to it. I listen to rock. There’s something in rock music which makes me feel alive.
Interviewer: And a hobby?
Respondent: I don’t know. When I was small, I assembled Lego and drew a lot and now... Reading, probably. You may not believe it, but when I start reading a good book, I can’t stop and I keep it reading up to the end. Sometimes the whole night through.

Seller: Definitely. Your niece and her friends will have a lot of fun, playing them. It’s a good way to keep kids away from their phones and tablets. And also have a look at this painting set. It has several colouring books.
Ron: No, no. A painting set is what her parents always buy her. She’s got dozens. I’ll take this board game. Does it really keep them away from tablets?

Sam: And I can understand why. Most girls play the piano, violin or sometimes the guitar. It’s sort of a conventional joys.
Emma: Right!

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter:
Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about photography and taking photos. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
A new photo exhibition starts at our school on Monday and will last till the end of the month. It's called 'Life on Campus', which means that any photos that show our school life are welcome. And I encourage my students to take part in it. I think it’s a great opportunity for them to remember and share some funny and memorable moments of their school life. They are welcome to display portraits, classroom scenes, pictures from our off-campus trips and out of class activities and what not.
Speaker B.
If you’re not a professional photographer, I don’t think you should go for an expensive camera. I know there are several brands you can buy cheap and they will take very good pictures. Don't look for lots of functions. For beginners, most of those features are not important. The main thing is, it should be easy to use, maybe have a nice design and be rather light to carry. I guess these things are important for a beginner photographer. Have a look and decide what is best for you.
Speaker C.
Well, I’m not a professional photographer, but I love taking pictures. Actually, I don’t like interior scenes, I prefer nature and especially the streets. Practicing street photography has helped me change my perspective. I think I’ve become more observant. I walk a lot and walk to places I have never been to. I can see beauty in many things I never noticed before. You can sense a story in everything you find out. This is what I like about it.
Speaker D.
It’s not easy to become a good photographer. The quickest way to get some basic knowledge is to take a short course for young photographers. This will give you a good idea of how to use your camera. What could be better than listening to photography experts? You’ll learn more in an hour than from reading any special books. The next step will be to go out with a camera and take pictures, just as many pictures as possible. At least, that's the way I did it.
Speaker E.
Moments happen all the time and they can happen fast. As I see it, photography freezes these moments so we can take the time to enjoy them. Being a photographer, I have the ability to show myself and share my ideas through images. When someone looks at one of my photos, they are able to see something exactly the way I saw it. Photography can convey ideas in a very artistic, visual and creative way. My way.

Respondent: OK.
Interviewer: But I need to write down your age if you don’t mind.
Respondent: No, I don’t. I’m thirteen.
Interviewer: Fine. Thirteen. You are on your bike and your friends are too. Does this mean you do cycling as a sport?
Respondent: Yes. We train a lot and we often take part in cycling races.
Interviewer: It’s not easy, I understand.
Respondent: No, it isn’t. But sport is sport. My sister plays tennis and that’s also very demanding.
Interviewer: Right. Do you stick to any diet? I think all athletes should eat eggs, meat and milk products. Is this correct?
Respondent: Not exactly. The coach gives us some advice, of course, on what to eat but I usually eat whatever I like.
Interviewer: And your favourite food is ...?
Respondent: Hamburgers. I know that it’s not an ideal food for me but I can’t help it. Hamburgers are what I really like.
Interviewer: OK. And you go to the local school, right? Are you a native of this town? I mean were you born here?
Respondent: No. I was born in France, but then my parents moved to Britain. It was because of my father’s job. He is a scientist. A biologist, to be exact.
Interviewer: Are you missing France?
Respondent: No. Not at all. I was very small when we left and I don’t remember it much. I like it here. I’ve got lots of friends.
Interviewer: That’s fine. What do you want to be in the future? Have you thought about a career yet?
Respondent: Yes. My dream is to be a coach. I love sports and I love being with people. My parents want me to study biology, but I think a career as a coach is ideal for me.
Interviewer: Very reasonable. And you’ve got some pets, haven’t you?
Respondent: Well, I would like to have a dog, of course, but my parents won’t let me. All they agreed on was a goldfish.

Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about families. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
Our family is not large, but we spend lots of time together. Unlike most families, we don’t only get together in the evening and at weekends, but we see each other a lot during the daytime in our family bakery. It’s a family business. It was set up by my grandfather and now my parents run it. My granddad is still in charge of all the accounting matters. I help in the bakery shop and my brother delivers fresh bread and buns to our regular customers.
Speaker B.
I have three siblings, which makes four kids in the family all in all. That means plenty of housework, especially for Mum. She usually does most of the shopping, and we try to help her with the cleaning, at least with keeping our rooms clean. As the oldest sister, I also try to look after the younger ones. Dad always washes the dishes and often helps Mum with cooking, which is his hobby, by the way. Doing things together really helps us have more time for each other.
Speaker C.
I have ten siblings and dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, you name it. We now all live in different places and even countries. However, we have no problem keeping in touch. We regularly call each other, text, send emails and photos so we can keep up with life events. I even send cards and letters in the old-fashioned way. We also try to get together as often as possible – usually for big family events where the majority of us will show up.
Speaker D.
My sister and I are twins, and people think we should be inseparable because they believe we are very much alike. Well, partially, that’s true. We spend a lot of time together. We do look very much alike, but we are very different in character. She is very calm and relaxed, while I am bubbly and very emotional. She is very ladylike and wears nice dresses. And my all-time favourites are jeans and sneakers. Despite this we get along really well and never quarrel.
Speaker E.
I enjoy it greatly when our family gets together. It doesn’t happen very often, unfortunately, because we live in different cities and everyone is always so busy. But there is a day when we put off all our other plans and come to our grandparents’ house for a special party. We all look forward to this day. We exchange news, discuss our plans, chat and enjoy the most delicious cake our grandmother makes for this day. It’s huge and everyone takes a piece of it.

Interviewer: Thank you for taking part in our survey. It won’t take us long.
Respondent: It’s OK. I’ve got time at the moment.
Interviewer: Are you on holiday?
Respondent: No. I work as a waitress in the café over there. But my shift starts in an hour.
Interviewer: Do you like your job?
Respondent: I don't mind it. It’s nice to communicate with people. And I like it very much when children come to our cafe. Anyway, it’s only a temporary job before I decide what career to choose.
Interviewer: I see.
Respondent: My mum wants me to be a doctor, and dad insists on studying law. Anyway, I still have time to consider all the opportunities and choose the best one. Interviewer: And how old are you?
Respondent: Nineteen.
Interviewer: Ok. Nineteen. It means you finished school not long ago. What was your favourite subject there?
Respondent: Literature. I’ve always liked it and I’ve always been good at it. Our teacher once told me that my essays were very good and that I should probably do some writing professionally.
Interviewer: Sounds interesting. And what subject did you like least?
Respondent: Computer Studies. I never understood how to program and code.
Interviewer: And what about foreign languages? Do you speak any?
Respondent: Yes. I speak Italian. I also wanted to learn French but there wasn’t a French group in our school. And as for Italian, I speak it fluently.
Interviewer: I like Italian too. It sounds beautiful, like music.
Respondent: Right.
Interviewer: In the context of music, do you play any musical instruments?
Respondent: Yes, I play the violin.
Interviewer: Violin?
Respondent: Yes. It was my mother’s choice, actually. But I liked it eventually. Now my sister and I often take part in our local community concerts. She plays the flute and I play the violin.
Interviewer: Fantastic!
Respondent: Yeah. And our parrot likes it when we play at home. He even tries to imitate the tunes.
Interviewer: Your pet? Oh, a parrot is such an amusing pet bird! Is it the only pet in your family?
Respondent: Yes. My sister has always wanted to adopt a guinea pig but she’s allergic to them.
Interviewer: I see and one more question if you don’t mind.

Dear students! We are very glad that you’ve chosen our summer language school, and we’ll do our best to make your time here pleasant and useful. Apart from English classes, which are held every day of the week, including Saturdays and Sundays, you can join our Spanish club. The Spanish Club welcomes you every Friday from 6 till 9 pm. Everyone can take part in these weekly sessions. Our teachers will arrange the activities in groups of different levels.
Text B.
Hi, mum! I can’t wait to tell you the news! Just listen! Your daughter Lucy Brown has won the Space Research Contest for schoolchildren and has been awarded first prize, which is a telescope! Now we will all be able to enjoy the night sky from home! It’s much more interesting than going to the planetarium. The telescope is not large. In fact, it’s an amateur version. I saw the same one on a TV show on the educational channel. See you at home! We’re celebrating today, aren’t we?
Text C.
Ann: Do you like our town, Tim?
Tim: Yes, Ann. It’s nice and quiet. Have you always lived here?
Ann: Yes, I have hardly ever left it. It’s nice. You’re right! Especially the orchard garden next to the river. I go there when I feel sad or happy.
Tim: Sounds like you really like it.
Ann: Yes, it’s a special place for me.
Tim: Look, could you show me a bit of your town? I’d like to see the Old Tower in the centre.
Ann: It’s a museum now not really interesting.
Tim: Anyway, and the main pedestrian street with all its crafts shops. I’d like to buy some souvenirs there. And that wonderful garden of yours, of course.
Text D.
Sam: Hi, Lucy! I didn’t know you’re back from holiday.
Lucy: Oh, Sam! We returned yesterday! Our flight was delayed by five hours! Can you imagine that?
Sam: Yes, I can. Delays and crowds in the airport are the reasons why we prefer cars to planes. We’re going to the seaside on Friday by car, of course.
Lucy: Right! The cars are convenient in many ways!
Sam: We also need to take lots of luggage, including diving masks, flippers and my surfboard. The car will hold all of that.
Lucy: Looks like it’s going to be a great holiday! Send me photos, will you? Now I need to be off for the train station! My granny is arriving on this 6 o’clock train.

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about sport. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
I’m not athletic at all though I used to go swimming. Now I just do it for fun and for exercise, and it seems boring to me as a spectator. However, if there’s a football match on, here I am in front of the screen afraid to miss a minute of it. I don’t play it but it doesn’t really matter. I do my best not to miss a single match. Quite often, my friends and I go to the stadium to support Liverpool, my all-time favourite team. We always wear our red scarves and sing the team songs.
Speaker B.
Swimming has been something that I have done all my life. And also, a bit of water polo and diving. All these are really good sports! However, now I’d like to do something more exciting, that I haven’t done before. And surfing is at the top of my list. It’s quite challenging, I know. I’ll need to learn a lot and it’s not going to be easy like anything you do for the first time, but I’m ready to have a goal. If you want to do something very much, I think you should try it.
Speaker C.
I’ve been playing football and volleyball since high school. I used to be very shy and reserved but these games helped to greatly improve my social skills. The thing is when playing together, you have to interact and get along with other members of the group. Everybody wants to win, so all members have to cooperate with one another to achieve the common goal of winning. That is something that you cannot learn from an individual sport.
Speaker D.
I first tried diving only a year ago, but now I’m really into it. It’s amazing to experience the underwater world, so different from ours and truly wonderful. Diving looks simple, however, it’s not as easy and safe as it looks. The sudden loss of oxygen is probably the biggest threat. It’s also dangerous to rise quickly to the surface or just dive in the unfamiliar place. However, with proper precautions diving can open up a whole new world far from the stresses of daily life.
Speaker E.
I reckon all athletes are real-life superheroes. We look at these super people and admire the types of things they can do with their bodies that ordinary people can’t. They look great. They can do amazing things, and you want to look sort of the same and follow their example. Many athletes show incredible determination in their everyday lives. This serves as inspiration to young people or at least they can motivate you to finally join a gym and never miss workouts.

Interviewer: Thank you for taking part in our survey. I really appreciate it.
Respondent: I’m glad to help! Are you doing it for a research project?
Interviewer: Yes, it’s a part of out university course.
Respondent: I understand. Go ahead! What would you like to ask about?
Interviewer: First, I need to write down your age, if you don’t mind.
Respondent: No, I don’t. I’m forty.
Interviewer: Right. Forty. What’s your occupation? Do you work?
Respondent: Yes, I’m a nurse. I work in a hospital.
Interviewer: It’s a very important job and a difficult one.
Respondent: Yes, it’s not easy but I like it. My father is a surgeon. A really good one. When I was at school, I often went to his hospital and I decided to be a nurse. It feels good to help people.
Interviewer: Right! And the next question is about you eating habits. What food do you usually prefer?
Respondent: Oh, I’m not very particular about food. I eat everything! The only thing I cannot do without is chocolate. I always have chocolate for dessert though there’s a wide choice of different desserts in our café from fruit salads to all sorts of cakes and pies.
Interviewer: I see. You should have been born in Belgium where chocolate is very popular.
Respondent: But I was born in Australia and, to tell you the truth, I’m missing my native country. It’s nature and people. I can’t go there often, it’s too far away!
Interviewer: I understand. Australian people usually enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities. Windsurfing is extremely popular, isn’t it?
Respondent: Yes, it is. But I’ve never gone surfing. The best holiday activity for me is camping.
Interviewer: Is it?
Respondent: Yes, my colleagues and I often go camping. It’s fun a great recreational activity. I feel like a new person after our camping trips.
Interviewer: And what else do you do when you have free time? Do you enjoy cooking or assembling puzzles?
Respondent: No, I don’t. As for my hobby, I’d say it’s painting. I don’t paint very often but I like it. I’ve just started to work with watercolours. The technique is new to me but it’s amazing!
Interviewer: OK. Thank you! One more question...

Unfortunately, the swimming pool cannot be used for two more weeks until the renovation works are completed. However, you may take horse riding lessons from three to 08:00 p.m.. Hi, Jeff, it's Thomas. What's the score? I've heard that our team has won the first half. Is that true? I'm so sorry I can't be with you at the moment. So unlucky that the football match and my swimming competition happened to be at the same time. I'm doing well and my coach is happy with the result. But our competition is not over yet. As soon as it is, I'll rush to the stadium. Don't know how long it will take me. The traffic is heavy. There may be traffic jams.

Speaker 2: A cup of green tea and a vanilla cake. Right. Oh, sorry. There isn't any left, I'm afraid. We've got an apple pie and a chocolate cake.
Speaker 1: Chocolate cake, then. Do you serve it with ice-cream?
Speaker 2: Yes, with ice-cream and walnuts.
Speaker 1: It sounds delicious. Yes, I will take it.
Speaker 2: Green tea and a piece of chocolate cake.
Speaker 1: Wait a moment. What was the other option you said?
Speaker 2: Apple pie with honey syrup.
Speaker 1: Which I am allergic to.
Speaker 2: Should I change the chocolate cake for an apple pie?
Speaker 1: No,no. Leave it as it is.

Speaker 2: Oh, I've wanted so many things. Is it a headphone set or a ski glasses or a smart watch?
Speaker 1: Very close. It's one of those three things. You told me you were going for a ski holiday soon, didn't you? Open the box.
Speaker 2: Oh! The glasses with high UV protection! Let me try them on.
Speaker 1: Ah, they will look great with your ski suit and helmet. But ridiculous with your smart dress.

Now we are ready to start.
Good afternoon. Today we have asked five people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about visiting museums. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
When I have free time, I don't like staying at home. I enjoy visiting different interesting places and learning new things about history, art, science or whatever. And I love going on excursions to museums. First of all, I can easily buy a ticket online and avoid the queues. Besides, many museums today offer interactive exhibitions which are really amazing. I know that some of them offer 3D tours to their visitors. They really bring the past to life.
Speaker B.
I'm not an art lover and I prefer riding bikes or trekking to museums and excursions. However, last Saturday we had a very nice trip to a nearby town. I was amazed by its beauty and history. I had no idea there were so many historical places there. We went there by bus and on the way the guide told us some facts and amazing legends about the town. Then we visited the local history museum. I really didn't imagine that I would like it so much.
Speaker C.
When our teacher announces an excursion to a museum, I try to escape it at all costs. I don't like museums probably because my mum is a tour guide. When I was little, I spent too much time in museums. Mum took me there every time she had an excursion. I was too little for fine art or historical artifacts. I wanted to play or ride a bike, but not to admire the exhibits. So now I find museums and excursions monotonous and uninteresting.
Speaker D.
I think people should visit museums to gain knowledge in a particular sphere you use. Remember the things you see better than when you just read about them. For example, visiting the Egyptian Museum with its wonderful statues and pictures of pyramids, you can learn a lot of interesting facts about the country's ancient culture. This will definitely broaden your knowledge. When you visit a museum, you can gather the information you are interested in.
Speaker E.
I enjoy visiting different museums, but the problem is that there are no museums or galleries in our little town. I'm not the only person living in a remote place. I suggest we arrange a global Internet based museum. All the existing museums would make virtual expositions, and every one would have access to whatever museum they wanted and could order virtual excursions for themselves. There would be no need to travel far.

Interviewer: Thank you for taking part in our survey. I appreciate it.
Respondent: Oh, I find it amusing. Sounds like a game.
Interviewer: You are a school student, aren't you?
Respondent: Yes, but now we are on holidays.
Interviewer: Anyway, there's a question about your school. What subject do you find the most difficult?
Respondent: Well, art and design is the easiest and most pleasant, of course. And the most difficult one, I believe it's geography.
Interviewer: Why geography?
Respondent: Because I can never remember all those geographical names and where to look for them on the map. But when I travel and see places myself, I never forget their names afterwards.
Interviewer: Indeed. And what do you like to do when you travel?
Respondent: I like taking photos. Photography is my hobby, and I'm good at it. Interviewer: And do you like reading?
Respondent: It's not my favorite pastime, to be honest, but I can read very fast. Interviewer: Really? How many books have you read this summer?
Respondent: Well, do we count all of them, thick and thin ones?
Interviewer: Yes.
Respondent: In that, I guess, 18.
Interviewer: 18? Unbelievable. And what languages do you speak?
Respondent: I speak Spanish. It's easy because my grandparents live in Spain. And I can practice when I visit them. I would like to enrol on a Japanese language course, but not now, sometime later.
Interviewer: I see. And sports? Do you play any?
Respondent: I play volleyball, if it counts.
Interviewer: Volleyball certainly counts. It's an effective sports activity. I also played volleyball and football at school.
Respondent: My dad is a football fan, but I'm not. I don't support any club. Interviewer: And we are a family of football fans. I remember that when I played for our local team, my whole family, including our dog, came to the stadium to support me.
Respondent: Did they?
Interviewer: Yes, but let's get back to our survey. Have you got any pets? Respondent: No, I haven't. I would like to have a horse, but Mum says it's an absolutely unrealistic idea. Never mind. I'll buy a horse myself when I grow up. Interviewer: Thank you. One more question.

B: It’s just a book fare but it’s the first time we have ever had an event like this in our town, except for the folk music last May.

B: I have heard, that there is fiction, artbooks, business literature, and books for children. It would be introducing the books. Ron Smith is going to present his book on marathons, he is taking part in.
A: Why not see it. Where can we buy the entrance ticket.
B: No need. It’s free.

А: Wow, I don’t remember the last time I received a paper card. Probably never. What do you want me to do? Print the card?
B: No, my German is not just good enough for writing Birthday wishes. Could you help me with it?
A: Ok. Let’s meet up in the design room after classes, it will take a few minutes to write the wishes.
B: Thanx!

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about ecological problems. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
In my school grounds littering has become a real problem: papers, wrappers, cans and all sorts of rubbish were everywhere. I had a teacher has reacted by stopping afterschool activities for all students. I don’t think this is right. I feel that students who have nothing to do with a problem should not suffer. Why should I be responsible for someone else’s actions. Only those who leave rubbish on school grounds should be punished. Not every single student.
Speaker B.
It is a fact, that in my school most students don’t know that littering on school grounds is harming the planet. I feel the school should explain to them that littering is very bad for the environment. There could be some reports and programs on the school radio station as well as articles on school student blog. If the students know what rubbish does to the planet, I’m sure they will stop littering, they’ll know how harmful it is for nature.
Speaker C.
It all started last week. Our teacher explained to us: it’s a new program to promote a healthy environment. It’s called ‘Litter-free lunches’. The idea is to develop a different attitude to lunch boxes. We should all start using reusable containers, such as plastic food containers and water bottles instead of paper cups. It is an effort to reduce amount of littering in our school. We are wondering if it will work. It’s also new or unusual to us. We will have to get used to it.
Speaker D.
People all over the world understand how much harm litter does to the planet. However, in my town things are different. The citizens don’t even know what they are littering. Everywhere I walk there is trash on the side of the road. In the streets there are cardboard boxes, used caps and plastic bags. I feel very sad that nobody is trying to do anything about it. I believe young people should join together and do something to save our town. As everyone is in charge of our planet future. I am sure we are able to do it.
Speaker E.
People who litter streets, parks and playgrounds demonstrate their disrespect to other people. I believe, they should be punished for this. And the punishment should be serious. For example, if someone throw plastic cups or biscuits frappes or whatever on the ground, they should pay a fine for it. Alternatively, they should be made to do some cleaning and I’m sure that when this is done the situation will improve.

Interviewer: I’m glad you find some time to talk to me. The survey that you have long promise.
Respondent: Fine.
Interviewer: The first question is about your job, what do you do for a living.
Respondent: I’m a designer.
Interviewer: Designer. Sounds exciting! Do you use a computer in your work?
Respondent: Of course, I do, it is my, it is my essential tool.
Interviewer: Do you work online or offline? And how many do spend online per week?
Respondent: Well, we work mainly online, because we mainly work on projects as a team: designers, IT-specialists, marketologists altogether. It is difficult to say the exact number of hours, but generally it’s thirty hours per week.
Interviewer: I see, approximately thirty hours, right. Do you play any sport to keep feet?
Respondent: Yes, it’s absolutely necessary, an essential part of my daily routine. I like swimming but I can’t do it, because there is no swimming pool nearby. So, I play badminton. My neighbor likes badminton too. We can play almost every day, in park or in sport center, if the weather is not ok.
Interviewer: Right, thank you and a question about your origin, if you permeate. What were you born?
Respondent: In Greece, I still have lots of relatives there. But my parents and two brothers living in Britain. We all often go to Greece on holidays of course.
Interviewer: Ehh Greece... Legends and music, do you like Greece country music by the way.
Respondent: No, not really. To tell you the truth, I prefer classical music to anything else. Mozart is my favorite, composer. While I’m working, the music is playing softly in the background. It boosts my creativity.
Interviewer: Yeah, lots of creative people like classical music. And do you have any pets at home? The question may sound a bit out of line, but...
Respondent: No, no. It’s OK. I’ve got some unconventional pet.
Interviewer: Which means it is neither a cat nor a dog.
Respondent: Exactly, it’s a rabbit, a small white rabbit, very fluffy and cute. It sleeps in its cage but when it is awake it takes walks all around the house.

Ken: No! I did some boxing years ago but that sport is not for me.
Sue: It looks cruel to me though some people find it exciting.
Ken: Right.
Sue: And what’s the glove for then?

Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about homemade food and cooking at home. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
I’ve always enjoyed homemade dishes and I want my family to eat tasty and healthy food. To me, cooking is an art and I always follow the same rules when I cook. First, I turn on my favourite music. Then I prepare all the ingredients I need to make the dish and display them on the table. After that, I start cooking and I hate being interrupted by telephone calls. When the dish is ready, I always decorate it with pieces of vegetables or dried fruit - depending on the dish.
Speaker B.
I love cooking with mum. We talk and laugh a lot together. We are spending quality time together, catch up on each other's lives, share stories and create lasting memories. Trying out new recipes and experimenting with different flavors can be an exciting adventure. Cooking family recipes passed down through generations help preserve cultural traditions and create a sense of belonging. It allows younger family members to connect with their heritage and appreciate their roots.
Speaker C.
I don’t like hamburgers, hot dogs or chips much. And I strongly believe that soups, salads, chops and vegetables are always much better at home than in a café or a cafeteria. When you cook for yourself, you can be sure that the ingredients you use are fresh. Another good thing is that you can add as much salt, pepper or sugar as you want, to your taste, not to the taste of other people. Besides, it’s just cheaper and always much tastier. Personally, I just love it!
Speaker D.
Fast food is unhealthy, we all know that. It contains lots of fats, sugar and too many calories. But there is sugar in lots of other foods we eat every day. And in most cases we don’t realize how much sugar these dishes have. Take fruit yogurt, for example, even a fat free one. You may be shocked at the amount of sugar it has. So, cooking proper dishes at home is always the best choice. Besides, you don’t feel hungry after a good meal.
Speaker E.
I don’t like cooking at home as it takes too much time and effort. With the right restaurant, everyone with their eating restrictions can choose from the many options a menu has to offer. At home, it is hard to please everyone with food, and in a restaurant, the pressure is taken off of you and you can enjoy each other’s company instead. Besides, I believe eating out gives a welcome change to female members of any family because cooking every day can be hard and boring.

Interviewer: Do you mind answering a few questions? It’s for a survey we are doing.
Respondent: No, problem. Ask your questions.
Interviewer: In fact, one of my questions is about pets, but it looks like there’s no need to ask it. The dog is your pet, isn’t it?
Respondent: Yes. I adopted him when he was a small puppy. Now he’s a big dog. He’s friendly, don’t be afraid of him.
Interviewer: I’m not afraid but still... you know, I’ve never had any pets except for goldfish. Anyway. My next question is whether you’ve already chosen your future career or not.
Respondent: Not yet. In fact, I’ve always wanted to be a pilot. It’s been my dream since childhood.
Interviewer: And?
Respondent: It’s very unlikely that it’ll ever come true. I’ve got a problem with my eyes. I’m short sighted and a pilot should have perfect health. Now, my parents want me to be a lawyer but I’m not sure I want to study law.
Interviewer: Oh, yes. I understand.
Respondent: I’ve probably got the health problem because I usually spend too much time on my computer and other gadgets.
Interviewer: How many hours, on average, do you spend online per week? Respondent: Fifteen. Yes, I think fifteen on average. The doctor says I shouldn’t make it any more.
Interviewer: I see. And do you speak any foreign languages?
Respondent: I speak Russian but not very fluently yet.
Interviewer: Russian? But why? It’s a difficult language. Most people choose Spanish or Italian.
Respondent: Oh, yes, it’s not easy. I chose it because I’m interested in Russian literature and culture.
Interviewer: And Russian food? People say there are some very unusual dishes in Russian cuisine, like pelmeni or something.
Respondent: I’m not an expert in Russian food, but my favourite food is fish. I can even cook fish myself.
Interviewer: Oh, I see. And sports? Do you play any?
Respondent: Of course. I go skateboarding with friends. There are skateboarding facilities in front of our block and we’ve got plenty of opportunity to practice. My dad promised to teach me windsurfing next summer. But I need to learn to swim first.
Interviewer: Thank you for your time but I have got a few more questions if you don’t mind.

Text A
Dear friends! On Saturday, you’ll have an opportunity to see an authentic village of the 16th century. It’s like an open-air museum: houses of those times, people wearing traditional costumes and performing folk music and dancing. You’ll have the impression you’ve gone into the past in a time machine. This place is often used for making historical films when they shoot the scenes of everyday life in the countryside. The school bus will get us there at 9am and bring us back by 10pm.
Text B
Hi, Mum! I’m going to be late - we are getting ready for our school culinary show. And I’m taking part with your recipe ... a cherry pie. Anyway, I have to ask you a favour. My friend, Anna, is going to come today. I’ve promised her a book about pet birds. She’s got a small parrot as a present but she doesn’t even know what to feed it with. So, she’s desperate to get the book as soon as possible. Could you give it to her, please? It’s on the shelf above my table. Love you!
Text C
Ben: Hi, Amy! Where were you in the morning?
Amy: Look, Ben. I was late for the first class.
Ben: What happened? I bet you didn’t hear your alarm clock, did you?
Amy: No. It was much more stupid. For some reason I thought it was Friday today, not Thursday!
Ben: Did you? Really?
Amy: I went to the second class, according to Friday’s timetable.
Ben: Sounds unbelievable.
Amy: And it happens all the time! I mean I’m always confusing and forgetting things.
Last week I missed an appointment with my doctor because I completely forgot about it!
Ben: Let’s go to the classroom. Otherwise you risk missing one more lesson.
Text D
Alan: Are you joining us for the camping holiday, Lisa?
Lisa: No. Unfortunately not. I’m taking part in the cycling ride. I can’t let down the team.
Alan: Of course you can’t. I wish your cycling club success. By the way, don’t you have a spare backpack? Mine’s torn apart and I won’t have time to buy a new one till Saturday.
Lisa: Yes, you can take my rucksack. Do you remember my green one with lots of pockets? It’s big enough and very strong. I can also give you a tent if you want.
Alan: No-no! We’ve got enough tents. And I’m really grateful for the rucksack. It’ll save me lots of time. Let me know if you need anything.
Lisa: OK. I will.

Script 1.2
Now we are ready to start.
Presenter: Good afternoon. Today we have asked 5 people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about school uniforms. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A.
In my country, most children wear uniforms at school. Uniforms are so common that students don’t think much about them. You just wear it and that is it. An average uniform includes jackets, blouses and dresses, shirts and skirts, trousers and maybe shorts. There are also jumpers and polo shirts. The colours, patterns and logos on blazers and ties can be different, but most other things are pretty similar. I think we are all just used to wearing uniforms.
Speaker B.
Wherever I go, I want to look nice and appropriate. Usually it takes me a lot of time and effort to decide what to wear and to choose clothes that go with each other. Luckily, I don't have this problem every morning: my school has a uniform. And I don’t waste time choosing what to put on. I know exactly what I’m wearing before I get out of the door. School is not a fashion show. We need to concentrate on learning, not on what we’re wearing.
Speaker C.
I know many people say uniforms make us all look alike. But I believe you can always find a way to express and show your individuality. My school has a uniform but I can choose and mix uniform items every day. And every day I won’t look the same. I can also wear my hair in different styles or wear different glasses. Besides, I can express myself by other means such as academic success or being a good friend or an interesting person to talk to.
Speaker D.
Now, let me tell you that school uniforms can be ideal if they meet certain requirements. First, they shouldn’t be expensive but should be comfortable to wear. Besides, a school uniform should consist of a number of items so that you can mix and match them every day. Then, it should not be identified with any particular school. So if you change school, you don’t have to buy a new wardrobe. And most importantly, it should be something that you can wear outside school.
Speaker E.
At school we have hard rules about the uniform. It means you can’t change anything in it. We can only wear the uniform in the school colours and with a school logo. I can’t even wear shoes of a different colour. And we actually have a number of uniforms. I wear one every day, then there’s a special uniform for PE classes, and another one for special occasions and events. That means lots of clothes and regulations to wear them, which is sometimes really difficult!

Now we are ready to start.
Interviewer: Do you mind if I ask you a few questions? We are doing a survey. Respondent: No, I don’t mind. We do surveys at school too. In Social Studies and in other classes as well.
Interviewer: And what’s your favourite subject?
Respondent: Science. I like learning new things about the world around me. Interviewer: Science. Right. If you like exploring the world, you probably like travelling, don’t you?
Respondent: Oh yes, I do.
Interviewer: Where would you like to go if you had a choice? What would be your dream destination?
Respondent: For holidays? And can I go wherever I want?
Interviewer: Yes. Anywhere - from Hanoi to Paris.
Respondent: Well ... to Moscow. Neither me nor any one of my friends has ever been there. I’m curious about that city.
Interviewer: Right. Now a question from another area. What do you usually eat?
Respondent: I eat neither meat nor fish. I’m a vegetarian. That’s why vegetables are my essential food. Fresh, fried, boiled - I like them cooked in different ways.
Interviewer: I see. I tried to be a vegetarian a year ago but it didn’t last long. Respondent: It may be difficult at the beginning, but then it feels ok. Our neighbour, who is a mountain biker, finds a vegetarian diet appropriate for himself.
Interviewer: A mountain biker? Amazing! And do you play sports? You look very fit. What do you do to exercise?
Respondent: Nothing special. We play volleyball a lot - in the school ground, in the yard and on the beach. It’s a great game.
Interviewer: I agree. I like volleyball too. Would you like to be a coach or a PE teacher in the future? Do you think your career may be related to sports?
Respondent: I doubt it. I would like to be an artist. I like creating things and I often design gifts for my friends. Mum says my pictures are good. She even helped me to make a webpage where my works are displayed.
Interviewer: Do people get interested?
Respondent: Yes. I have eighty followers there. We’ve got a closed group where we can display our works, discuss painting techniques and share opinions.
Interviewer: It looks like a very professional approach. Eighty followers is a good start.

Dear visitors! We’re doing our best to make our park a nice place for everyone. Please, be aware that you can borrow a bike for free. To the right of the main entrance you’ll see a large glass house in which you can find out what life in the tropics feels like. The greenhouse is inhabited by nearly a thousand butterflies, which you can see for only £5. Children under sixteen have discounts. Don’t miss a chance to see our free exhibition of retro photos of the city in the central alley.

Hi, dad. I want to share some news. You wanted me to take a French course, so I did that. I was at the language school and took a test for the level. The test didn’t take me long. I know nothing, and, of course, they defined my level as a beginner. And placed me into the lowest group but in that group I saw Paul, my old friend from primary school. We both were very glad to meet up again after so many years. I believe taking a language course with Paul will be real fun, won’t you?
Text C
Speaker 1: I believe this fishing rod is just what grandpa wants. Don’t you think so?
Speaker 2: I’m not sure. He enjoys fishing, right, but grandma worries so much that he might catch a cold when he goes to the lakes and so do I. You know how careless grandpa can be.
Speaker 1: Yes, things like nasty weather, cold and rain can never stop him from going fishing. One day he got home absolutely frozen. His coat and sweater were wet through.
Speaker 2: It seems to me I know what to buy to please both grandpa and grandma! A pair of long warm rubber boots for fishermen.
Speaker 1: Good idea! The boots grandpa wears are really not waterproof. He needs better ones.
Text D
Kate: Hi, Ron! I called you on Sunday but you didn’t answer. Were you out of town? Ron: Yes, we went to the city for a brief entertaining trip, as mum called it.
Kate: Ohh! Was it fun?
Ron: Absolutely not. I had plans to see the motoraces, they’ve just built a new mototrack, and you know how much I love motorbike competitions but my sister spoilt a whole day.
Kate: How could she? She is a sweet little girl.
Ron: She is, but she wanted to go to the zoo. Mum could not disappoint her.
Kate: I’m so sorry, but it’s not the worst scenario ever. When we went for a holiday last time, I got a cold and spent six days inside in the hotel room.

Presenter: Good afternoon! Today we have asked five people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about their schools. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A. My high school in Germany is not big at all. Actually, only about a thousand people. The good thing is that we are all very united. You see, in a German high school, there are students from ten years old to twenty years old and sometimes there can be bullying. Fortunately, that is not our case. We get along well. The older students are very kind and help the younger ones. I believe we are lucky to study in such a family environment.
Speaker B. My high school is in the very centre of our town and children from different cultural backgrounds go there. Half of the students are Spanish, but also there are many people from Asian countries, especially China and Korea. We also have students from Latin America and Russia. I really enjoy being part of that diverse community. Our cultures and backgrounds are different, but we are learning to respect each other and I truly believe it’s a great experience!
Speaker C. My high school has a very good reputation in our town and it deserves it. All my classmates are very motivated and focused on studying. It’s difficult to learn in this environment because you have to keep up with your classmates – nobody wants to look like a loser. It’s also exciting, it feels like a race. But we do help each other. We’ve got special classes where students of the same year help each other with most difficult matters.
Speaker D. I live in the centre of the city. Fortunately, my school is nearby and I spend lots of time there. I mean I go there not only to learn, but also to do sports and other recreational activities. The school is really well-equipped. We have two gyms: one for games like football and volleyball, the other for gymnastics and acrobatics. There’s also a swimming pool. It’s not large, but it’s fine anyway. And there’s an open-air sports ground, which I particularly enjoy.
Speaker E. I’ve changed school recently and though I still have many friends in my former school, I like my new one very much. It’s located in an old three-storey building. The first thing that impressed me was that the school looks very traditional from the outside and very modern inside. The classrooms are light and spacious, the corridors and lobbies are large and arranged in a high-tech style. There’s even a winter garden on the upper floor of the building.

Now we are ready to start.
Interviewer: Do you mind taking part in our survey? We are doing it as a part of our university course. It won’t take you long.
Respondent: No, I don’t mind. It looks like I've got lots of time anyway.
Interviewer: Oh. What’s wrong with your bicycle? Do you need help?
Respondent: No, thanks. It’s just a flat tire and I’m waiting for my friend to bring a pump so that we can fix it. My sister took mine to pump the ball for their volleyball game and didn’t bring it back to me.
Interviewer: I understand you do cycling quite often?
Respondent: Yes, I like it. It helps me keep fit.
Interviewer: Do you think people should use bicycles as a means of transport more often? Instead of cars, buses and trains?
Respondent: I wouldn’t put it like that. The bicycle is ideal for a ride in the countryside, but you can’t use it when you travel long distances.
Interviewer: And what means of transport do you prefer for travelling?
Respondent: The plane, of course. It’s fast and comfortable. I always choose the plane for travelling.
Interviewer: Right. And you are still at school, aren’t you?
Respondent: Yes, I am.
Interviewer: What subject do you like most of all? Is it Mathematics or Languages?
Respondent: Neither of them. It’s History. It’s fascinating to learn about the past.
Interviewer: Yes?
Respondent: And... I was born in Scotland where history is in the air.
Interviewer: Oh, yeah! I’ve been to Scotland - it’s an amazing country. Do you play the... I don’t remember the name of their traditional musical instrument...
Respondent: The bagpipes? No. I play the guitar and that is all. I’d like to learn to play the piano too but cannot find time for it.
Interviewer: The guitar is great! What else do you do? I mean as a hobby. Some people of your age enjoy collecting magnets or assembling Lego.
Respondent: No, I’m not interested in that stuff. I do some blogging. It’s my latest hobby. My blog is about the legends of Scotland.
Interviewer: Have you got any followers as a blogger?
Respondent: Ninety at the moment. I hope there’ll be more.
Interviewer: Ninety followers is a very good start for a person who is new to blogging. I wish you success!

In der schönen Osterzeit,
Wenn die frommen Bäckersleut
Viele süße Zuckersachen
Backen und zurechte machen,
Wünschten Max und Moritz auch
Sich so etwas zum Gebrauch.
Doch der Bäcker, mit Bedacht,
Hat das Backhaus zugemacht.
Also will hier einer stehlen,
Muß er durch den Schlot sich quälen.
Ratsch! Da kommen die zwei Knaben
Durch den Schornstein, schwarz wie Raben.
Puff! Sie fallen in die Kist,
Wo das Mehl darinnen ist.
Da! Nun sind sie alle beide,
Rund herum so weiß wie Kreide.
Aber schon mit viel Vergnügen
Sehen sie die Brezeln liegen.
Knacks! - Da bricht der Stuhl entzwei;
Schwapp! -Da liegen sie im Brei.
Ganz von Kuchenteig umhüllt,
Steh'n sie da als Jammerbild.
Gleich erscheint der Meister Bäcker
Und bemerkt die Zuckerlecker.
Eins, zwei, drei! - eh' man's gedacht,
Sind zwei Brote d'raus gemacht.
In dem Ofen glüht es noch
Ruff! — damit ins Ofenloch!
Ruff! man zieht sie aus der Glut;
Denn nun sind sie braun und gut.
Jeder denkt, die sind perdü!
Aber nein - noch leben sie.
Knusper, Knasper! - wie zwei Mäuse
Fressen sie durch das Gehäuse;
Und der Meister Bäcker schrie:
«Ach herrjeh! da laufen sie!»

Jedermann im Dorfe kannte
Einen, der sich Böck benannte.
Alltagsröcke, Sonntagsröcke,
Lange Hosen, spitze Fräcke,
Westen mit bequemen Taschen,
Warme Mäntel und Gamaschen,
Alle diese Kleidungssachen
Wußte Schneider Böck zu machen.
Oder wäre was zu flicken,
Abzuschneiden, anzustücken,
Oder gar ein Knopf der Hose
Abgerissen oder lose
Wie und wo und was es sei,
Hinten, vorne, einerlei
Alles macht der Meister Böck,
Denn das ist sein Lebenszweck.
Drum so hat in der Gemeinde
Jedermann ihn gern zum Freunde.
Aber Max und Moritz dachten,
Wie sie ihn verdrießlich machten.
Nämlich vor des Meisters Hause
Floß ein Wasser mit Gebrause.
Übers Wasser führt ein Steg
Und darüber geht der Weg.
Max und Moritz, gar nicht träge,
Sägen heimlich mit der Säge,
Ritzeratze! voller Tücke,
In die Brücke eine Lücke.
Als nun diese Tat vorbei,
Hört man plötzlich ein Geschrei:
“He, heraus, du Ziegen-Böck!
Schneider, Schneider, meck, meck, meck!”
Alles konnte Böck ertragen,
Ohne nur ein Wort zu sagen;
Aber wenn er dies erfuhr,
Ging”s ihm wider die Natur.
Schnelle springt er mit der Elle
Über seines Hauses Schwelle,
Denn schon wieder ihm zum Schreck
Tönt ein lautes: ‘Meck, meck, meck!’
Und schon ist er auf der Brücke.
Kracks, die Brücke bricht in Stücke!
Wieder tönt es: “Meck, meck, meck!”
Plumps, da ist der Schneider weg!
Grad als dieses vorgekommen,
Kommt ein Gänsepaar geschwommen,
Welches Böck in Todeshast
Krampfhaft bei den Beinen faßt.
Beide Gänse in der Hand,
Flattert er auf trocknes Land.
Übrigens bei alledem
Ist so etwas nicht bequem!
Wie denn Böck von der Geschichte
Auch das Magendrücken kriegte.
Hoch ist hier Frau Böck zu preisen!
Denn ein heißes Bügeleisen,
Auf den kalten Leib gebracht,
Hat es wiedergutgemacht.
Bald im Dorf hinauf, hinunter
Hieß es: Böck ist wieder munter.
