2016.

I don`t read much,  but  most of all  I like works of the famous Russian romantic  writer and poet  Alexander  Grin (Alexander Stepanovich Grinevsky) because his stories,  novels and poems are full of  kindness, beauty and love to people. I read such his works as: “ Winter Fairy–Tale”, “Talkative Goblin“, “Running above waves” and some others.  These books  became  my favourite     thanks  to  my Grandmother, a  former teacher of  literature.  Once,   when I was watching the film    “Scarlet Sails”  on  TV,  she declared: “You  must read the book   -   you will not regret”.  And  I  did it.   I couldn`t stop reading until I had read it to the end. I was excited  and impressed greatly by the unusual romantic story and by  so unusual and wonderful heroes of this story: Assol  and Gray.

In a small town Kaperna   people  considered   Assol,  a  girl  from a poor family,  to have a bee in her bonnet because  she   sincerely believed  that once a beautiful ship under scarlet sails would come to take her away.  A very    old  man said this  to her when she met  him while she was  walking   along the streets of the town to the shop with a basket full of   different  funny toys, which her father made.   She was naive and her heart was wide opened  for wonder and happiness. But on the other hand,   at that time she  felt  lonely  because everybody laughed at her story and not a single person in Kaperna  believed it.  Only   her farther, who raised her alone after her mother `s death  and loved her very much, supported her and both of them lived  looking forward to this inevitable  event.

Gray was born in a wealthy traditional family,   the boy himself was not traditional,  but rather exceptional.  Once he painted nails and blood on the hands and feet of the crucified Christ as  if  he wanted to ease his  pain.   Thus,  he  spoiled a very expensive picture.  Next time he scalded his arm with boiling  soup  in order to experience  the pain,  received by the cook,  and  broke his piggy bank  to help her to get married.  Nobody in the family tried to prevent him to live in his own world.  When he was twelve  he went to the library and saw a picture of a ship  on the crest  of  the wave.   At  that  moment he felt himself a captain.   It  took  him  eight    years  to  became a  real  captain.

It happened so that the fate  brought him to  Kaperna, where he heard a legend about a young girl Assol, waiting for her captain  under scarlet sails. For Gray this story didn`t seem so fantastic as for  citizens of  Kaperna. He went to the shop,   bought   two thousand  metres of scarlet silk for sails on his ship “A Secret” and brought his ship to Kaperna.   I couldn`t  keep my tears when I was reading the scene  of  meeting Gray with Assol, who cried standing in the water: ”It`s me!   It`s me!”.

Alexander  Grin himself  said about this book: “I understood one thing –  one can do miracles by his own hands”.  I completely agree with him. We live  in the era of technology and business. We have no time to stop, to look around, to listen to each other and to feel one`s pain or happiness. My classmates, for example,  are friendly, but it seems to me that computers  for them are close friends. We almost never get together to speak friendly or to dream about  future or to discuss something important for all of us.  I  consider that  to be young  means to be romantic,  but I see (may be I am mistaken)  that most young people are not romantic and such books as “Scarlet Sails” and other works by Alexander  Grin can cause the most sensitive and romantic  feelings. As for me, I  must confess that “Scarlet Sails”  helps me in difficult situations and helps me to believe in my happy fortune. C:\Users\Admin\Desktop\scrn_big_02.jpg
