Тема: «Book design»

Тип урока: Изучение нового материала

Форма урока: Практическое занятие

Цель урока: Изучить новый лексический материал по теме «Оформление книги», развивать коммуникативную, языковую компетенцию.

Задачи урока:

Образовательные:

Ознакомление с новыми лексическими единицами. Активизация  познавательной активности обучающихся.

Развивающие:

Способствование развитию навыков монологической речи с использованием опорного материала. Развитие навыков  детального понимания содержания текста с извлечением конкретной информации. Формирование умения анализировать и обобщать учебный материал.

Воспитательные:

Воспитание культуры общения, формирование ценностных ориентаций, уважительного отношения к книгам.

Методы и методические приёмы:

                          •        словесный (беседа, рассказ);

                          •        наглядный (метод демонстраций);

                          •        практический (письменные и устные упражнения).

Межпредметные связи: информатика, русский язык.

Аспекты языка: лексика.

Виды речевой деятельности:  говорение, чтение, письмо.

Режим работы: индивидуальный, фронтальный, групповой.

Виды упражнений: языковые, условно речевые.

Технологии: Дифференцированный подход к учащимся, интенсификация обучения на основе схем и опорных конспектов, компьютерные технологии, здоровьесберегающий компонент.

Ход урока.

I. Организационный момент.

  (проверка готовности учащихся к уроку).

Teacher: Good morning, dear students! I’m glad to see you and I hope that you are in a good mood. Sit down, please. I ask you to be active, attentive and considerate. Let’s start our lesson. Open your copybooks, write down the date. What date is it today? What day of the week is it today? Who is absent today?

Teacher: Please, look at the sheets.

( Обучающиеся просматриваю фотографий c различными книгами и самостоятельно определяют тему урока).

Teacher:   Dear students! I think our lesson will be interesting and exciting today because we are going to speak about book design. What are we going to speak about?

Teacher:  Yes, of course. We'll speak about books and their productions. We'll work with the text and I suppose at the end of the lesson you can answer my questions without any problems.

III. Изложение нового материала 

1. Введение  лексики.

Работа над произношением лексического материала (на листах написана активная лексика c переводом).

Teacher:   First of all let’s study the new words which will be necessary for our lesson. Please, look at the sheets. Listen to me and repeat.

Vocabulary:

Flyleaf, the cover, to highlight, the dust jacket, the binding, book case, hardcover, softcover, to attach, a bracket, the publisher, dedication, the motto, duplicate, in accordance, a frontispiece, an avantile, to overload, a new chapter, outline, a footer.

На этом этапе учащиеся усваивают новый учебный материал. Преподаватель контролирует скорость чтения, фонетическую грамотность, интонацию, корректность.

Book cover

The cover protects the book from damage – from crumpling, creases, and even from water getting on it. But at the same time, it should also attract the attention of the future reader. Highlight a book among others on the shelf. To attract the reader to yourself! Insist that he pick it up! And when he does, he can present himself. Briefly tell us what it is about.

Dust Jacket

This is not a characteristic of the cover, saying that it is incredibly cool and attractive. This is a publishing term that means an additional cover (in the form of a sheet of paper with turned-up edges) that fits on top of the binding. If the binding protects the book, then the dust jacket protects the binding itself from external influences. In this case, the name of the author and the title of the work are printed on the cover, and an illustration is printed on the dust jacket in addition to the name and title. The back and spine of the dust jacket are designed in the same way as a regular cover.

Book case

The third level of protection of the book. The case is most often used for gift or exclusive editions. There may also be an illustration on the case, or you can limit yourself to the name and title. In addition to additional protection, the case also performs a presentation function. The first reaction of a buyer who picks up such a book is: "What kind of work is this that deserves such a publisher's attitude?"

Book binding

Sometimes this word is synonymous with the cover. "Hardcover" or "softcover". But generally, in the basic understanding, binding is a way of connecting pages to each other and attaching them to the cover. A spring binding is when the entire book is held together with a plastic or metal spring. The binding can be glued (glue is applied to the spine and inserted into the cover), or on a bracket (the book is stitched with a metal bracket in the middle and folded in half). In hardcover, the book block is stitched with threads and inserted into a hard cardboard cover. Some binding methods are combined with each other. For example, thick books are first divided into small blocks, which are sewn together with a thread, and then glued to the cover.

The flyleaf

Turning the cover over, we see the flyleaf. It is present only in hardcover, because it is with the help of the flyleaf that the book block is glued to the binding cover. The flyleaf, like the cover, is a space for the designer's self–expression. It can be monophonic, or contain some kind of pattern. Textbooks include important background information on the flyleaf (open any chemistry textbook and see the periodic table). In fantasy works, you can often see a map of the world in which the action takes place on the flyleaf. But more often it's still thick plain paper, or a neutral pattern. A flyleaf is the same flyleaf, but at the end of the book (back flyleaf).

Title

The title page precedes the title page. The name of the author and the title of the book are placed on it, but in a smaller size than on the title. The name of the publisher and the year of publication of the book. Dedication. The motto of the series, etc. It is important to understand that the title precedes the title page, but does not duplicate it.

In translated editions, the author's name and title are placed on the title page in the original language. Not every book has a title, but only the one in which it is needed in accordance with the idea of the author or artist.

A frontispiece is a kind of an avantile, but with graphic information. In other words, with a drawing. A photo of the author, an illustration for the book, in order to create a certain mood in the reader before he opens the book itself.

The title page

Or just a title. A sheet with full information about the book. The title usually contains the author's name, the title of the book, and the year of publication. Additionally, if desired, trying not to overload the title with information, such as an illustration or the publisher's logo.

Output information (title turnover)

Standardized information about a book, necessary for its library classification. The output information is placed on the back of the title page. Library codes: UDC, BBK, ISBN, title, name of the author, co-authors, illustrators, author's mark and abstract.

Header and footer

A line at the top or bottom of the page. A footer is usually separated from the main text by some graphic element, and may contain the title of a book or chapter, the author's name (most often in collections), and the page number.

Schmutztitool

A separate title page inside the book that precedes a new section or chapter. It is designed in the same way as the main title, but the title page is always empty, emphasizing the secondary importance of this section compared to the title page of the entire book.

The table of Contents of a book

It is located at the beginning (after the title page) or at the end of the book, and is a list of the titles or sections of the book, indicating the page number from which this section begins. The purpose of the table of contents is to make it easier for the reader to find the right chapter in the book. At the same time, the table of contents, designed by a talented designer and thought out by an equally talented author, also has a presentation function, giving the reader, who picked up the book for the first time, a dosed share of information about the work. A good table of contents is no less intriguing than the title and abstract.
