THE UNITED STATES – AN INTRO FOR KIDS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJVxNfjwP-U

PART 1

Here is the United States. The United States is a country. A country has its own laws, like the law that says you can’t drive too fast, and the law that says you can’t rob other people and many other laws.

The capital is Washington, DC, where the government makes laws. Uncle Sam is the symbol of the US government. Here’s the Capital Building, where Congress writes laws. Congress is made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Here is the White House, where the President lives and works. The President has to say “yes” to new laws, by signing them. George Bush was President for eight years. Now the President is Barack Obama. The first President was George Washington. The more presidents were Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.

The other important part of the government is the Supreme Court, with nine judges, called Justices. They talk a lot. They explain what the laws mean.

PART 2

The United States is made up of 50 states. In the US flag there are 50 stars, one for each state. Some states have lots of people in them, like California, and Texas and New York State. But some states have very few people in them, like Wyoming and Vermont. When the United States first got started, there were only 13 states. It grew toward the west, to the Pacific Ocean.

The United States is divided into parts, or regions, including the Northeast, which includes the New England States, and the Mid-Atlantic States, the Midwest and Great Plains States, the South, and finally the West, which includes the Rocky Mountain States, and the Pacific States. The national bird of the United States is the Bald Eagle, and two more national symbols are baseball and apple pie.

The state of Alaska is not next to the other states. It is only next to Canada. Alaska is way up north. Alaska is famous because it is very wild, very large and very cold. The tallest mountain in the US is in Alaska: Mount McKinley, which is here.

Hawaii is a state, but it is out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii is famous because it is warm, and people like to visit the beaches there. The lowest point in the United States is called Death Valley, which is here, in California. There are five really big lakes in the north, called the great Lakes. The biggest lake in the US is Lake Superior. The longest river is the Mississippi River.

The three biggest cities in the United States are New York City, Los Angeles, California, and Chicago, Illinois.

PART 3

People can do a lot of things in the United States. In Los Angeles, California, people make movies. In San Jose, California, people make software for computers. Near Seattle, Washington, people make big airplanes. In Nashville, Tennessee, people make a lot of music. In Detroit, Michigan, people make a lot of cars. In Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, people make a lot of the metal steel. In New York City, people make books, and they make money on the stock market. And in Boston, Massachusetts, people learn at many famous universities. But the Unites States is famous for letting people do what they want. The Statue of Liberty stands for freedom, the freedom to do what you want.

In the United States there are some famous big places, like the high desert, the Rocky Mountains, the Great Plains, and the Appalachian Mountains. In the United States, there are many famous parks. In Wyoming, there is Yellowstone National Park. In Arizona there is Grand Canyon National Park. In California there is Yosemite National Park and also Redwood National Park. In Tennessee and North Carolina there is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In Florida there is Everglades National Park.

There are also many great monuments in the US. In New York City, there is the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. There are many famous monuments in Washington D.C., like the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. In Philadelphia, you can see Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. In Chicago you can see the Sears Tower. Some sports started in the United States – like baseball, football and basketball. Interesting facts about the USA

Student A

The United States dollar is the official currency of the United States of America. It is divided into 100 cents.

Etymology of this word:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/87/LineartPresRev.png

In the 16th century, Count Hieronymus Schlick of Bohemia began minting coins. The valley where the silver was mined is now known as Jáchymov, which  was previously known as Joachimstaler later shortened to the German Taler. This German word was eventually transferred  into English  dollar.

The word "buck" (doláč, babka) is often used in colloquial (hovorová) English.

Student B

The national flag of the United States of America is often simply called the American flag. It consists of thirteen horizontal red and white stripes, with a blue rectangle which has fifty small, white  stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America and the 13 stripes represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence (vyhlásily nezávislost) from the Kingdom of Great Britain. Nicknames for the flag include the "Stars and Stripes" and "The Star-Spangled Banner"  which is also the name of the national anthem (národní hymna). The flag is usually flown at most public buildings. File:Flag of the United States.svg

Student C

The White House is the official residence of the President of the United States of America, and is located in Washington, D.C., the capital city of the USA (D.C. stands for the District of Columbia named after Christopher Columbus – it is not a state). The first US President to live in the White House was John Adams (the second President of the USA). However, the construction of the House had begun during the presidency of George Washington (the first US president- who had not lived there) During the War of 1812, the British set fire to the President’s House in 1814. Nearly all of the interior was destroyed by the fire. There is a legend  that says that the House was called the White House when it was rebuilt and when its fire-blackened surfaces were painted white (over the original grey) http://www.infoplease.com/images/white-house-springtime.jpg

Student D

The Statue of Liberty is a huge sculpture that is located on Liberty Island in New York. This monument was a gift to the USA from the people of France. It represents a woman who is escaping the chains of tyranny (the broken chains lie at her feet). The statue holds a torch that is a symbol of liberty.  Liberty was designed by the French sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi. The statue was built in France and was brought to the USA in pieces on a French ship. The statue was re-assembled in the USA . http://www.theblogue.cz/clanky/zajimavosti/socha-svobody/socha1.jpg

The seven rays of Liberty's crown symbolize the seven seas and seven continents of the world. Liberty holds a tablet in her left hand that reads "July 4, 1776" (written in Roman numerals, MDCCLXXVI), which is Independence Day of the United States of America.

I.A. Read the paragraphs below and match them with the threat they refer to:

1.“ Environmental racism is inequitable distribution of environmental hazards based on race. The Federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry considers lead poisoning to be the number one environmental health problem for children in the United States. Some 4 million children – many of whom are African American, Latino and Native American- have dangerously high lead levels in their bodies. This lead is absorbed from contaminated drinking water and soil polluted by industrial effluents and automobile exhaust.”

2.“Every year humans kill about 100 million sharks, skates and rays, about half of them caught as unwanted “by-catch” while fishing for other species. Sharks are particularly sensitive to overfishing because they grow slowly, mature late and have few young each generation. As top predators, sharks play a crucial role in the health of the ocean ecosystems and their extermination could lead to major ecological changes in the ocean”.

3.“ In February 2002, a huge section of the Larsen B Ice Shelf along The Antarctic Peninsula coast suddenly disintegrated into thousands of icebergs. The total volume of ice released was the equivalent to 29 trillion bags of party ice. Climatologists  warn that this dramatic collapse could be a signal of global climate change and an omen of catastrophic events to come.”

4.“ A 1 percent loss of ozone results in a 2 percent increase in UV rays reaching the earth’s surface and could result in about a million extra human skin cancers per year worldwide.”

5.“ Every second, on average, four or five children are born somewhere on the earth. I that same second, two other people die. This difference between births and deaths means a net gain of roughly 2.5 more humans per second in the world population. This means we are adding 9,000 per hour, 217,000 per day, or about 79 million  more people per year.”

6.“ Sulfur dioxide and sulphuric acid released by industry causes massive destruction of the vegetation. Rains then wash away the exposed soil, leaving a barren moonscape.”

7.“Pollution from factory pipes has been vastly reduced but erosion from farm fields, construction sites, airborne mercury, sulphur and other substances are increasingly contaminating lakes and wetlands.”

8.“ Worldwide, we lost between 9 million and 12 million ha of forest per year from 1990 to 2000. Clear-cutting and burning especially in order to get pasture and cropland have turned many forests into a dry, barren ground”.

9.“ How does the air taste, feel, smell, and look in your neighbourhood? Chances are that wherever you live, the air is contaminated to some degree. Smoke, dust, corrosive gases and toxic compounds are present nearly everywhere.”

B. Read the following text carefully:

The Amazon forest covers five million square kilometers, an area as big as the whole Europe excluding Russia. It contains one third of the world’s trees. However, the trees are disappearing. By 1974, a quarter of the forest had already been cut down. In the following   year, 1975, four per cent of the remaining trees went. If the destruction of the forest continues at the same rate, there will be nothing left in a few years.

Scientists say that the disappearance of trees is already causing changes in the climate. In Peru, there is less snow than before on the high peaks of the Andes mountains. In Bolivia there is very little rain.

What will happen if more of the Amazon forest is cut down? According to climatologists if the Amazon forest disappears, there will be less oxygen and it will be difficult for us to breathe, the temperature will rise, the ice-caps at the North and the South poles will melt. Even the sea level will rise. Therefore, seaside cities will be flooded.

Scientists do not agree about the calculations which can be done in different ways with different results. But all the scientists agree that if we destroy the Amazon forest, it will be an environmental suicide. Life on earth will become difficult, and it may become impossible.

1-Give a title to the text.

3-Answer the following questions according to the text:

a- How big is the Amazon forest?
