  1. Работа с текстом

Your task will be to read the text and answer the following questions

  1. What events are considered to be the beginning of the Tudors Age?
  2.  How did the rule of the Tudors influence historical development of the country?
  3. Who clashed with the power of the old barons?
  4. How did the king benefit from it?
  5. What groups of the society supported him?
  6. What enabled the Tudors to become despotic rulers?
  7. How did the king cope with the European politics?

The end of the Wars of the Roses, the victory of Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field and his marriage with Princess Elizabeth, heiress of the House of York (1485) were the events that symbolized the end of the Middle Ages in Britain. The year of 1485 is traditionally considered the watershed and the beginning of the Tudor Age. In historical development the rule of the Tudors (1485—1603) with their absolute power in the long run contributed to the strengthening of its role in international affairs.

The 16th century was the age of a growing absolutism of monarchy and centralization of the state; these phenomena facilitated the development and foundation of new capitalist relations in production. The English type of absolute monarchy was shaped by Henry VII, who was opposed to the power of old barons. He ordered that the old castles should be destroyed (pulled down) and the feudal baronial armies should be disbanded. He was very rich with the confiscated wealth of his defeated rivals. He was strong enough to prevent any revival of armed strength of any group of nobles, and he enjoyed support of merchants and small landowners who had all suffered from the civil war.

These two groups, linked by a common interest in the wool trade not yet powerful enough to claim the political power were to fight for in the 17th century. They were strong enough to be useful allies of the Tudor kings and queens. Their support enabled the Tudors to become despotic rulers, while at first playing a progressive historic role.

But their reign was abundant in various controversial arbitrary developments. The financial policy of Henry VII filled the Treasury and strengthened the throne and the church position, improved the contacts with Rome. The King skillfully steered through the complexities of European politics.

        Let’s discuss your answers.

  1. Работа в группах.

As we know Henry VII had four children but only two of them managed to survive. But it’s his eldest son Henry who made the reign of the Tudors so memorable for the British history. For sure, especially interesting is his private life that changed not only Henry’s character but the life of his country as well. Let’s take a closer look at Henry’s ladies and put them in a chronological order along with historical events that accompanied their lives.

You divide into six groups. Each group gets a short biography of one of the six wives. (ПРИЛОЖЕНИЕ 1)

You read and translate your text then fill in your information in the following table.

№ and Name

Reasons for marriage

Children

Death

Students discuss the results. (Работа с презентацией)

  1. Работа с видеозаписью.

You know that the history of the Tudors’ Royal family is considered to be the most dramatic for England. It is staged and screened all over the world. One of the most popular TV versions is, of course, “The Tudors” with Jonathan Rhys Meyers starring as Henry VIII.

Now you’ll watch a documentary film about one of the most magnificent palaces in the UK – Hampton Court. Playing Ann Boleyn in the series, an English actress, Natalie Dormer, is showed around this Royal residence. (Программа из серии Behind the Tudors. Hampton Court. Материал доступен на  YOUTUBE)

We’ll watch the video twice and then you’ll have to do the following tasks:

  1. What are these numbers stand for?
  1. 1529      b. 1500     c. 2000      d. 500       e. 10       f. 1530        g. 30 000 000

  10. Coming to Hampton Court the King’s people were free to have a good time without any control. (F)

So, we now have time to check your answers.

  1. Put the parts of the text in the right order.

  1. Shortly after this, Henry was excommunicated by the Pope. Following the birth of a daughter, Henry ordered for the beheading of Anne on the charges of adultery and treason. In 1536, Henry authorized the Ten Articles these articles referred to just three of the normal seven sacraments - Baptism, Penance and the Eucharist and did not include the usual following four - Confirmation, Ordination, Marriage and Last Rites. 1537 saw Henry approve publication of the English Bible.

  1. In 1509 Henry married his brothers intended wife to be Catherine of Aragon, but had their marriage annulled after Catherine failed to produce a son and heir to the throne. His divorce to Catherine was greatly opposed by the Church and the Pope, but it was with the help of Archbishop Cranmer that the marriage was declared null and void. Henry's second marriage to Anne Boleyn, secretly took place and Anne went on to be crowned Queen in Westminster Abbey.

  1. It was in 1538 when due to Henry's anger at not being granted a divorce to Catherine of Aragon and the general dissatisfaction with the Monarchy as a whole, and not forgetting his greed, he ordered the destruction of all Catholic religious buildings, beyond the possibility of restoration. However, some buildings that could be put to secular use were allowed to remain. Henry went on to establish the Church of England after breaking free of the Catholic Church. The dissolution of the Monasteries caused a rebellion, which Henry dealt with in his usual brutal manner.

  1. However, after an adulterous relationship with Francis Dereham, her private secretary and another with a young courtier named Thomas Culpeper, Henry saw to it that she and the two men suffered the same fate at the hands of the executioner's blade. In 1543 Henry married Catherine Parr, his fifth and final wife. They were married for 3 years before Henry's death in January 1547. It was at Henry's request that he was laid to rest alongside his third wife Jane Seymour in St George's Chapel, Windsor. Catherine Parr, the only wife to have survived Henry, passed away one year later in 1544.

  1. Henry's third wife Jane Seymour died shortly after giving birth to a son, but sadly, the longed for heir to the throne died at the young age of 15. His fourth wife Anne of Cleves was a German Protestant Princess. The marriage was arranged by Thomas Cromwell, the Vicar-General of England who then went on to be Chancellor. Henry took an instant dislike to Anne and had the marriage annulled and ordered for Thomas Cromwell to be executed on the charge of treason. In 1540 Henry met his fifth wife Catherine Howard, cousin to Henry's second wife Anne Boleyn.

  1. Henry VIII was born in London, England in 1491. It was following the death of his elder brother Arthur in 1509 when Henry succeeded to the throne at the tender age of 18. As King of England, Henry was reputed to be a man of exceptional beauty, learning and culture. However, he possessed a rather brutal and ruthless side to his personality.
