Oxford News

Monday, 23rd April

Ten students from an Oxford school are going to Africa next month. They are going to walk across the desert. They hope they will help some African schools.

Three of the children, David, 14, Sonia, 12, and Karen, 13, are members of Helping Hands. It is an organization for Africa. It helps schools and hospitals in small villages.

'Last month we collected books, paper and pencils. People also gave us money. We're going to walk 20 kilometers across the desert,' said Karen. 'The schools are in the desert.'

'It isn’t easy,' said David. 'It is hot and dangerous. There are snakes in the desert!'

'We're going to walk ten kilometers a day, so the walk can take two days,' Sonia said. 'My dad is coming with us. He isn't going to walk! He's going to carry our food, water and tents in the car. He's also going to carry the books and things for the schools.'

'I think these kids are fantastic,' said Sonia's father. 'I’m sure they will help the schools in Africa.'

Read the text below and decide which variant A, B or C is the best answer to the questions 11- 17. Mark your answers on the separate answer sheet.

There is something about the English Channel that has always fascinated the human race and it has always played a special role in British history. The sea itself has always been important to mankind but the Channel often created a barrier between Great Britain and the Continent. This barrier has existed for more than 12,000 years and the desire to break it has occupied the minds of many people for almost two hundred years.
The construction of the tunnel is perhaps the most incredible engineering project of the 20th century. In fact its completion was called a "technical triumph”.
However, the first proposal to build a Channel Tunnel appeared in 1802, when a French engineer presented his project for two tunnels to cross it. Historians say Napoleon was interested in that plan. But Napoleon was more interested in fighting the British than in linking the two countries, and shortly afterwards a new war between England and France began. There were many other plans to build a tunnel but unfortunately all of them failed. It was not until after the last war that Britain and France began seriously considering the project. On the 12th February, 1986, Mrs. Thatcher and President Mitterrand signed the Franco-British Treaty which allowed the construction and the operation of the Channel Tunnel. The tunnel was completed eight years later.
It is now very quick and easy to cross the Channel. You don’t have to book a ticket. The Channel Tunnel trains operate twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. You can now cross the Channel in thirty-five minutes. At last the great barrier has been broken.
In 1996, the American Society of Civil Engineers, with Popular Mechanics, selected the tunnel as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

11. What has always been important to all people?
      a. The English Channel.

a. To create a barrier between Great Britain and the Continent.
b. To sign a contract on the construction of the tunnel.
c. To connect Great Britain and the continent by train service.

13. When did the Channel Tunnel begin to function?
a. In 1994.
b. In 1986.
c. In 1996.

14. Who proposed the first plan to build a tunnel under the Channel?
a. Napoleon
b. A French engineer.
c. President Mitterrand.

15. When did the construction of the tunnel become possible?
a. After the treaty had been signed.
b. After the engineering project had been presented.
c. After many other plans had been discussed.

16. Why is it easy to cross the Channel at present?
a. The tickets are cheap.
b. The tickets are sold everywhere.
c. The trains go day and night.

17. What is the best title for the text?
a. Engineering Projects.
b. The Channel Tunnel.
c. Seven Wonders of the World.

Listen to Tom talking about a nasty experience he had and choose True or False

When I was 11 years old I had an accident. I get scared even now when I think about it. I went ice-skating near my house. There were a lot of people and I saw some of them were falling over on the ice. It was the first time that I’d gone ice-skating so I was nervous and I wasn’t sure how to skate. I went with a friend   who was very good at it and he spent some time teaching me, but I didn’t make much progress. I think he got fed up with me so he left and went off skating by himself.  As soon as he left I fell over. I envied all the other people I could see. They all seemed to skate well. In the end I got bored because I kept falling over. So I took off my skates and just walked around on the ice in my shoes. It was cold and my hands were frozen. Suddenly I stepped on something that wasn’t hard. What was it? It was a weak place in the ice. When I stepped on it, the ice broke and I fell in. I sank under the ice. I thought that I was going to die and started to panic. But I did my best to grab the edge of the ice and tried to pull myself out. But it was very difficult for an 11-year old. This seemed to go on for a very long time. I struggled and struggled but couldn’t get out. I was getting very frightened. Then, fortunately, a man came to help me. He grabbed my arms and pulled me up out of the water onto the ice. So I’m still alive today, but even now whenever I think about that time, I feel uncomfortable and I don’t want to go skating again.

The Least Successful Day Trip

Few people have packed more into a day trip than Michael and Lillian Long from Kent who took the ferry from their home in England to Boulogne in France in 1987. On Easter Sunday this adventurous couple went for a short walk around the town. In no time they were spectacularly lost and showing all the qualities of born explorers.

‘We walked and walked,’ Mrs Long recalled, ‘and the further we walked to try to get back, the further we walked away from Boulogne.’

Unable to speak French, they felt embarrassed about asking the way, so they walked throughout the night until finally the next morning a driver gave them a lift to a small village they did not recognize. Here they caught a train to the wrong destination – Paris. In the French capital they spent all their remaining money on catching what they thought was the express train back to Boulogne. After an enjoyable trip they arrived in Luxembourg at midnight on Monday.

Two hours later police put them on the train back to Paris, but it divided and their half ended up in Basle, an attractive medieval town in the north of Switzerland.

Having no money, they tried to find work, but without success. The railway company offered them a free ticket back to Belfort, thinking that this was where they had come from. Once they got off the train, our heroes hiked forty-two miles to Vesoul, hitched a lift to Paris and then nearly boarded the train to Bonn in Germany.

Diverted just in time to the right platform, they finally reached Boulogne a week after they had set out on their walk. They had covered a distance of almost 1,700km without luggage, maps or any idea of where they were. When he arrived at Dover harbour, Mr Long said it was the first time they had travelled abroad and that they would not be leaving England again.

Read Food across culture, time and space and decide if the following statements 11–20are true (T), false (F) or not stated in the text (NS). Mark the correct answer True, False or Not Stated in the title sheet.

Food Across Culture, Time and Space

For hundreds of years the movement of people through the discovery of new  lands, trading, colonization and immigration has gradually brought about huge  changes and modifications in eating and food habits in different parts of the world.  European food habits have changed dramatically since Christopher Columbus sailed  across the Atlantic and landed in the New World in 1492. Since then a great variety  of previously unknown food plants have been imported to Europe, such as tomatoes, cacao, maize, potatoes, peppers, beans and peanuts. These have slowly become  common food stuff.

The Moors imported Asiatic rice to the Iberian peninsula in the 10th  century  and it was introduced into the Italian diet through trading in the 15th  century. Rice  cultivation was then introduced into North America by the European settlers. In the  16th  century the Portuguese and Dutch started transporting tea from Asia to Europe  and in 1650 tea arrived in America. Today the four staple foods found throughout the world are wheat, rice, maize and potatoes.

Furthermore, in the last few decades with even more immigration taking place,  increased international travel and better communications between countries, the  traditional foods, dishes and recipes of one  country have influenced or even been  assimilated by another. For example, in Britain people quite often eat Italian pasta, Spanish paella, Indian curry or Japanese sushi as part of their everyday diet. In many European countries when dining out in restaurants nowadays, people can taste and experience dishes from vast array of different countries such as China, Japan, Ethiopia, Mexico and Brazil.

READING

Time: 30 minutes

Task 1

Read the article. Which paragraph contains the following information? Write the correct letter, A-F, in boxes 1-6.

1 The largest mammal

2 Myths and reality

3 Incredible creatures of Pleistocene Australia

4 Importance of animal protection

5 Giant lizards

6 Mystery of the giants' disappearance

The lost giants of Australian fauna

(A) Australia's wildlife is unique. The vast majority of the animals that live there are not found anywhere else – and things were no different 1 million years ago during the Pleistocene: the age of the super-sized mammal. Before humanity became Earth's undisputed superpower, giant beasts of all shapes and sizes dominated every continent, but the Pleistocene mammals of Australia were different. Some of them could grow to the size of small cars, or possessed teeth longer than knife blades.

(B) None of these animals survive today – although exactly why that's the case is a mystery. Humans, with their advanced hunting techniques and use of fire to modify the landscape, may have played a central role in the megafauna's disappearance, but this idea is still a matter of heated debate.

(C) Even if we cannot be sure that the arrival of Australian Aboriginals on the continent had catastrophic effects on its native animals, it seems that the animals had a rather spiritual effect on the humans. The Aboriginal mythological "Dreamtime" includes a cast of monstrous creatures, many of which bear a close resemblance to some of the real-life monsters that once stalked Australia's plains. Are the myths based in fact? Perhaps: after all, these creatures are far stranger than anything dreamed up by humans.

(D) For instance, the two-tonnes weighting Diprotodon comfortably holds the title of largest marsupial ever. In size and appearance it looked superficially like a modern rhinoceros, but the Diprotodon seems to have had a social lifestyle more like that of an elephant, another mammal with which it shares anatomical similarities. What the Diprotodon most resembles, however, is exactly what it is: an enormous wombat.

(E) Another record breaker, this time a world champion; Varanus priscus, commonly known by its antiquated genus name Megalania – was the largest terrestrial lizard the world has ever known. Megalania was a goanna lizard, a relative of today's infamous Komodo dragon, and conservative estimates have predicted that it was at least 5.5m long.

(F) These monster marsupials were not the only giants. Their numbers were swelled by half-tonne birds and dinosaur-like tortoises. Although this biological assemblage was truly nightmarish for humans, it greatly enriched the Australia’s fauna and contributed to the world’s biological diversity. Unfortunately, all of these species are extinct nowadays. This fact shows us that even strong, monstrous creatures can easily die out. So we need to care about animals that surround us today and don’t let them disappear as it happened to their distant ancestors.

The Cat and the Mice

A cat lives in a small house. In the kitchen of the cat’s house little mice live. The cat is very big and every day she eats one or two mice. But on her birthday the cat does not eat mice. Every year all the mice in her house come to the cat’s birthday party. Of course, the cat is very glad to see the mice. They give her birthday presents: cakes, bottles of milk and interesting toys. The toys are made of paper and cotton. The cat likes the cakes and milk. She likes the toys too.

One day the mice come to the cat’s birthday party and say “Here is a blue ribbon with a small bell for you”. The cat is glad because the ribbon is nice, it is made of silk. The cat takes the ribbon, puts it on and says “Thank you. I like the ribbon with the bell very much. I will wear it all the time”. The mice are happy for they know when the cat comes.

Now the mice run away from the kitchen every time they hear the bell.

Mary (M): Hello, Peter. How are you? We haven’t seen each other for a long time. How is life?

Peter (P): Hello, Mary. Life is wonderful. A couple of days ago I came home from the country of my dreams.

(M): The country of your dreams? Where is it?

(P): A long way from here. I’m talking about New Zealand.

(M): New Zealand? Wow! How was it? Tell me all about it.

(P): They sometimes call it “Kiwiland” because of the kiwi birds and the kiwi fruit. It’s not a big country. It’s in the south-west Pacific and it has two large islands: the North Island and the South Island.

(M): What’s it like then?

(P): It’s really beautiful. It’s got everything you can think of: rainforests, deserts, mountains, volcanoes, lakes, beaches … and the sea, of course.

(M): Did you see a coral reef?

(P): No. New Zealand doesn’t have a coral reef. But I saw lots of wild birds, like green kakapo parrots, which are heavier than other parrots, and kiwi birds. Did you know that kiwi birds can’t fly? I didn’t see any koalas though. There are also kauri trees-some kauri trees are 2,000 years old!

(M): That’s fascinating! What did you do there?

(P): We went sea kayaking. We also went on guided tours which are becoming more popular, and are not very expensive. But if you want to go alone there are visitor centres where you can get information.

(M): How about food? You probably ate seafood all the time.

(P): No, not all the time. I ate burgers and chips, too! The desserts are delicious: Hokey Pokey ice-cream and kiwi fruit were my favourite ones.

(M): It sounds wonderful. I’d love to go there!

2. Reading Comprehension (15 min)

Task1

Questions 11-15. You are going to read the texts. choose the best heading (A-F) for the texts 11-15.  There is one heading you don’t need.

А. Safe solutions are still needed

B  International efforts to stop pollution

C. Science for nature protection

D. Set to protect nature.

E. Air pollution in the chain of global destruction.

F.  We are all elements of global ecosystem.

      1. People have lived on our planet for many years. We may live on different continents and in different countries, but we all depend on our planet, on the sun, on animals and plants around us. We must take care of Earth but not destruct wildlife. Many species of animals and birds are disappearing nowadays. We cut down trees to make furniture, but we forget that people can't live without trees and plants. Every little creature or thing on Earth plays its own part and makes our home unique.

2.   One of the biggest eco problems is pollution. The main reason of pollution is rubbish. Most of our rubbish goes to big holes in the ground, called 'dumps'. But dumps are very dangerous for our life, because they are full of rats, which can carry infections away from dumps. Another way to get rid of rubbish is to burn it. But the fires make poisons, which go into the air and pollute it.  This is the propel scientists should get interested in. Such researchers are worth spending money on.

3.    The Royal Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals (the RSPCA) tries to protect animals from bad use. It operates big nation campaigns aimed at lost pets and circus animals. The World Wildlife Fund (The WWF) rescued several species of animals, mammals as well as birds. These organizations also helped to create more than 250 National parks. Greenpeace began its work 20 years ago from saving whales. And now Greenpeace is a world-famous organization, which saves plants, animals and people.

4.   Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut down and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of lakes and rivers dry up. The pollution of air and the world destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological crises.

5.   Numerous conferences have been held to discuss questions of ecologically poor regions including the Aral Sea, the South Urals, Kuzbass, Donbass, Semipalatinsk and Chernobyl. An international environmental research center has been set up on Lake Baikal. Scientists are also doing much to preserve the environment. But these are only the initial steps that must be carried forward to protect not only for the sake of the present but for the future generations.

Task 2

Questions 11-18. You are going to read a story of two friends and their trip. For questions 11-18, choose the answer (A, B, C or D) which you think fits best according to the text.

     Alnwick Castle

Harry Potter (specifically the lure of seeing the castle that starred as Hogwarts) was enough to get us to take a detour to Alnwick Castle in Northeast England on our drive from Manchester to Edinburgh. But when we arrived we learned that there's a lot more to Alnwick Castle than being the location where they filmed Harry Potter. Nicknamed “The Windsor of the North,” it's the second largest inhabited castle in England. The Percy family, which includes the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, has been living inside this medieval fortress for 700 years.

When I was in Wales, I loved visiting the crumbling beauties in Conwy and Beaumaris. As much I love the romanticism of ruins, there's something to be said for a perfectly intact castle that has the comforts of home. And Alnwick definitely does, as it's the ultra-spacious home to the Percy family for much of the year, as the castle is only open to the public from April - October.

In 1309, Henry Lord Percy purchased Alnwick Castle from the Bishop of Durham and moved his family into it from North Yorkshire. Don't we all wish we had descendants with such foresight! He paid between £2,666 and £6,666 for it, which is pretty expensive considering that all of Manhattan was purchased 300 years later for $24.

But clearly he recognized the solid construction because 700 years later, the building still looks great, and it's quite a business as the family rents out a portion of it for weddings, conferences, a study abroad programme with Minnesota's St. Cloud State University. And, most importantly for Harry Potter fans, the outside of the castle was used for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Outer Bailey, the grass area in front of the castle was used for the famous flying broomstick lesson in the first film.

What I liked even more than the decor were all of the decorative pieces and artwork — this Percy family are keen collectors. I particularly enjoyed an entire hallway devoted to their extensive china collection.

I also liked seeing the modern touches that let us visitors know that Alnwick Castle isn't a museum — it's a home. Because I'm nosy, I loved looking at the family photographs — they were prominently displayed, I didn't have to go searching. And I loved that one of the fancy drawing rooms had a flat-screen TV and foosball table. But the castle has never shied away from technology, as it installed electricity in 1889 and was one of the first northeast homes to do so.

11. Alnwick Castle is world famous because

A. the next “Harry Potter” film is going to be filmed there

B. it was used for filmimg “Harry Potter”

C.  the actor who plays Harry Potter lives there

D. it is  the only castle near Manchester

12. According to the text

A. it is the second oldest castle in England

SCRIPT
