Now read and translate the following expressions.

    environment - окружающая среда,

    natural riches - природные богатства,

    interference - вмешательство,

development of civilization - развитие цивилизации,

shortage of natural resources - нехватка природных ресурсов,

to be poisoned - быть отравленным,

the health of people - здоровье людей,

    disease - заболевание,

    allergy - аллергия,

    bronchial asthma - бронхиальная астма.

to recycle wastes - переработать отходы,

to solve problems - решать проблемы,

    apparent - очевидно,

    to destroy - разрушать.

Read and translate the text verbally

Environment is the place where we live. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to them that natural riches were unlimited. But man's interference in nature began to increase with the development of civilization. Our ecology becomes worse and worse with every new day.

There are a lot of ecological problems. The most serious ecological problems are: water pollution, air pollution, land pollution, nuclear pollution, destruction of wildlife, shortage of natural resources, noise from cars and buses.

Water is everywhere, but many rivers, lakes and seas are poisoned. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. People can't drink this water. They should clean the water environment.

Another problem is air pollution. Air pollution influents the health of people. Air pollution causes different diseases, for example, allergy and bronchial asthma.

Many species of animals and birds are disappearing nowadays. Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out forever. People destruct wildlife, cut down trees to make furniture. They forget that people can’t live without trees and plants, because they fill air with oxygen. If nothing is done about it, one million species that are alive today may soon become extinct.

We have problem with nuclear pollution. Nuclear pollution cannot be seen but its effect can be terrible. To make air clean again people need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories, in cars and buses.

Fortunately, it's not too late to solve these problems. We have the time, the money and even the technology to make our planet a better, cleaner and safer place. And it is now more than ever apparent that at the same time we are destroying our bodies and our future.

    Now answer questions in writing.

    1. What ecological problems do you know?

    2. Why can't people drink water from the seas and rivers?

    3. What should people do?

    4. How does air pollution influents the health of people?

    5. What should people do to make air clean again?

We'll see how you understand the text. Here is a little test.

    1.Volcanic eruption in Italy

Nearly two thousand years ago, a volcano called Vesuvius erupted on the west coast of Italy, south of Naples. There was a loud explosion. There was dust and ash everywhere. Children ran to their parents crying. People tried to run away, taking their things with them. They tried to escape, but most of people and animals died.

Vesuvius has erupted many times. The last big eruption was in 1944. Will Vesuvius erupt again? Nobody knows. If it does, it might be a small eruption or a big one. Some people live close to Vesuvius because the soil around it is good for growing crops. But it is also very dangerous.

    2.Disaster in Africa

Sometimes in desert climates, it does not rain for a long time. This happened between 1968 and 1974 in the Sahel, in West Africa. The winds changed direction and the area did not receive any rain for six years. Hundreds of thousands of people and nearly half of the animals in the area died because there wasn’t enough water. The crops did not grow and many countries suffered from famine. People had to walk hundred kilometers to find water.

    3.Disaster in Florida

Hurricanes are very strong winds that come from the sea. Warm wet air rises in a spiral and goes faster and faster – over 160 km an hour. In 1992, «Hurricane Andrew» hit Florida. The people there had to leave their homes and move to other towns and wait. When the hurricane arrived, it killed 15 people and destroyed thousands of buildings. More than 50 000 people had nowhere to live.

    4.Disaster in China

An awful flood happened in China in 1998. It was caused by heavy rainfall. Nearly 4000 people were killed. The flood destroyed houses and left millions of people homeless, a lot of farmland was damaged.

    5.Disaster in Russian

A wildfire is any uncontrolled fire in combustible vegetation that takes place in the countryside or wilderness area.

The 2010 Russian wildfires were several hundred wildfires that broke out across Russia, primarily in the west, starting in late July 2010, due to record temperatures and drought in the region. Russian President declared a state of emergency in 7 regions for the fires. The fires cost $ 15 billion in damages.

Earthquakes show themselves by vibrations and shaking the ground. The vibrations may vary in magnitude.

Some of the most significant earthquakes in recent times include:

The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, the third largest earthquake in recorded history.

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake brought the death to over 13,000 people and over 12,000 people are still missing.

The Tri-State Tornado is the deadliest twister on record, with 695 deaths attributed to it. The tornado passed through Illinois, Indiana and Missouri. Approximately 13,000 people were injured in the twister, which caused $17 million in property damage.

    8.Tsunami in Chile

A 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Chile on February 27, 2010 with intense shaking that lasted for about three minutes. It triggered a tsunami that destroyed several coastal towns in south-central Chile. The tsunami raced through the Pacific Ocean that 53 countries had to post warning, though there was little damage as it moved past Hawaii, Australia and Japan. The death toll was 521 victims.

    Scientific and technical progress

The basis of scientific and technical progress of today is new informational technology which is very different from all the previous technologies. Thanks to up-to-date software and robots new informational technologies can make many processes much faster and transmit information more quickly. It is important today because the quantity of information grows rapidly.
New informational society has its peculiarities. Firstly, more and more employees work in the sphere of service and information. Secondly, more and more huge databases appear to collect and store the information. And finally, information and IT become goods and start playing important part in the country's economy.
These processes affect social structures and values.
It becomes important to learn to get new knowledge quickly and sometimes to change your qualification. IT can first lead to unemployment, but later create even more workplaces especially for highly qualified professionals. While the hardest work can be performed by robots and routine calculations by computers, in the future people with the most creative mind and numerous fresh ideas will get better career chances.
On one hand technology development gives more access to professional and cultural information and leads to new forms of individual enterprises. But on the other hand there is a danger of total control of private life unless special laws are enforced by the government.
Another danger is «intellectual terrorism» when computer viruses block important programs.
There are other directions of technical and scientific progress of today.
One of them is the development of new ecologically clean sources of energy using sun, gravitation, winds or rain. New kind of transports and new agricultural methods that do not harm our nature are being developed today.
Breakthroughs in science have led to creation of artificial viruses for new medicines and products, body organs for transplantation and productive soils for growing vegetables and crops. Many new materials and technologies are being used in our everyday life.
All these innovations may have influence on our life, social relations and globally on our Earth.
The influence can be very different: from psychological and health problems of children who spend too much time online to an opportunity to prevent genetic diseases for future generations.
But the most difficult problems the humanity faces are global problems.
The first and foremost is ecological problem: pollution of air, water and soil, exhaustion of natural resources. Renewable natural resources such as oxygen, forests, flora and fauna do not have enough time to regenerate. This leads to different changes in climate and nature such as depletion of ozone layer and other things that has not been properly studied by scientists yet.
Other crucial problems include wars, epidemics, and demographic problems.
The only way to solve them is to work globally and in cooperation with other countries. And here the humanity should find a way to use new technologies for the common good. The solution of these problems cannot be postponed because otherwise people will have fewer chances to survive on this planet.

    “Modern technologies in our life”.

Today we will talk about modern technologies which have spread (простираться) all over the world and have become really indispensable (необходимый) in our busy activity.

How do you think, what the tasks of the lesson are. So, the tasks of the lesson are the following:

    1. developing speaking skills;
    2. revising lexical material on the topic “Modern technologies in our life”;
    3. developing reading skills.

We’ll be able to travel in the world of different new technologies and you’ll find out which of them will be the most necessary and useful for you and which make your life easier and more comfortable. Besides, we’ll try to guess which technologies can be popular in the nearest future.I advise you to listen and work at the lesson very attentively, because you will have a rather difficult homework – to write an essay on the topic of our lesson – “Modern technologies in our life”.

    Mobile Phones

The technical progress goes straight in huge steps. We live in the 21st century, full of different means of communication. Today almost everyone has a mobile phone. We cannot imagine our life without it because it is very important to communicate with your family and friends. At the same time, we can find the opinion that the usage of mobile phones can be harmful and dangerous.

I think that mobile phones are very useful in our everyday life. Firstly, it is very convenient, as people can call each other anywhere. Secondly, each telephone has such devices as a calendar, a camera, the Internet, an alarm clock and others. No matter where we are, there is an opportunity to get connected to the Internet, check our e-mails and find any necessary information. In addition mobile phones can help fill in our free time. For example, we may play games on it. Moreover, you are always available to delay meetings or let somebody know if you are late. Thirdly, many parents buy cell phones for their children just for safety. If a child gets into some trouble, he can call emergency services or his parents. If you need, you can call the police or an ambulance.

At the same time, some people believe that mobile phones are dangerous. Their microwaves can be very harmful and they affect our health greatly. In addition, there is such a phenomenon as a mobile phone addiction, and it’s a real problem in our society. Besides, when a person speaks on the phone in public places, we can listen to other people’s conversations or sometimes phones ring a lot of times. It is so disturbing.

In conclusion, I’d like to say that mobile phones make our life easier but nevertheless, there is a negative effect on our health. That is why people shouldn’t overuse them.

Lately computers have filled our life. We do not imagine our leisure without this miracle-machine.

They have much better memories and they can store much information. No man alive can do 500,000 sums in one second, but a computer can. In fact, computers can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can predict weather, and even play chess, write poetry or compose music. With the help of computers the Internet has entered into our life. It’s a brilliant source of information because the internet is a big encyclopedia. Now people cannot live a day without checking of mail and visiting their favourite sites. The Internet is not only the assistant in daily work, it is also the other world in which there are mail boxes, libraries, photo galleries, games, shops. The internet gives us a chance to communicate with people all over the world. It is interesting to learn about a life in different countries and you can practice English talking to native speakers. Also you can use the internet if you are looking for a job or to find people who share your interests. By means of the Internet people can travel to different cities, visit tourist places.

Certainly, the Internet can be the excellent assistant in information search. But we can’t rely on all the information. Moreover, some sites are unsuitable for children and should be controlled by parents. Besides, the internet can cause addiction. We lose a touch with the real world getting in a full dependence on a computer. But computers shouldn’t replace seeing your friends. And finally, users of the internet get a lot of spam every day which is very annoying.

I think that it is necessary to understand, what is really important on the Internet and what is not. And then the Internet will be not the terrible enemy, but the indispensable assistant.

It is common knowledge that television now plays an important role in our life. It is difficult to say if it is good or bad for us.

On the one hand, we can say that TV is our eyes because TV helps us to know more about the world, about the other counties, about the events that happened in the world.  It's the main source of information and a cheap form of entertainment for millions of people. It gives us an opportunity to "travel" all over the world, to "meet" different people and learn about their customs and traditions. It has the power to educate and broaden our minds. It helps us to relax after a hard day's work and escape from reality. There's always a great variety of programs on TV: news and sports programs, talk shows, games, concerts and theatre performances...

On the other hand, television is a terrible waste of time. It makes us lazier. We stay at home instead of going out. We read less. We think less. We even talk less. Before we admitted the one-eyed monster into our homes, we never found it difficult to occupy our spare time. For instance, we used to have hobbies, we used to go outside for our amusements to theatres, cinemas, restaurants and sporting events. We read books and listened to music. All that belongs to the past. Television encourages passive enjoyment. Little by little, it cuts us off from the real world.  Besides, very often the programmes are bad. There is also too much ads. Violence on TV is another problem that worries people. As George Mikes once said, TV teaches us "how to kill, to rob, to shoot and to poison." But the same can be said about computer games and many films and books.
