Ход урока

T: Good morning dear students. I’ m glad to see you again. Let me begin this project lesson and to declare its title: Teenagers’ fashion in the UK and Russia. Everybody knows our appearance is very important. But people in different countries prefer to wear different clothes. First, we are going to learn some facts about teenagers’ fashion in the UK. What can you say about fashion in the UK? Let’s listen to the first group.

  1. Pupils show their research work among classmates about their attitudes towards fashion.

Fashion

As the UK is very much a western society - we wear very much the same as any other modern western society - ranging from Jeans and T-shirts (whether with designer labels or not) to full business suits for office work (if required). Special clothes for the climate include heavy overcoats or anoraks for cold wintry weather to raincoats and umbrellas, for weather rain. Materials used cover every type and colour of fabric available, especially consider that Britain is a multi cultural society and in certain cities (Bradford for an example) you will find many stores with very colourful silk available for making in Sari's and other ethnic clothes.

Footwear

Footwear can be from the likes of Nike and Addidas Trainers (sneakers) to Leather Brogues (Wingtips) and for ladies - also the trainers to highly fashionable boots and shoes with heels or without.

Clothes worn by children

When they are relaxing at home or out playing with their friends, children in England wear comfortable clothes like t-shirts, jeans and sport wear. The right clothes are very important to teenagers, and many love to shop for the latest fashions.

Where do English teenagers shop?

In shops like TopShop, Oasis, Kookai, Warehouse, and Miss Sixty.

At School

Most children wear a school uniform when they are at school. In some schools children must wear jackets and ties. In other schools the uniform is more casual.

Famous British fashion designers

Famous British fashion designers include Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Paul Smith, and Stella McCartney, daughter of former Beatle Paul McCartney.

T: What English pupils think about fashion? This table will help you

  1. I know that boys wear comfortable clothes just to show their individuality and they are not really bothered about brands and logos.
  2. I want to add they prefer cheap clothes
  3. Speaking about the girls, we can say they keep up with the latest trends. They want to be fashionable and buy clothes from top designers.
  4. I don’t agree that every girl in England is crazy about fashion/ Some of them use their inspiration
  5. They buy clothes in supermarkets and in second – hands shops.

T: Well done. What about Russia? Now we’ll listen about teenagers’ opinions about fashion in Russia. Group 2 you are welcome.

  1. Pupils show their research work among classmates about their attitudes towards fashion.

We decided to start with definition of the term “ fashion”. What does it mean? Let’s listen. Fashion is something we deal with everyday. Even people who say they don't care what they wear choose clothes every morning that say a lot about them and how they feel that day.

One certain thing in the fashion world is change. We are constantly being bombarded with new fashion ideas from music, videos, books, and television. Movies also have a big impact on what people wear. Ray-Ban sold more sunglasses after the movie Men In Black. Sometimes a trend is world-wide. Back in the 1950s, teenagers everywhere dressed like Elvis Presley.

Who dictates fashion?

Musicians and other cultural icons have always influenced what we're wearing, but so have political figures and royalty. Newspapers and magazines report on what Hillary Clinton wears. The recent death of Diana, the Princess of Wales, was a severe blow to the high fashion world, where her clothes were daily news.

Even folks in the 1700s pored over fashion magazines to see the latest styles. Women and dressmakers outside the French court relied on sketches to see what was going on. The famous French King Louis XIV said that fashion is a mirror. Louis himself was renowned for his style, which tended towards extravagant laces and velvets.

There are many reasons we wear what we wear.

Protection from cold, rain and snow: mountain climbers wear high-tech outerwear to avoid frostbite and over-exposure. Physical attraction: many styles are worn to inspire "chemistry." Emotions: we dress "up" when we're happy and "down" when we're upset.

Religious expression: Orthodox Jewish men wear long black suits and Islamic women cover every part of their body except their eyes. Identification and tradition: judges wear robes, people in the military wear uniforms, brides wear long white dresses. Fashion is big business. More people are involved in the buying, selling and production of clothing than any other business in the world. Everyday, millions of workers design, sew, glue, dye, and transport clothing to stores. Ads on buses, billboards and magazines give us ideas about what to wear, consciously, or subconsciously. Clothing can be used as a political weapon. In nineteenth century England, laws prohibited people from wearing clothes produced in France. During twentieth century communist revolutions, uniforms were used to abolish class and race distinctions.

Then we decided to know what our classmates think about fashion. We asked them

What is your attitude towards fashion?

A) I don’t care about it
B) I prefer wearing clothes which are fashionable
C) I can wear cheap clothes and match them with expensive ones.

Now you can see the results. Only 35% of our boys think about fashion. They spend their money on trendy clothes. 50% choose clothes on practical reasons. They don’t like dressing just to impress. 15% use their imagination when they choose their style.

Girls keep up withal the latest trends. 70% buy clothes of top designers. They like go shopping and spending money on trendy clothes. 15% use their inspiration. They pick up bargains at the street markets to find cheap clothes and then match them with fashion ones.

T. You’ve listened about your classmates opinions. What can you say about yourselves? What are your views on clothes? Use the language in the box to show your point of view.

Вопросы для обсуждения:

  1. Do you choose clothes based on practical reasons?
  2. Do you like to look different?
  3. Do you spend a lot of money on trendy clothes?
  4. Do you like dressing to impress your classmates?

T. To sum it up, we can say that the person most of all accepts such clothes in which he feels himself freely. Young people are so creative nowadays, their styles are so varied. Look during the break at our pupils. How different they are. Some of them wear formal clothes and some… But let’s listen to the third group.

  1. The pupils show two different styles: formal and informal and explain what teenagers like wearing at school and during their free-time activities.

Nowadays it’s easy to be fashionable even at school. We have no standard uniforms. An equal uniform appeared in19th century in the epoch of monarchy when the system of lyceums and colleges for teaching children was created.
After the revolution and in the Soviets epoch girls wore brown dresses and white or black aprons. Boys wore dark blue suits. As in our country there were such youth organizations: pioneers, komsomol, each pioneer had red tie, each komsomol has the special emblem on its wrest. But now we live in the 21st century, our country has changed. Now all people and students wear different clothes. We want to show you some teenagers’ groups which try to show their individuality with the help of clothes.

Look. This person is Goth. They prefer wearing

  1. high boots
  2. black or vinyl trousers,
  3. vinyl raincoats, as in film Matrix;
  4. Girls can wear mini-skirts.

This is Emmo

Emo wear rose-black clothes. Sometimes on clothes, we can see funny drawings or split heart.

The most typical cloth

  1. Narrow, covering t-shirt.
  2. The Narrow jeans black or ashen-blue colour.
  3. Black or rose belt with rivet
  4. The Sneakers with bright or black lace, laced by special way.

Punks.

Some young punks love to shock other people. Many punks dye the hairs in bright unnatural colour.

They usually wear a chain and stickpins, badge and stripes with names of the groups or political slogan.

The Suitable town cloth:

  1. t-shirt (often black colour),
  2. jacket (usually ‘kosuha’’),
  3. jeans ,
  4. sneakers , heavy shoes.
  5. The Cloth is often torn.

Cloth is a way of showing your individuality. In our school children needn’t to wear school uniform. But we prefer wearing formal style, Look at this model. It’s the best example of our usual clothes. This black dress underline girl’s figure. Also you can see elegant blouse. Girls usually wear fashion shoes which are comfortable.

T. Thank you. Choosing your style of clothes, we should visit many shops. Shopping has become more exciting than it used to be. In addition, it’s proved that shopping or just window shopping helps to make your mood better, helps to avoid depression. It is good for our health sometimes forget about everything and go shopping. But where? And what shops? Let’s watch the program about shopping in Russia. After watching the film you are going to answer some questions.

  1. The pupils watch the program.

T. OK, and now please answer the following questions:

- What is the subject of this program? (January is the best time for shopping)

-What shops and shopping malls did the speaker talk about? (shopping malls are GUM, Tsum, shops are Paul Smith, Vtoroe dyhanie, Shop and Bar, H&M, a discount store)

- What is his favourite shop? What style of clothes are there? (Paul Smith/classical British style)

- What kind of shop is “Vtoroe dyhanie”? (It is second-hand)

-What kind of style did Dennis Simachev develop? (he developed his own style mixed Russian  traditions with contemporary culture)

- What advantages are there in discount shops? (There are a wide range of brands on sale there. And you can find various clothes there)

T. Having analyzed the information what can you say about teenagers’ fashion in the UK and Russia? Use the plan:

– Different views on clothes
– Different styles of clothing
– Different shops to visit

T. In conclusion, I want to read the words of English writer S. Maugham: “The well dressed man is he whose clothes you never notice.” What does it mean?

  1. The pupils answer the question.

T. Well, I hope you have learned something new today enjoyed the lesson. Unfortunately it was our last lesson. It was pleasant for me to work with you. And I will miss you very much. Good bye.
