Once upon a time there were two dukes in Britain, the Lancastrians and the Yorkists . The symbol of the first one was a red rose. Of the second one was a white rose. They were at war for the Crown of England. That’s why the war between them got the name of the War of the Roses. This war, which lasted for thirty years (1455-1485), was a dark time for England. The War of the Roses ended in 1485. King Richard III of the House of York was killed in the battle. Henry Tudor, a head of the House of Lancaster, was proclaimed King of England. The war was over at last, and everybody sighed with relief. The winner was the duke whose symbol was a red rose. So, he made this flower the symbol of the country. A RED ROSE

The thistle of Scotland is the oldest national symbol. There is a legend that explains why it became the Scottish emblem. It goes back many hundreds of years. According to that legend, ancient Scandinavians (the Norsemen) wanted to conquer the land of Scotland and settle there. Late in the summer of 1263 King Haakon of Norway and his army landed on the east coast of Scotland. The Scots gathered their army to defend the land. They stood behind the river Tay and made a camp to have a rest after a long march. The Scots were sleeping and did not expect the enemies. When the Norsemen decided to attack the Scots, they took their shoes off not to make noise. But one of the Norsemen stepped on a thistle. That sudden and sharp pain made him scream. So the Scots heard this "alarm" and put the Norsemen to fight. So the thistle was chosen as Scotland's national emblem. A THISTLE.

The shamrock is the symbol of Northern Ireland. It is connected to St. Patric , Patron Saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick is famous for bringing Christianity to Ireland. The legend tells he used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit all exist as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of wearing a shamrock on his feast day. The red hand is also a symbol of Nothern Ireland. The Red Hand is in its flag. According to the myth, there was time when the heir to the throne of Ireland was undecided. And they decided to hold a boat-race and the first who would reach the shore of Ulster would be the king. One of them so much desired the country, saw that he was loosing the race, cut his hand, threw it to the shore and won. The hand is most likely red because it was covered with blood.
